  • Soothe - We have tried many different eyelid wipes for our Dry Eye Disease patients. None of the wipes worked to the patients satisfaction. Either it was drying to the skin which promotes demodex growth, irritated the skin, didn't adequately clean the lid margin, or they just made the dry eye worse. Many patients wanted an eyelid wipe that not only made their dry eye better they also wanted it to be a make up remover as well. We developed an eyelid wipe that decreased blepharitis by decreasing bacteria and demodex on the lid margin, moisturized the skin so you would not have dead skin cells that demodex could feed off of, promoted rejuvenation of the skin, and worked as the best makeup remover. Soothe, formerly hyalureyes, is a medical grade eyelid wipe that does all these things without irritating the skin.
New Safe, Moisturizing Eye Makeup Remover
You might have recently seen my article in Bustle about the best eye makeup removers, but until now, I really couldn’t recommend any of them wholeheartedly. All of the eye makeup removers seemed to all fall into one of two categories - neither of which are good for my dry eye patients:
    1. 1st category: Detergent based (these have sodium laureth sulfate as one of the ingredients or the chemical name for soap “micelles.” Don’t be misled by Jennifer Garner’s explanations - micelles are expensive forms of soap, but soap nonetheless and soap is ALWAYS irritating to the delicate eye tissues and disruptive to the ocular surface. This produces and worsens existing dryness and irritation.
    2. Oil based makeup removers. The Koreans are responsible for making oil ok for us to use on our skin and faces again. Using the chemical principal that like attracts like -- the right kind of oils mixes with makeup products to easily remove makeup without stripping skin of its natural oils like detergents do. The problem is none of these oils are FDA approved for eyes. When it comes to oil-based removers, I hear patients using everything from petrolatum based Vaseline to castor oil, coconut oil and Vitamin E- none of which are proven safe or made for the delicate eye area. Beyond that, many of them (see current vaping crisis) also contain unwanted or unnamed ingredients that can harm the eye or cause infections. I once had a patient suffer a lid infection when she tried to substitute over the counter topical Vitamin E for postoperative antibiotics after a blepharoplasty.
