if you see a 500 rated player seemingly not knowing how knights work, no thats not the case, im just bad at counting squares it seems :(
I'm 2k on lichess, but you asked the "most accurate rating" so I put 1800 since it's known that lichess elo points are inflated. Did I do the right thing?
@@tommasoc.2207 same. Im 1730 blitz on lichess. I put 1400.
Ratings wise, best OTB was 2080 but long since retired, so have estimated about 1950. Position 3 was a teaser. Not at all sure I'm right.
My rating is a total fiction based on what bots I can usually beat if I don't rush.
Only main issue is that if a group pics a move 1% over another move we won't know this. So it's better to show the top 3 moves. Overall the video is really great.
With 80 participants i dont think you have enough data to say that "players rated in this bracket pick this move this percent of the time". All of the selected moves are candidate moves, but the important information in a data set like this is the why: how do differently skilled players analyze a basically equal position, what potential plans do they see, and what are they considering when they weigh their options. It's not a tactics puzzle.
Nvm i guess they were just tactics thats not what i thought the point of this video would be
dont be so picky, video is fine
@@thetanman3130 What? They're only giving constructive feedback. They didn't say the video was bad, only what could be done to improve. Not at all the same as "being picky."
@@thetanman3130 they said the video was great... this is a comment youtubers should want to see, so they could improve themselves :) constructive feedback is good.
As a 1600 rated player who spends lots of time in the local chess club i wanted to do Nf5 at position 3.
Never felt such shame in my life
*when you guessed the right moves for the wrong reasons*
me: i may be an idiot but at least im not stupid
That was a really cool concept and must have taken good effort to collect, compile and process all the data. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and solving the positions, great content.
Me seeing Qa4 in the last puzzle after suggesting Nf5 in position 3: *You know, I'm something of a GM myself.*
Nice! 🤣
Knife f5!!!
-Ben Finegold
I actually had picked out Nc3 and I still managed to guffaw at all those players not noticing the pin, until a minute later when I realized _I did not notice the pin_
I did exactly the same! Half dunce, half genius.
Xc6 was my choice. I thought if Qxd1 then Nxd1. If Bxf3 then Qxd8+ and finally xf3. If Bxf3 then Qxf3. You could prevent black from castling, get to eat one pawn and handle the problem of pinning. I don't know if there's any threat that I missed, but I find it odd that no one played this. I did miss Qa4 though, though I kind of stopped looking after finding my xc6.
More of the same please. Sorry I missed the opportunity to participate.
I feel exactly the same A-PLUS content, It might be helpful to show the previous move to possibly give some insight into the opponent's plan. I really appreciate your great time and effort to help us.
Nelson put the new link in the comments if you wanna participate.
@@tommasoc.2207 Thank you so much. I gave it a shot.
GothamChess says to solve 5 (and only 5 - by really thinking about it - not just give-it-a-go and guess) puzzles per day. Think about it until you solve it. I've taken that advice and it's working - I'm getting better. With this approach, you've basically gamified this process and made it a small competition - a "can I do better than my peers" type game. Well done. I like it!
I think he said 15 puzzles
He said 15 actually if I remember correctly?
5 is enough, in my experience. It's far better just to keep doing it than to do 15 and burn out, or lose focus.
@@theinacircleoftheancientpu492 You have good point there
Be it 5 or 15, while I've been trying to do more puzzles to work on tactics I haven't always thought them through all the way. I like the advice... ty!
“So yeah the lowest rated players found the best move. Anyway lets move on” bruh that was way more ironic than you made it seem
Me, an 1800 in position 3: Lol Nf5 easy
2 seconds later
Me: oh no my king
Did you hear the little buzzer sound in your subconscious?
Me, 1800 something also considered that and only didnt do it cause his bishop could have just taken it and the problem would have been the same and not cause the move wasnt possible haha
In the end I would have just taken the pawn cause white was up a piece anyways and it solves everything and it looked like white is still better
but the engine had the best solution ! also if white wanted to keep the bishop he could have just attacked the queen with the knight and then retreated the bishop
fun and great video idea though !!!
