    I love both you and Black Scout Survival. Both of you always give great tips!!! Thanks for the video!!!! I am getting MUCH better at hand drilling a coal. It took me forever to learn, but because of a video like this, I realized I was using the wrong kind of wood and the wrong kind of tinder to get my fires going. Once I changed, my success rate dramatically improved.

    I love the way you started the fire using the hand drill technique and to be sure I have it correct I downloaded this video to train with later. I want to thank you so much for showing us how to start a fire this way. I was in the Air Force and the instructor where I was trained showed us how to start fires, but didn't use this technique, but did show us the bow drill and I watched a Marine Corps video where their instructors used the same one I was trained on and now that I know this one I am ready to survive in the forest since that is what we have here in Arkansas. Thanks so much for sharing this information and I hope you have a Blessed new week.

It's good to see you working with other UA-camrs. this has to be one of the better bow drill videos I've seen on UA-cam. it really shows the finer details in Bow drill fire making. thanks for the video best wishes to you and keep making good videos.

    You mentioning the RPMs of small vs large sticks reminded me of something. If you are making a bow drill (I know, not the subject of this video) you can take a larger stick and use your knife to put a shallow notch/depression about 1.5 inches wide around the circumference of the stick where your cordage goes. This accomplishes two things: first, it helps keep your bow string from sliding up and down the drill and, second, it increases your RPMs by making the section your bow turns smaller while retaining the greater surface area of the large drill. More surface are equals more friction and that combined with greater speed gives you faster fires with less effort. You can do the same thing with the hand drill by carving away the wood from about 2 inches above the contact point of the drill and the base so that the part your hands come in contact with is narrower.

    I really enjoy you two collaborating on a video. Just to add my two cents. I would say conditioning your hands to the friction from the spindle is a good place to start. The more you condition your hands, the less chance you will stop drilling because of the pain. Yes, I said pain. When starting hand drilling you will develop blisters pretty quickly. I recommend starting slow, like 5 minutes the first day. Then take a day off. Then do 10 minutes. And increase your time from there. That way your hands will get accustomed to the process of drilling. This bushcraft skill takes time and patience.

    My brother, if you take a 6 to 8 inch piece of paracord or a little longer, with a loop in both ends, and drape it over the top end of your spindle, then you can put each thumb in the loops, will not let your hands slide or work down your stick. Works wonderful, but have to confess, I saw it demonstrated online and it is not my idea. Makes the job ten times more efficient and not so bad on your hands.

    I realized my mistake as soon as I read my message...bowdrill & handdrill r basically the same technique only the assistance of the bow & mandrel(skateboard wheel). Lilly should make a handdrill video because she can do it. Even though she's said she doesn't like that method. Rock the videos with Dax! She's so skilled...Mike may b her teacher & he's excellent b the survival skills.

    Multitul in the forest - not on Feng Shui))) Good video. But I think, bow drill, a more important skill. Because there is always a piece of rope, parachute cord or string from the boot. Hand Drill is the Stone Age, the Bow Drill - for the elite)))

    Can we stop pretending that fire drills or bow drills are anything to do with survival ordeals. You said yourself they are complex. You also need a knife. If you went to the bother of bringing and carrying a knife why not bring a lighter. You can carry a lighter on a plane and in public. In a survival ordeal you also don't want to be wearing camouflage. You want to be found. If you are a survival channel start being realistic. Fire by friction is a fun hobby - nothing more.

    • @pimdankers6226
      @pimdankers6226 8 років тому

      +andyisyoda what if the lighter broke ?

    • @dajoker51
      @dajoker51 8 років тому

      Friction fire techniques are additional survival tools. We can allow that they are a last resort. If you have better means of making a fire then of course you use those. But in order to develop the skill of friction fire you have to practice it when you don't need it, when you aren't reliant on it. Hopefully if you ever are in a survival situation you have a fire steel and a knife and other items to help you. But it's useful to know how to do more with less.

    • @andyisyoda
      @andyisyoda 8 років тому

      +dajoker51 you haven't thought this through. You used a knife to make the drill. If you are bringing a knife then why not just bring a fire steel. I am a survival instructor. Our courses feature realistic skills for real ordeals. Fire by friction is a nice hobby - nothing more.

    • @andyisyoda
      @andyisyoda 8 років тому

      +Pim Dankers you used a knife to make the drill. What if that broke? If you are bringing a knife why not bring a flint n steel or lighter. And, I've never had a lighter break. Even empty they still spark. Lilly needs to decide on what her channel is - realistic survival advice or messing about with bushcraft hippy crap.
