    Built one of these about 6 years ago. Used 4mm ply, then fibre-glass/expoy in and out. Light weight, very strong, and a delight to tour in. Very stable and fast, even fully loaded with camping gear. Had a LOT of use out of it, with only minimal upkeep needed. Sold it recently, and it still looked almost as good as the day it first went into the water. Selway Fisher has a winner !

    Beautiful job... I built a tunnel hull hydroplane when I was younger and have the itch to built something else... Well done.

    Thanks for taking the time to put this vid together. I'm building the 15' 8" S F Prospector and this is really helpful.
    All the best.

      +Graham Smith Glad to be of help. I quite like the Prospector but went for the Wren as it looked a simpler/quicker build. This is a factor when you have three children !

      I have two kids, so slightly (ha) more time ! ....Must admit I intend an easier option when I get around to the second canoe.

    I normally twist a pair of enamelled copper wire which is used for winding so that I have e twisted pair and tie the wood with this twisted pair which when glued in I cut but leave the twisted pair in to act like the steel reinforcements in concrete. I have been doing that for over 45 years and they never fail. Giving the ply two coats of cuprinol managed to make the ply last for 40 years when the supplier said that he will guarantee it for only ten years.

    I don’t really like the flat bottom although it probably won’t affect the stability either way. I do prefer the stressed plywood system

    Very nice! You made a great job of that you must be very proud. Have you ever calculated the total cost of materials?

    • @aeropunk4127
      @aeropunk4127  6 років тому

      It was about £650, maybe a bit more including small bits and pieces. I could probably have made it for about £450 if I had only taped the outside of the seams/joints and not used so much epoxy resin or epoxy primer paint. However as my children go in it I decided to make it a bit more resilient and thus spent a bit more. Three years/seasons on it is still in good shape despite being kept outside, though under a tarpaulin in winter.

    Great boat my friend. Did you used marine grade plywood or “exterior grade” plywood? Thanks.

    • @aeropunk4127
      @aeropunk4127  5 років тому +1

      Hello Omar,
      I used basic marine plywood to BS (British Standard) 1088. I could have gone for better specification but this suited my needs as I was going to paint it and use it several times a month. The better specification was considerably more expensive and would only have been needed if I was building a boat that was constantly on the water.
      So far it has survived four years use without degradation. However I am currently sheathing the outside with glass fibre as I don't have the time to keep repainting it after it gets bashed about during use.

    I've built a canoe myself and used epoxy to cover it. I'm worried that the epoxy is too stiff and that it will eventually break sooner or later. Did you experience any problems like that? Good job btw :)

    • @aeropunk4127
      @aeropunk4127  5 років тому +1

      I haven't experienced any problems with the epoxy I used on the seams. The canoe structure is relatively stiff. It has survived slipping off the top of my car (Ford Mondeo Estate) when I fumbled putting it on the roof bars in a strong breeze. At the end of last year I covered the bottom of the canoe with GRP to improve it's resistance to use and the weather. I did however use polyester resin as this is a lot cheaper than the epoxy. I have been told that it is slightly more flexible than epoxy. We will see what happens over the next year.

    I see that in the beginning you glued together two pieces of plywood end to end, how did you do that without the plywood splitting somehow? Is there some technique I’m not seeing? This might be kind of a dumb question but I am very new to canoe building.

    • @aeropunk4127
      @aeropunk4127  5 років тому

      Hello Malcolm,
      I glued the two pieces together using epoxy. Whilst the Epoxy was curing the plywood was screwed to another piece of plywood with a sheet of polythene between to prevent adhesion. The plywood used was good quality to BS1088 standard so it did not tend to split. After the initial gluing the wood had to be handled carefully before the fibre glass tape was added to avoid cracking the epoxy. Avoid cheaper, lower specification plywoods as these have voids which give weaker joints if a void is present and are generally weaker over all. They also tend to de laminate far more easily due to inferior glues and wood, especially when wet.

      Hello Juan Carlos, if you go to the website www.selway-fisher.com then you should be able to order from there. It will cost a bit more in postage, not much. See here, www.selway-fisher.com/ordering_plans_and_manuals.htm.

      Selway Fisher quote 20 Kg for the canoe, which appears to be for the 4.0 mm ply version, I get just over 33 kg using 6.0 mm. A bit heavy, but not far off what I'd expected. I did build it to be strong given my children were to go in it. I reckon I could have saved a bit of mass on the reinforcing and how I made the seats.

    How much wide is it? And what type of Wood did you use ?

    • @aeropunk4127
      @aeropunk4127  3 роки тому

      Hello Naser. The canoe is approx 33 inchs/0.84 metres wide. I built the canoe with plywood manufactured to British Standard 1088 (BS 1088). It is more expensive than standard ply but is better quality with no voids (gaps).
      After 5 years of use I have started to sheath the outside of the canoe in glass fibre (grp). The wood has stood up well but the paint needed redoing every two years. This is with even using good expensive paint.

    Why didn’t you glass the canoe?

    • @aeropunk4127
      @aeropunk4127  4 роки тому

      At the time I liked the wood look, it was cheaper without - I was up to about £500 & it was lighter without the GRP.
      6 years later after several end of year sessions sanding and repainting I have now glassed the bottom & lower sides.

    What is "GRP tape"?

    • @Saksikoipi
      @Saksikoipi 6 років тому

      I'm not sure, but it looks like glass fiber cloth which can be impregnated with polyester or epoxy resin.

    • @aeropunk4127
      @aeropunk4127  6 років тому

      The GRP tape is the fibre cloth woven in such a way that it can be bought as a roll of tape/strip available in various widths.

    weight?

    • @aeropunk4127
      @aeropunk4127  7 років тому

      Hmm, never weighed it. It's light enough for me to carry on my shoulders and man handle onto the top of my Ford Mondeo by myself. The main problem is it's size when lifting it, especially when wet & slippery with a good wind blowing.