How high are you rated in blitz and rapid chess vibes ?
just like Eric Rosen but you had to one up him
I'd give a double Thumbs Up if I could!
Yes, please keep going with this format. It was SOOOO valuable the understand the different thinking at each level and to also hear your thinking AND the Stockfish recommendation.
This format is a very unique thing that you've got going and I won't be surprised if other Chess UA-camrs want to imitate youl.
In position 4, I didn't even see the attack on the bishop. I already would have played it just because of c6, and the threat of Nxe5 was already a bonus.
I'm glad I'm not alone, I was also kind of surprised/disappointed in myself for seeing Qa4 but not realising the Bishop was also under attack
Same here. I was proud that I found the best move and instantly ashamed that I missed the bish.
We a lot.
Really interesting video. Definitely be up for taking part in these on a regular basis
This made chess study a lot more interesting. Especially since we had more input from other rated players.
This is a super cool concept for a video. You and I had the same thought process for position 1 with Rd1 haha
I agree, and even though I'm only 2 minutes into the video, I would've played Rd1 too.
@@rg7535 holy cracks im 900 and I was proud to realise to toxicity in the first position. I considered making space for the king, move the rook or smith but the g3 idea was already locked in xDDD
Btw great find!
@@sofiana580 g3 was good move👌🏼
Nb5,Rd1,Be3,g3 all r good move
I was thinking Rd1 too. Not R2D2... just kidding.
Great idea! I took part in this one and I would gladly take part in videos like this in the future...
im 2200 and i also played Ne8 on position 2 lmao, kinda funny now. Glad I found Bg4 on position 3 though.
Why not Nh5, it accomplishes the same plus allows Nf4 later?
(Edit: in Position 2)
1800 here and same
@@Hopefully2025 The thing is that Bg5 is an annoying threat with the intention of Knight going b5 to fork on c7, also Bishop on e2 attacks Nh5... so the line would be Nh5 Bg5 f6 Bxh5 thus messing up black's kingside pawn structure and the threat of Nb5 still stands - Queen will have to stay and defend for few moves, or black will have to play c6 which is obviously bad due to the semi open file at C file, in case any exchanges occur.
I was actually thinking of playing h6 Nfd7 f5 ideas but it wasn't shown in the video, so it's not the best move I guess
im 1500 and same
His done it. This guy creates the best content and gives what his viewers want.we should all get behind him and leave his link at other sites. He deserves to go viral and blow up!!!!
Also I think this should be a regular feature. No other channel does this and when people talk about chess instruction many say wouldn’t it be good if a chess channel done this. Now we have it. This is so instructional I believe you could just base a chess channel on it. I believe Nelson is the first to do it that I know of
Overtime he should have no probs getting subscribers/ patreons participating. I missed it cause my father was sick but as he suggested I just paused the video anyway .
GREAT CONTENT- This channel just gets better n better!!!👏👌👍
Agreed. This is a very unique, engaging and helpful form of chess coaching.
1700 rated player here answering these before seeing the answers:
1. Rd1 (prevents Nd4, also Rooks are happy on semi-open files)
2. Nfxe4 (Nxe4 Nxe4 Qxe4 Bf4 skewers the Queen and the Rook, winning the Rook in the end)
3. Kf1 (unpins the Knight, possible moves afterwards are Bg4 hoping for a Bishop trade, to play Nf5 that attacks the queen as well as the g7 pawn, and also prevents the Queen for maybe coming to g3)
4. Qa4 (attacks the c6 Pawn and the g4 Bishop. After Bxf3 the c6 pawn can be taken with check and after Ke7 the Bishop can be taken. The Queen can't block the check because of Qxa8)
Awesome idea - it makes me think a lot more than just binge watching chess videos one after the other. Will always make me wait with anticipation for the solution video :). Great job
This was a lot of fun. Thanks for getting viewers involved!
This is a great video to watch and learn things. Turn this into a series! we'll learn a lot from this. nice to see how others think and why! i'm at 950 now and climbing slowly, i saw moves from my range and a couple past it, so i guess my thinking matches my growth. Thanks!
Fantastic video. It highlights what different rated players see and recognize. More of these videos please.
