She's not an atheist. The rest of this scene, which is left out, shows us that Blair is hurt. As a little girl she thought that being good and saying her prayers would make God save her parent's marriage and instead the divorce happened anyway. Blair's angry with God. This world is not perfect, humans are not perfect and life is not perfect. God never said it would be. But Mrs. Garret reminds Blair of His constant love for her and that although there it's hard to make sense of her hurt for her parents that she's able to help a lot of other's around her with the same kind of hurt; that maybe there is some sense to made of that.

Well they cut before the part where Blair explains she prayed for her parents to stay together and when they divorced she was angry at God for not listening to her so she stopped believing He. existed. And Jo punching her says far more about Jo than it does Blair
Because Jo let people know in the beginning she hits people. She was the easiest one to want to smash (hit) somebody. Like many folk, they will be more surprised about someone not believing in God than in seeing someone hit someone, especially if the hitter threatens people.
I remember that Lisa Whelchel refused to do an episode where Natilie loses her virginity to her boyfriend. It was because that Blair was originally supposed to lose her virginity but Whelchel said no because pre marital sex goes against her Christian beliefs.
What an episode, LOL! I remember it being a two-parter and when Eve Plumb's character says when she told her family she was going to become a nun they called her everything from a liar to a lesbian. The shock and dismay on Tootie and Natalie's face when she said they called her a 'lesbian' was too much.
This was the hottest that either of them got at each other throughout the whole run of the show, far as I can remember! there were times they were close, but it didn't get this heated!
One of the reason I like this episode so much (other that God being mentioned, of course) is because Blair really IS a Christian. But on here, she was just acting, so would ya GIVE HER A BREAK SHEESH.
Both individuals did a good job in this scene. Jo I believe got frustrated with Blair because they was involved in a heated debate. I don't think her character hit Blair for not believing in God. I think she hit her due to feeling disrespected, and she became real angry and hit her without thinking. It can happen to the best of us. It don't matter who you are.
That's the same thing that I was thinking. I used to really enjoy watching this show. I was pretty young then. Perhaps that's why I didn't remember it.
I just think she snapped, and hit her without thinking. Because Blair was screaming at her. Fights break out for various reasons all of the time. And it's always because one or both people involved end up snapping before they realize it.

It's because of all the bad theology out there and sad to say, a lot of those wrong beliefs are taught in churches. God isn't cursing people. He redeemed mankind from all the curses of Deuteronomy 28. See Galatians 3:13. If someone is attacked by any of the curses, it's not God doing it. See John 10:10. People may be asking why Lisa Whelchel chose to do this episode, but later rejected taking part in the losing virginity episode. In the end, Blair was NOT an atheist. She was merely upset about her step-sister's choice to become a nun, thinking that she was wasting her life, as well as her parent's divorce. Her rejection of God was only a lapse, and she later accepted His existence.
@@ddm62571 It was a very good episode, and it was actually the second of two parts. You may recognize Eve Plumb (Jan Brady from The Brady Bunch) as Blair's stepsister who announces that she is becoming a nun.
The funny thing is that in this episode, Jo wanted to be a nun 😲 Yes, REALLY? I guess her religious studies never got to the "turning the other cheek" part.
Being a good christian doesn't mean not ever standing up for what you believe in, or being in any way prim and perfect. Being a christian simply means that we look to God for guidance. That we acknowledge that we are sinners in the eyes of God and wish to do better. We look for his hand working in our lives and in the lives around us and try to do the best that we can do while we're here. To pray and look to him during the hard times and to give thanks to him for every blessing that he gives us. We know that no matter what, no matter how bad we are or what things we do wrong that he will love us always. Sometimes I just break down crying because I don't feel worthy of that love, but I am grateful that he has saved me and that I have him in my life. The thing I didn't like is that she refused to do that episode, but it was ok for her to take Mrs Garrett to a strip joint
Yes, it was odd that she agreed to do the strip joint episode, but i think it probably bothered her less because Blair in particular didn't do anything to "heavy" in that episode. I've seen a recent interview of her where she said she didn't want to participate in the virginity storyline because she felt she had a responsability to the young girls watching the show. I personally disagree with her, i think it's important to talk about those things, but at the same time i respect her, because i was born in 1996 so i have a completely different vision of the world than she does and i don't know how the world was in 1988. She was also unmarried at the time, so i think partially it was because of her image as well, and the things she believed in. Who knows, she might've felt completely different if that situation happened nowadays. As far as the atheist thing, I think everyone who was brought up religious, or voluntarily decided to follow a religion has moments of doubt sometimes, so even if you are religious you can relate to that, so, i don't know if that would've been an issue, but again i don't know her at all, just offering my perspective here.

Never understood why Blair didn't hit back. Anyways, this was three years in the making with the tension building between these two IMO.
First and foremost, it was not her style, but secondly, a rich girl going up against a Bronx street girl would be suicidal.
