I know this video is about the book reviews and I really enjoyed it. A few landed on my ever expanding TBR list. BUT…. The MVP of this video is Teddy! The snoring just tickles me. So happy, loved and comfortable. ❤❤❤❤.
Of the books mentioned I’ve read and loved 4. Wild Houses ( audio for Mayo accent) Intermezzo ( her best book so far) My Friends ( great exploration of friendship, isolation and being a political refugee) Our Evenings ( his best book yet )
Dinaw Mengestu has been a writer for more than a decade. Someone Like Us is his fourth book. If you want to get to feel and know this writer, his first book, The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears maybe a good choice to read first.
James is my #1 book this year (heard about it on your channel… so thank you!), and now I’m on the hunt for the rest of Percival Everett’s books! Currently reading Trees and loving it!
I'll be checking out the other lists. I love genre reading. I have to be in the mood for it, but I love a good epic fantasy or space opera. Thanks for doing these videos.
Fascinating list! Perhaps the most interesting end-of-year list I've heard seen this year. Added several to my wish list. Had forgotten all about the Kelly Link and Clyo Mendoza books.
Don't sleep on 'Sister Deborah'. I read it last month and enjoyed it quite a bit. I really liked the layered structure of the narrative. It's a weird little book, but a good weird.
I’ve read All Fours (and quite enjoyed it, I see it being a big book for women with MFAs teaching creative writing, well I guess I’m thinking of an old advisor of mine) & Intermezzo (my least favorite Sally Rooney so far as a Rooney lover). I’m very interested in reading The Coin soon. Surprised to not see Martyr! here??? I just read it this past week and absolutely ADORED it.
Love all the book lists. So many new to me books here. James and My Friends are still high on my list but there might be a few others that I might pick up too. 😊💙
I have Pink Slime and it sounds interesting but can’t quite read it yet cause the pandemic is still such a trigger for me. The books that have peaked my interest are “The Anthropologists” and The Coin 😊
I hadn’t heard of Fury: A Novel but after a little research I think it sounds interesting and the library has a copy available so I will be giving it a try. I’ll let you know how it goes.
As someone who listens to Pod Save America (a podcast hosted by ex Obama staffers) and loved Dan Pfeiffer Yes We (Still) Can, and plans on reading The World as It Is by Ben Rhodes Great Expectations by Vinson Cunningham sounds like a book I need to read and I'm hoping to get to it next year.
You know about Jon Favraeu starting a PAC to reduce the popularity of Medicare For All when it was being promoted by Bernie etc in the 2020 Dem primary? Pod Save are not going to save us, they are tools of the feckless democrats who never do anything for us. Just letting you know.
Were you thinking of The Gatekeepers: How the White House Chiefs of Staff Define Every Presidency? I am interested in reading When The Clock Broke. I found myself looking around my room for a sleeping dog and then it donned on my it was Teddy sleeping/snoring. I thought I lost it for a minute. Ooh, Lazarus Man sounds exciting.
The Coin was offered to me on email by the publicist I assume via Netgalley. I read the blurb and was curious about the Palestinian in NYC and the premise of her getting her students involved in selling fake handbags. It did NOT deliver . The central character is really disalikeable and not even in a good way and was very odd and I really couldnt see what the author was wanting to get across with it. I'd say one to miss.
I am absolutely no help with the scary Hungarian name, but the German name in the title is pronounced more like "Hairsht" - I'm reading it right now. FYI - 400+ page single sentence, no breaks! 😱 My Friends was great, and I do recommend the audio read by the author. Ditto for Small Rain.
I was excited to read All Fours. I picked it up the other day, and hated it. I do not understand the hype. The tone was unbearably privileged, insufferable, and quirky (pejorative). It felt like July was attempting to be “shocking” sexually just for the sake of it, which fell so flat. The themes were incredibly promising, but the execution was not my cup of tea at all.
Interesting choices, this is making me so excited! Adding to my endless TBR. I wish publishing (or time) would slow down! I wouldn’t reconsider The Book of Love, by the way. 😉 I DNF’d early on, it’s well written but felt almost YA to me, and not in a good way, a lot of silly teen talk, and it became boring, much too long. On the other hand I’d highly recommend Herscht 07769. So thrilled it made the list so other readers will discover it. Glad they chose Praiseworthy too, although it’s a very challenging read it was beautiful, hypnotic, and taught me so much. I finished Rejection last week, it was well written and so clever, lots to think about and I laughed out loud multiple times. And I also highly recommend Our Evenings. Not much plot but entrancing anyway, with the most beautiful prose. It looks like PW aligns closely with my reading taste, which makes me so excited to read the books here I hadn’t heard of. Thanks, Greg!