Just another comment saying your videos are fantastic. A tier above any other chess explanation videos I've seen.
Position 3 was really tough.. Enjoyed the exercise tho!! Thanks Nelson for the work you put in!
I enjoyed participating. This format would be an interesting regular feature on your channel. Good content.
Only found your channel recently but really enjoyed this video, love the format, was both entertaining and edicational. Cheers!
I really enjoyed this video, I just started playing chess and I'm not very good but it was interesting to see which levels of players picked which moves and why. I was proud of myself that I picked the same answer as you in position 3, although it took me over 5 minutes of thinking to come up with it ;)
Thanks for posting and yes please more of this, especially positions where there is no obvious material gain but the best moves are for improving the position or creating weaknesses for the opponent.
looks like you found some weekly content. good job. Chess content for the less experienced is usually either principles, tips and tricks or guess the ELO. This seems to have a bit of everything. More Please!
This was a lot of fun! 😀 You found some really tricky and unclear positions to test us. I'm happy with my results, got a bit of a confidence boost after picking the best moves for 2, 3 and 4. In position 1, if I was in a blitz game I definitely would've been destroyed, but in rapid I might've had a pretty good chance.
Hey Nelson i'm new to chess and i wanted to say please keep making videos, they're the best i've come across at explaining things at a down to earth level. There's plenty of chess streamers out there but please keep up what you do because what you're doing here is so valuable to people of all levels learning chess.
Wow! How did I just find you!
I found Bg4 by Position 3 and I feel like a million bucks!
Also ngl Position 4, for anyone over 1200 should be kinda obvious.
I was like damn, I wish I could have participated, but you said to pause and figure it out by myself. That made it interactive.
Awesome content! Great teacher!
That was great! Love this, please keep doing these!!
Really cool video. I love seeing the different perspectives with explanations
Very instructive tactics training! I find it particularly interesting to find out how differently "others" think about the same position, so one sees many "hidden ideas" during the resolution!
Absolutely amazing content idea. Can't wait for more. You are an amazing creator and teacher.
After watching this vid I've confirmed myself to be somewhere between 900 and stockfish 14. I found 2 best moves and 2 blunders somehow
These are good exercises it helps you notice your blunders you make in a game by not seeing other moves on the board. Good Work!
Awesome video idea. I started watching Gotham Chess last October and loved the mix of entertainment and learning but really liked it more because there IS learning. You are going to grow fast for the same reason and this content, although clearly hard work, will be appreciated and rewarded. You will be at 100k subscribers by the end of the year. No, end of October!
I may have to come back to this comment in October ;-)
This is so cool! I love the effort in all the videos with the data sets. Really lets you see how stronger players think. Keep it up! Cant wait till this channel explodes
Very interesting video concept, really liked the challenge and see exactly how well I did compared to other elo ratings. Uploading one short chess puzzle a day could be a nice idea instead of multiple ones in a single video. I have to say 4 in one video is a little too much. Other than that great video
I enjoyed the video, maybe the one other thing that could be added is a comparison of the stockfish analysis of each most common move, so we can see the degree that each would change the game
I'm rated 708, when I saw position 3 my first thought was to do the move Bg4. I only thought this for just wanting to do a trade when up on material - surprised to see stockfish saw the same move, although a mostly different idea.
I really enjoyed this video concept. Looking forward for more videos like this. The chess positions are chosen very well too!
As a 1100, I made all the moves that 1100s would do 😂
You should make this a series. Very insightful. (For full disclosure, my strength level is in the 1600-1800 range by USCF rating and typically a tier higher/lower on online chess servers, depending on the strength of the server).
Very original idea, Nelson! I'd be interested in seeing a weekly series of challenges similar to these. Thank you for all your effort in coming up with such an innovative and instructive concept!
Done!
Do some more of these - perhaps a common theme video. It engages us and I really enjoyed it. I made a few headslaps which means I missed some ideas that I feel I learned from. Thank you. I made sure that I had the notification bell selected. I'm rated about 1350. Great position selection!
