Awesome macro, portrait, and even an amazing walk-around lens if you're comfortable with the focal length. Definitely a homerun lens. I use it on my Z9 for portraits and my Z50 for macro.

So many great shots there-great video! I own that lens for few months. This is a must for Z, especially when you do product photography. Its rendering and colour is phenomenal. Simply, this is the best macro lens on the market-no other brand is even close.

The 105mm Z Micro isn't the fastest Autofocus.
I love the long accurate throw of the manual focus.
And its one of the very best macro lenses i've ever used - Love It....🦘

I have this lens for my z6 II. So far I really like it. Macro photography opens up a whole new world of possibilities. If it's raining outside you can still take picture indoors. The first helicopter is a cobra gun ship like the one used in Vietnam. The other is the old Huey UH-1 which also was used during Vietnam. The Marines use both of those.

I'm so excited to watch this review! I've had mine for a while but because I live up in Seattle and we had a really smokey end to our summer which took us to extreme temperatures well into fall it's pretty much jumped straight into winter and I don't have good light for macro work right now. Hoping to do some shots of mushrooms as they pop up but it's been so cold it's a bad year for them

Just out of curiosity have you tried the 85 1.8? I was using that for a shoot recently but was tempted to use the 105

    • @jtes1442
      @jtes1442 Рік тому

@@RabidNemo I have the Viltrox 85 1.8, but I've used the Nikon Z 85 1.8, which is better. However, I use the 85 range sparingly, so I can't justify the cost over the Viltrox. I prefer the 105 range, so I have no issue shelling out the money.

Great video with very nicely selected music that fits the mood of the macro imagery. Pre-ordered this lens when it was formally announced. It's a great lens. It does portraits really very well, too.
What people forget, reading about the closest focusing distance, is that this is from the sensor plane (indicated on top of the camera by a small circle with a line through it. That line is the sensor plane). So the flange distance and length of the lens are all in that 29cm (about 11.4 inch) focusing distance too.
I fabricated an additional extension tube for the Nikon ES-2 "film digitizing adapter". I bought an ES-2 naively assuming it would fit this lens, and it does in filter size, but the provided tubes and extension are not long enough for the 105 - the ES-2 apparently was designed for the MC 50.
It works superbly fine. The ES-2 is a bit of a pin in the anatomy, because of its film strip holder. But once you get the hang of it, it's sort of OK.
The results - great. When you reproduce (color) negatives, then there are a few tricks you can pull off in Lightroom or Photoshop, but I bought Negative Lab Pro to make this easier (less of a hassle, less handwork, time). The D850 actually had negative conversion "logic" on board. Not my Z 7ii.
As, Vahagn, you illustrate the lens's ability to give sun-stars, it is good to see that the sun-star flares are not accompanied by glare across the image. It remains tack sharp and contrasty. And that is an awesome optical result.
The "by wire" focusing is not in my way. I shot real medium format for years, some 40 years ago, and large format. It's all fine.
I would want Nikon to reconsider the focusing range switch on this lens, though, in the camera firmware, I guess, as I assume that the effect of the switch is realized by the camera. I would like one position as-is: full range, but the other I would want to be able to define in a menu in the camera. I often end up in use cases where the limited range is not what I need and being able to limit AF from searching for a subject where there's nothing is a waste of time.

I also have the 105mm Z lens and love it. As you mentioned, it opens up a whole other world. I would not call the autofocus fast, but it is accurate.

Thank you so much for posting this review - very professionally done! I just got this lens in the mail yesterday to replace my beloved F mount 105mm, which I used with the adapter on the Z6. For years I might add - uggh! I immediately noticed the difference in weight. Found this video to learn about the display on the lens etc. I'm so excited to shoot with it after watching this, especially seeing the quick auto focus examples! Looks like it'll definitely be an upgrade from the F mount.

Nice lens indeed! I've always found my macro lens gets a lot of use and glad I acquired it. Just as you mentioned for it's comes in very handy for weddings from macro shots to portraits.
I have the F mount Tamron 90mm 1:1 and just as this 105mm one has to know this lens personally for depth of field to capture what one wants. My best flower photos stems from macro even the flowers shots on the reception tables for instance. When anyone sees me in the backyard it's either 500mm for the birds and 90mm macro for the flowers though I do compare the 500mm flower shots to the 90mm macro and the 500mm will surprise you. Basically my two favorite lenses.
I should add I rarely use a tripod so my trick is hold down on the back button focus to account for my subtle movements back n forth and fire off two shots. One of them will be on the money.

The helicopters are the Bell UH-1Y Venom and AH-1Z Viper. I miss the old 2-blade configurations (the Huey and the Cobra); they used to thump their way into town. Such a distinguishing sound... much like we attribute character to lenses... you knew when you were listening to a Huey fly overhead. 🗽

    Why did I miss this?
As for the 105, I am kinda split. On the one hand it renders really nice and it is sharp. So technically a good lens. But for me it is not a love affair as was with my Sigma 150mm. Not by a long shot. Maybe it is the focal length, maybe something else. Please Nikon give me a longer Macro... 105mm is just not gonna cut it for me.
Anyways... nice one Vahagn! Rock on!

Hello Vahagraphy, I have had this 105mm Z MC lens for six month+, I also have the F mount version. From when you first mount the 105mm MC you just know how good its going to be. I find it just so well balanced on both my Z7ii and Z9, its light for it size, well made, Auto focuses very quickly and when in manual focus just works so sweetly. I just love this lens and I am just looking forward to getting my hands on a 85mm F1.* it will be worth the wait. I know every on is screaming for the Z8, D500 replacement, new wide angle Z mount lens...ect. But these thing take time not just to develop and but in manufacturing lines and if at any stage they find an issue, then Its better to take time to get thing right. Keep well, keep safe and enjoy life. This is a product image of my Z9 taken with my Z7ii and the 195mm mc? www.flickr.com/photos/johnhjic/51953142949/in/photostream
