    Safety has nothing to do with lifting a vehicle backwards or not on a asymetric lift.
    The center of gravity is the only important thing to respect,and it must be at the same distance between the short and long arms,so offset relative to the columns towards the longest arms
    The center of gravity is different on front wheel drive,rear wheel drive,or even loaded or not vehicles,so "backwards" has no sense in itself.

      Perhaps but you’re causing excessive wear to the rear arms and carriage slide blocks. If you want to back into a A symmetrical hoist you need to switch the arms.

    Asymmetrical is for ease of entry/exit into the vehicle. Look at your google snap shot. It allows the posts to be further forward in relationship to the doors, letting the doors open much more freely. Typically the front of vehicles is heavier (front is closer to the posts), and the rear which has the arms extended more has less weight. Definitely makes sense to load them forward only. However, being that your total load is well under the capacity of the lift the now rear weight bias is still at an overall acceptable level. And 4 points is 4 points, rear facing doesn't make the car less stable that's not the issue really, its the heavier end being further from the posts then when forward facing.

    I work in a funky small shop. The owner installed 2 asymmetrical lifts in a way that we almost have to use them backwards. Honestly, i want to hate on it but it works perfectly fine. Some cases better. I dont know, dont do it, but if you have to, do it. It's been over a year since they were installed, thousands of cars up and down, no issues so far.

      The lift has no idea which way around the vehicle is, all it knows is that there is an imposed load and it has to lift it, so long as the mounts are positioned to allow for equal weight distribution then the lift is an inanimate object - unless it had some sort of load calibrator - then a load is a load and doing what you do to test is sensible and the provision of additional supports when really wanting to heave on the vehicle would make sense when working directly underneath.

    Hey! Hello Chris and Jen! I used to put vehicles on backwards on occasion. As you said , use your noodle when you do so and make sure that the front of the vehicle is back far enough and think about the weight distribution. And remember that it is always better to error on the side of caution!

    I have never even used a lift but my common sense is saying that you want the vehicles center of gravity as close to the posts as possible. This causes the smallest amount of stress on the posts and floor bolts.

    I always enjoy your videos Chris, keep them coming. I’ve used Rotary for years, nearly bulletproof. It’s not the lift arms or hydraulics that would concern me, it’s the attachment to the floor. If the center of gravity is too far out of the design window the chance that a weak anchor or crack in the concrete can cause a cascade failure increase well beyond my comfort zone.

  • @bradjd6957
    @bradjd6957 5 місяців тому +2

    I have been installing rotary hoists for 5 yrs. You have to switch the front arms with the rear arms. Because your overloading the rear arm and moving the center of gravity you could damage the rear arms, but unfortunately you don’t have enough space in front of the hoist to fit your truck that way. The lift capacity is regulated by a pressure valve in the pump. When rotory has there hoists certified by ALI it has to pass a structural test of 1.5 times its lifting capacity to be certified. There is a way to convert your A symmetrical hoist to symmetrical or standard setup. You need to use spacers (black pipe) for your cables, the overhead needs to be lengthened, buy new front arms because short ones won’t work.

  • @waitaminnitjack212
    @waitaminnitjack212 5 місяців тому +3

    Seems like that google post is confusing LENGTH with WEIGHT. The WEIGHT needs to be on the SHORT arms of the lift so most weight will be closest to the posts. The danger is that the post anchors can fail and let the whole shebang tip over- and that anchor failure will NOT show any symptoms until it lets go completely! The arms are not your weak link, it's the anchors. The sway you see at the top of the columns is a sign of the stress on the anchors....That said, the engineered safety factor is probably well past the load you have given the lift- company lawyers are allergic to lawsuits! Bottom line: you probably are not exceeding safe limits, but it's definitely something to be verrrry careful about...

    I have two Bend Pacs in my shop. I have tied them to the building on the tops of the lifts. Think how much leverage there is on those anchors when your rockin that vehicle. Capturing them at the top limits greatly how much they want to pull on the anchors. I recently moved one of the racks and this time I used Hilti epoxy instead of anchors. Technician Red has a great vid about epoxy anchors. Mine r both asymmetrical. I often put small cars on backwards. Never big stuff!!!!

