Nice little video John. I visited Montalcino in the glorious summer of 2017 and paid a visit to Biondi Santi. I just adore driving around that part of Tuscany. Interestingly, anybody thinking of paying a visit to the region for cheaper purchases will be in for a rude awakening. They are well aware that wealthy tourists visit them and charge international prices but people pay. Your best bet for a bargain (and this is how I do it in the Ribera del Duero region in Spain) is to go to a small, independent, general shop in the region that sells a selection of food and, if you're lucky some local wine. It's often on a shelf behind the counter and if you ask if you can look at the stuff at the back, covered in dust, you sometimes find older vintages with the original price. It can be risky because you don't know how the wine has been kept but it's always worked for me. I have to be honest that this is fairly unlikely anywhere in Tuscany because everybody knows about the wine, the value and the willing tourists. That's not the case in Castile though. There's gold in them mountains.
I'll finish by saying how much I love Italy. I have a long relationship with the country and it was the first foreign country I visited when I was 10 years old. In recent years my base has been north east Umbria close to the Tuscan border. Spain has overtaken, somewhat, because I married a Spaniard. It's far easier in Spain to find a bargain and it's better value too. Montalcino is what it is though. I have some quality vintage and used to think that it had to be aged forever (some does) but it is possible to buy good stuff for £25 a bottle from a quality retailer and enjoy it as is or with a couple of years ageing.
    Good Health John,
    WT

Thanks very much for weighing in! Appreciate your thoughts. Definitely agree that there are not any screaming bargains in Montalcino in terms of discounted prices. Cheers!

Good info, John. You might have inspired me to open the second (of six) of the 2015s, the first of which I shared with friends last September. One comment that evening was, 'This wine will stay long in the memory.'

I have always preferred Brunello to Chianti, even when I was young and wine illiterate 😊

This is the best primer on Brunello di Montalcino DOCG for just a little over 3 minutes and 30 seconds. Packed with excellent information and insights from one of the most reliable wine experts and wine educators in America. Since this wine is one of my top favorites and I have already stayed twice in Montalcino, I’m very selective when it comes to my source of content about BdM. In this regard, I can say with certainty that this BdM overview is a great resource with plenty of learnings to offer. It’s a superb video! Very helpful, useful, relevant, intelligent, well-presented, and up-to-date. A must-watch for all BdM fans and wine enthusiasts! Congratulations on this and cheers to you, John!
