Trucking is unique because like he said he's an owner-operator. So he's a an independent contractor, not an employee. He owns his rig. Just for clarification!

I trained my wife at year 19 and she’s been trucking with me for 5 years now. Went from seeing her 2-3 times a month to literally 24/7/365 😂.
I’ve owned 3 trucks myself but sold my last one back in 2016.
We just do a short dedicated run these days. Nashville to Texarkana and back 5 days a week pulling FedEx double trailers. She takes us from Nashville to Texarkana through the morning while I sleep and I bring us back. We’ve got a little extra stretch we added to our run but we only run about 5200 miles a week. As far as trucking goes this dedicated run I’ve got is a gravy train on biscuit wheels.

A truck without the trailer cost $250,000!! This is nice but you have a limit on how much you can haul. 80,000 lbs is max and that truck alone could weigh 30,000 lds by itself.

PTO stands for power take off. It's normal a shaft driven by the engine to power things like winches, hydraulic pumps, generators and many other accessories.

On most big trucks it’s just for locking in the 2 axle. Really Comes in handy getting traction. Unless you’ve got a wet line that’s about all it’s for.

Good to see some companies take care of their owner-operators. Stay the hell away from retailer distribution jobs. You wait for 4 hours for the jackasses at the loading dock to unload your trailer, and then they won't even let you use their restroom. You end up losing so much time that you could have been spending picking up another load. It's not safe to pick up another load hours later than usual, because you mess up your sleep cycle. A driver with an irregular sleep schedule is a liability on the road.

I drove Over-the-road trucks for almost 20 years. A typical trip out is 2-3 weeks, depending on the individual and what you haul. The usual runs are somewhere around 700 to over 1,000 miles (+) from shipper to consignee. Folks like this guy do specialized hauling, they might haul something to a location and have to wait there for a few days in order to load up and go back or on to the next place if you do trade shows. A truck like this makes it easier than paying for a hotel which might be $50-80 per night or more.

When I was in my late teens, I was working for a warehouse unloading containers from Japan in California. One of the drivers had a new Volvo Semi truck, and he let some of us take a look at the sleeper section. It was very impressive. Had a bed, microwave, refrigerator, satellite TV and a bunch of storage. It was pretty cool to check out.

Ive seen a lot of changes in trucking in the last 30 years of driving. GPS, electronic log books. My company replaced all their trucks with automatic transmissions now so Daz wouldnt have trouble driving, he would have to watch so he didnt hit anything with the trailer though.

Reliable Carriers is legendary for being a good vehicle transportation company. They're the leader in the US for that field.
In my mind, they're really good at collector cars. Those trailers would have a lift gate.

  • @jaywilliamson9860
    @jaywilliamson9860 4 місяці тому

Office Blokes you should realize only about 1-2% of the long haul trucks in the US have sleepers that size. Besides the added weight, the overall length makes it difficult to get in some places to load and unload.

Be careful what you wish for my friend. A lot of relationships work best when you're not up each other's asses 24/7.
Some people are fine with it, but it would drive me nuts. I need my space and alone time just as much as I need my time with my girl.

This isn't even a dedicated "car carrier". He can pull whatever trailer he wants, and even that trailer can carry regular household moving stuff. When you move house to house the movers put your stuff in massive containers designed to fit inside those trailers. So he could haul five or six of those.

Speaking from personal experience as an over the road truck driver myself, those transmissions are a bitch to learn at first. Truck transmissions deal with so much torque they don't have synchronized gears like modern car transmissions. So you have to double clutch; which is just pushing the clutch in just enough to disconnect from the flywheel to shift out of gear then again to shift into your next gear. When learning the shift patterns they teach you to use the Adams Family theme song to help learn the clutch, clutch timing. But once you get going and know it, it's like riding a bike. It's just second nature. But basically it's like a double 5 speed transmission in your car.
Basic manual transmissions are 10 speeds; 1-5 on the low side and 6-10 on the high. 13, 15, 18 speed transmissions are the same 10 speed layout, they just have whats known as a splitter to manage engine RPM for pulling power and/or fuel economy in different gears. So basically every gear, or those equipped by the splitter, have a high and low setting for each gear. And yeah, I've seen up to a 24 speed transmission in a truck specially built to haul giant mining equipment. Most basic over the road trucks (OTR) are approximately 70' long: 53' trailer and 17' for the truck itself. Giant trucks like this gentleman's get a steering upgrade with that custom cab so they can turn a lot tighter. Otherwise they've got a turning radius of the USS Enterprise. Having your own bathroom and shower on the truck would be amazing. It just limits the amount of weight we can legally haul. But the trade-off is not having to use some of the nasty ass public restrooms.
Currently the company I work for will keep us as busy we want to be. For drivers that want to bust their butts, it's not hard to cover over 100,000 miles a year. For those that may want to run a little slower, they're generally welcome to within reason. My company has a lot of freight traffic in and out of Mexico, but our US based drivers don't take freight directly into Mexico. We'll take US freight bound for Mexico to one of our partner companies from Mexico so they can take it into Mexico. I've been told it's because the way trucks can be loaded is drastically than the US, as are the driving regulations and safety. So rather than pay outrageous insurance for our US drivers to drive into Mexico, it's SO much easier to just partner with a Mexican carrier and have them take that freight in and out of Mexico. We do however have US based drivers that do take loads into Canada since their laws around trucking are so close to the US, so it's not a big deal or change to have drivers from either country driving in the other.
I think I've rambled long enough and I apologize! But hopefully that helps answer some questions!

I have never seen a track cab that long, it's massive. The cab alone looks like a a box truck in terms of size, and then it's got the entire trailer as well. Holy shit. Live in SC, driven to Florida and back twice, lived in Alaska once, but I've never seen such a beast of a truck on the road before. Crazy huge. That truck has to be limited to certain roads, I can't imagine seeing that think taking corners in a city or something.