Teddy’s snoring should be an ASMR video. It’s very soothing ❤
😄
😂 🐶 💤
Sister Outsider or Zami by Audre Lorde are good. Fun fact: Lorde was a Librarian in New York in the 60’s.
Of the books mentioned I’ve read and loved 4.
Wild Houses ( audio for Mayo accent)
Intermezzo ( her best book so far)
My Friends ( great exploration of friendship, isolation and being a political refugee)
Our Evenings ( his best book yet )
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Oh! You will find Audre Lorde very rewarding. Sister Outsider is one of my top 5 books.
Thanks for the recommendation. I can't wait to read her work someday.

That's good to know--thanks.
I just started The Anthropologists and am enjoying it so far
That's good to hear! My library has a copy so hopefully it will come soon.
James is my #1 book this year (heard about it on your channel… so thank you!), and now I’m on the hunt for the rest of Percival Everett’s books! Currently reading Trees and loving it!
I'm so happy to have helped to introduce you to your favorite book of the year.
I'll be checking out the other lists. I love genre reading. I have to be in the mood for it, but I love a good epic fantasy or space opera.
Thanks for doing these videos.
I'm glad the videos help! And I'm glad that there are genre lists now, but I still wish they had more of a chance on the overall top ten.
Fascinating list! Perhaps the most interesting end-of-year list I've heard seen this year. Added several to my wish list. Had forgotten all about the Kelly Link and Clyo Mendoza books.
It really is an interesting list.
I just made THAT face again when you said All Fours by Miranda July. You know, ☹️ that face.
Don't sleep on 'Sister Deborah'. I read it last month and enjoyed it quite a bit. I really liked the layered structure of the narrative. It's a weird little book, but a good weird.

RE: Otis Spunkmeyer--I didn't last long. Narrative style made me crazy! The Anthropologist sounds really cool--gonna try that!
I absolutely LOVE Maus and Fun Home. I really liked Palestine by Joe Sacco too. I should foray into graphic novels more.
Love all the book lists. So many new to me books here. James and My Friends are still high on my list but there might be a few others that I might pick up too. 😊💙
It was definitely nice to see a good mix of familiar titles and discoveries.
I have Pink Slime and it sounds interesting but can’t quite read it yet cause the pandemic is still such a trigger for me.

I am so with you about pandemic books.

Please do!
I have Old King from the library to read. But I haven't started yet - due 12.21

I hope you enjoy any of the books you pick up!

That's the book! I read it when it first came out. I always forget the PSA about the Teddy snores until he snores loud enough to remind me. 😂
I thought there was a monster in the room getting ready to come after you.

if you want yo try nonfiction, I enjoyed knife and sciopath. I loved patriot by navalny.

Thanks for the feedback on it.

with james, I do not usually enjoy heavy dialect writing. that's why I skipped it
I really disliked Traveling. It was as much about Ann Powers as it was about Joni Mitchell which was not at all what I was looking for.
I was excited to read All Fours. I picked it up the other day, and hated it. I do not understand the hype. The tone was unbearably privileged, insufferable, and quirky (pejorative). It felt like July was attempting to be “shocking” sexually just for the sake of it, which fell so flat.

That's a lot of what I'm hearing about All Fours. It definitely makes me feel better about passing.
All Fours - no no from me. It was almost offensive in its stereotyping.
Interesting choices, this is making me so excited! Adding to my endless TBR. I wish publishing (or time) would slow down!