In the cartoon picture, one of the wings had knocked off the bridge mast of the ship, the front of the ship was sunk down to the water line barely afloat. And the caption read, from the pilot. " I told you I could do it". The moral is. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. 😎

  • @thecheez3418
    @thecheez3418 5 місяців тому +2

    The answer is that it depends. If your asymmetrical lift has a tilting carriage, then putting a vehicle on backwards carries a risk of it sliding off. Your lift appears not to tilt, so as long as the weight distribution is good, you should be fine.

  • @fixinman1156
    @fixinman1156 5 місяців тому +3

    My thoughts are with an asymmetrical lift with the long arms in the back, and the heaviest portion of the vehicle farthest away from the mounting points of the lift to the concrete. Is it a worry that with the vehicle, all the way up in the air angle of force would it try to pull the lift out of the cement with hthe majority of the weight being farthest away from the centerline a lift. Regardless of center of gravity . Center of gravity on that truck is behind where it is on the lift. We use both types at work . I regularly use a 12k and 18k symmetrical working on superdutys and vans . Only use asymmetric for lighter weight vehicles .I wouldn’t be worried about the lift as much as i would be about pulling the lift out of the concrete with that much weight past the center of gravity. I feel like there is a reason they dont make large weight rating lifts in an asymmetric design regardless of how you position the vehicle on the hoist. Really it should come down to center of gravity line. If you put it on backwards make sure its center of gravity is where your lifts is weather its 6” or 18” behind lift posts. Not easy to do when front arms are short trying to reach a frame or leaf spring on a truck 🤷🏼‍♂️

    I remember way back when watching a safety video that showed you could safely lift a 10klbs van but then put a 8klbs Cadillac convertable on the same lift and have a failure , simply because of the extra height clearance and rigidity difference of the vehicles … leverage and applied physics plus engineered margins of safety make it more about service life and less about the idiot in charge these days😊

      @@delgrangos1859 Not all together true. Most are not designed to be mobile. The Wildfire happens to be mobile, but even they will tell you that you should move them as little as possible. The drawback to the wildfire is that there are reinforcement straps across the floor, which are constantly tripped on and collect filth and small parts. Proper 4 post lifts are point mounted for an open, trip hazard free work area beneath, as well as higher capacities for larger vehicles. The wildfire lifts are considered by most to be a light duty hybrid lift for the guy who wants to work on his car in the air, and also needs to stack cars for storage. This is from the salesman I spoke to about additional lifts in our shop, and he happily (because he had integrity) talked me out of them. Good company for sure, wrong application for commercial use.

    If there is a front/back, then can't you just unbolt it from the footing and rotate one side to the other then bolt it back down?

    The front asymmetrical arms are not made to hold the weight. Many cases where they bend or break.

      They are shorter and the exact same construction as the rear arms. Which means they can take more weight before they bend or break.

    26 years as a technician and it totally depends on the car and if it's heavier on one end or the other. If you shake it and it doesn't fall your good 👌

    Why do they design these 70-30? The balance line for weight distribution can be found for most cars. Make the lift 50-50 and set the cars balance line between the posts.

    glad to see you have a fire extinguisher handy. never can have enough of those. but i use that type as a last resort. always keep a water hose handy when ever doing hot work. its an unlimited supply. the powder is a major pain in the ass. you never get it all out or off of what you spray it on. just sharing my experience on putting out fires in automotive and industrial settings. like for example a steel mill ISG Conshohocken mittal steel now. they used extinguishers as a last resort. but we also used water. even those there was greases and oil every where. the extinguishers will put the flames out. but it wont put out whats smoldering. and it will smoke and relight again and again. even as a fire watch i noticed working at many sites. DuPont's as another chambers works. we would demo steel structures systems. and always hosing anything that was cherry and smoldering. and using extinguishers ... well you'd be better off pissing on it. it will reignite if you dont use water. just a little useless info. but wanted to share......AS FAR AS THE LIFT. IT DOESNT MATTER WTF PEOPLE OR MANUFACTIRER SAY. common sense put it on the lift and do the shake test every time. never had a car fall off ever. but i always did the shake test.
