There's an old episode of Frasier where he is mistakenly thought to have died and his obituary is prematurely published. It includes the memorable description of him as "lovably pompous." I am often reminded of this when watching Steve's videos. I say this affectionately. 😊
I get your disdain for philosophy, though I don’t share it. What I don’t get is your taste for theology which I see as philosophy of the supernatural. There is no supernatural. What gives?
@@thomashefferon9711 But that’s just it: the best of theology can read like an infinite appendix to The Lord of the Rings, with generations of scholars (some of them quite eloquent) writing their hearts out about these nonexistent but fantastic things. In philosophy, a) it’s always the dullest writers writing b) endlessly boring elaborations of c) decidedly non-fantastic things.
For a man as well read and as erudite as yourself your dismissal of philosophy as a discipline is fascinating more than anything else. You say “philosophy is not physics” ignoring that physics is a science and science is itself founded upon philosophy and epistemology, and you say “philosophy is not mathematics” when in reality mathematics is nothing other than applied logic, in the truest sense. Your failure to recognize that all these academic disciplines you hold in high regard are themselves supported by philosophical axioms is puzzling to me. You also on this channel in the past have made remarks about right and wrong, so what do you think philosophers of morality/ethics are doing? Much ado about nothing? You can’t yourself make normative claims about the world and simultaneously reject the importance of moral philosophy, what else can your normative claims stand on?
Steve doesn’t need me to defend him, but his refusal to engage philosophy is perfectly reasonable. He simply wants to read about and think about other things. The idea that the other disciplines stand on philosophy is wrong. There are no foundations. Disciplines evolve out of the need for them in building better lives for ourselves. Most people don’t see that the endless arguments of philosophy add much to how they get along. Even people as broadly and deeply read as Steve.
@ wanting to read about other things is fine, someone can do that without ridiculing one of the oldest academic fields in existence. And you are wrong about other fields not being contingent on philosophy. Within theory there necessarily must be a philosophical base to whatever it is you are studying whether you recognize it or not. Science itself is founded on empiricism, which is a philosophical concept, there is no circumstance in which science is being conducted that doesn’t pertain to a philosophical foundation. The idea that the rules of math should be consistent across time is philosophical, the idea that there is an objective reality outside your consciousness is philosophical, the idea that anything in reality logically correlates to one another is philosophical. These things are all philosophy whether you admit it or not, and scientific and mathematical theories are necessarily assuming these things. Just because other scholars refuse to engage with philosophy doesn’t mean they aren’t operating on top of philosophical assumptions.
Ohh is this your first video on Jared? I have been enjoying his videos recently… 😊 I am glad you have enjoyed some of his content. I didn’t know he had a second channel, thank you for recommending it.
Kind of sad for you, maybe. I've read more philosophy than you have, in more languages. I've read more studies of philosophy and histories of philosophies than you have. I've talked about philosophy with more philosophers than you have. It's objectively impossible to claim I'm ignorant of philosophy. But you're not talking about ignorance here. You're talking about agreement. And you're saying the fact that I don't agree with you about this subject makes you claim you now question literally everything I've said about literally everything, from Homer to Vatican II. That's not only an idiotic stance but also a deeply, intolerantly religious one.
your ideas about philosophy are so weirdly naive. philosophy has a direct handle on our political, material reality. without philosophy, women wouldn't have the right to vote.
@@saintdonoghue what do you think politics is based on? do you think it just developed out of thin air? what is any country's constitution based on? you can disagree with philosophy or think that a lot of handwaving and nonsense is done WITHIN philosophy, but to dismiss the entirely of a branch of thought is hilariously stupid.

You're obviously new here. Steve and Jared are friends and Jared has been on the channel several times. (By the time you posted, Jared himself had posted his approval). There is no actual ad hominim attacking here - Steve just doesn't like philosophy.
My only criticism of this video, and of your general assessment of my video, is that I was hoping it would be much meaner!
We've always got Voxer!
Very cool to see this interaction! I am a fan of both, if that is allowed. Much respect.
Phew! I dodged a bullet here…
4 videos today! We are in for a treat.
Finally, an hour+ block of Steve! As a sidenote, the justifications on your Worst Nonfiction list gave me a much needed chuckle.

"B.s on bs": this cracked me up.
Being Orthodox myself, I did not expect to learn about Penguin Classics publishing the Philokalia from Steve's channel!
I couldn’t tell if this whole video was sarcasm or if you actually don’t recognize the importance of philosophy
I'm not sure if the background sound of the whole video was just rain or someone furiously typing on their keyboard.

What do you mean Private Government is junk, it was in one of your 100 nonfiction recs videos! Yes I re-watch them periodically..
It's a very engaging book! But its various theoretical contentions ... hoo boy ...
Hah, sounds like I was a bit too hasty to remove it from my TBR!

They have had a number of Zoom chats on this channel! Well worth checking out, their dynamic is fun.
Gaseous Nonsense!
Jared or me? Or both?
Allright! 4 videos today ❤
A BS in BS 😂
He seems like a more moderate and likeable dudebro. Therefore is he really a dudebro? 🤭 He has the beard I suppose.
Is Jared going to read any romance books ? I didn’t hear any mention of romance ??
