    The inner shaft is flopping because that smooth 1/2 inch, round section out at the end of it is supposed to ride inside a pilot bearing on the back of the engine-- so that would have it supported on both ends. I think once you get everything tied together, the lovejoy will help to stabilize the shaft---- but if that lovejoy's rubber damper ever gets beat up and loose fitting-- it could allow that inner shaft to flop around a little too much and might bust the case, or at least blow apart that inner bearing.. So you'll just have to keep an eye on the lovejoy as time goes on, and replace the damper if it starts to get sloppy.

    WIth access to the Maker Space, I would have thought you would have made the spacer that goes between the two parts that would take advantage of the rivet holes. I was thinking how cool it would have been to make a ring that had the two different hole patterns so it could be bolted together. I didn't think you had access to a lathe, so figured that's why you're welding it. It would have been a bit more work, but it would have been cool.

      Those hole patterns exactly DID not line up with each other, but would have also interfered with each other if I tried putting in bolts from both sides. Drilling and tapping all those holes exactly right would have been tricky and a lot of work.
      Would have been cool if it worked out, but nope, exactly wrong.

    Ben, I have been watching your tractor conversion videos and was wondering how you decided on the side of DC motor to use with this tractor. It appears that DC motor hp is not the same as ice hp, so I was wondering how you decided? I've got a Ferguson TO-35 tractor that I might convert to ev someday so your project is very interesting to me. The TO-35 has a hp rating around 33, so would a 20 hp dc motor be adequate?

    Could you please help us understand the function of the coupler assembly? Is it meant to distribute the motor power to various functions or transmission?

      In the tractor transmission, it is a DOUBLE input shaft. An automobile has a simple single shaft, which goes through the gears and powers the wheels.
      In this tractor, there is that AND there is the rotating collar around the input shaft. That rotating collar powers the tractor's Power Take Off (PTO) which is a spinning driveshaft on the rear of the tractor to power accessories.
      The PTO can be independently engaged and disengaged with a hand-lever to the right of the operator's seated position.
      The coupler connects from the electric motor to BOTH parts of this 2-in-1 transmission input shaft, so that the motor can spin the wheels AND power the PTO.

    I am curious as to why you left the throw out bearing in place.

      No need to remove it. It doesn't get in the way.
      This is all still really an experiment. I'm likely to use a different motor with the flywheel. We'll see, but if I do, the bearing is already there.
