Can't wait to see what the old refrigerant R410a price will be in 2 years ! Also hvac contractors telling customers that R410a systems are illegal because they are doing that now with the older R22 systems.

As an HVAC industry professional with over 50 years of experience and a full-time HVAC instructor who was a factory instructor for my last 15 years, I am pleased that this news report treated the refrigerant change fairly. The A2L mildly flammable refrigerants are not very flammable at all. The new refrigerant is not anything like propane and does not contain a fuel. In fact, if one were to attach a full cylinder of one of the several A2l refrigerants to your propane grill it would be next to impossible to get it to light. Automobile AC systems have been using A2L refrigerants for years now and we do not have cars catching on fire after a release of automobile AC refrigerant during a front end accident. Regarding the availability of the current AC refrigerants, there will be an ample supply available for many years. It will be increasing in price and will become quite expensive but it will be available. We cannot substitute an A2L refrigerant in your current AC system but the current refrigerants will continue to be available on a reduced scale which will cost a great deal more. Like everything else, the costs of HVAC equipment is increasing rapidly. If you need to replace an existing system be ready for the sticker shock. Meanwhile, on a slightly different topic, there is a great need for young people to learn the HVAC trade as we are very short on new technicians. HVAC is a hot trade to enter and there is a great deal to know and learn but it can pay very well.

I’m so sick of the government screwing the citizens over. If the politicians think it’s that big of a deal let them pay out of their own pocket to replace everybody else’s units.

Imagine the price of a propane refill for your grill in 2 years. Follow the money...

This is nonsense and monopolies lobbied against other tech and entrepreneurial competitors $ the customers deserve fair access not restricted false choices $

The switch to new refrigerants has nothing to do with monopolies or lobbyists. The environmental impact of the older refrigerants is clearly detrimental to our atmosphere. The newer environmentally friendly refrigerants are a far, far better choice from what we have been using in the past. I am not some far left green environmentalist. I am a conservative economically and politically. Common sense must prevail so we do not needlessly pollute or harm the atmosphere. The science is in on this, there is no conspiracy to create higher prices or some kind of monopoly.

Dam politicians getting involved and don’t have a clue on what they are doing to the industry. Our prices are already 50% higher than a few years ago. Make r-22 great again