I gradually went through all the answers in my head and denied them. But then I saw Bg4. After that I watched the explanation in expectation of this move. I'm proud of myself. Anyway I lose to 800 rated players so yeah.
haha yeah couldn't stop the fist bump either! just thought I could save the bishop after! Guess that wasn't possible
@Caden Bolt they’re talking about position 3
I saw BG4 bc I was like "check isn't scary. I'm up a piece and trading pieces while up is what Gotham told me was good". 900 player. Very proud. Its where my mind immediately went too:)
The first position came out of the Smith Morra gambit with the move order
1.e4 c5 2.d4 cxd4 3.c3 dxc3 4.Nxc3 Nc6 5.Nf3 e6 6.Bc4 Qc7 7.Qe2 Nf6 8.O-O Ng4
In the first position I didn’t notice Nd4 as a response to h3 but I did see h5, so I actually got the same idea as stockfish to go Nb5 followed by h3, with the only difference being if black moved the queen back to b8 to stay on the diagonal I was looking at g3 for some tricky ideas with Bc4
Blitz 900, rapid 1300
-
1. g3 - to prevent that aggression for good
2. Na6 - I noticed that rook was moved to b file and white wants to push b pawn, so I defend the square.
3. Bg4 - I noticed that my bishop will be trapped after I move the king back, so I decided to protect it with another bish, therefore Bg4. So when the queen comes to g3 I could move the king back without losing a piece
4. e5 - to bring one more defender for d pawn and also prevent e4 pawn to move forward and attack the knight, if black pushes e pawn then yes you can take it with the other knight but then there is bishop takes f3, you take with queen and you lose d pawn, or take with g pawn and it’s a double pawn which is meh.
Yeah these are fun, be really fun if you can get even just 1 or 2 gm’s on board also. Just to see what their ideas are. Another great video, thanks
won't make that much sense cause either they will find the best move 10 out of 10 or they have to use puzzles that destroy our 1000 brains xDD
Wow... "just 1 or 2 GMs", no less! 😂
@@spartanthe300ththermopylae4 and no more! ;)
@@sofiana580 that’s what would be fun to me. To see the difference between stock fish and a GM. Or if they differ from the 1600+ group. We will never know unless we do it lol. They might not go for like a pin because they see something even deeper. Who knows. Be fun to see though gotta admit that :)

Since you asked what we wanted, I really enjoyed this video... Would enjoy more of this type.. it was fun as well as something I learnt from.
Very interesting idea…. I would like to participate.
I am so happy I found that Bg4! heck yeah! Loved this video, hope it becomes a regular thing.
I like this video. Would be really cool seeing the players actually talk through with a little clip and a rating next to them, then you break it down as an after thought. (alot of effort though and different video style).
Enjoy 'd the vid !
That would be cool to watch but it would require a lot of work (collecting, watching, sorting and editing) on Nelson's part and given that he collects the reasons why they've made their moves, he is already articulating the same themes for each group.
I'd rather get more of this kind of videos rather than less but with more fancy editing.
Great video! Was very interesting to see the responses across the board for the same exact positions. Great excercise too!
Agree, this is a great video concept! Would prefer if the question was posted on your YT channel rather than discord though :)
P1: g3 to stop Queen accessing h2 for mate. I thought about Rfd1 as well but decided to address the immediate threat instead, I guess.
P2: Qd2. Idea was to swing the queen around to h6 and attack his undefended queen. Nfxe4 was the first thing I noticed, but didn't see the bishop follow-through skewer at the end, so I wrote it off.
P3: I'm dumb. Don't judge me. I wanted the illegal move.
P4: Qa4. Saw it first as a way to defend the pawn on d5 while pinning blacks' c6 pawn to his king+building pressure on it, was debating between that and e4 and then saw the fork after a couple of minutes. Original thought was O-O but didn't like the idea of Bgxf3 sac, didn't want to retake with Queen because I really wanted Queen to attack on her side.
Doesn't mean a lot since the survey is already over and these are the results of it, but didn't see the original. 800 rated.
That basically cofirmed my rating of 1,100. Enjoyed the vid.
thanx for this! really nice to get some inter-action vibe into this tube consuming ... how interesting it may be and actually is. your spread sheed might grow really large this time.
Love how us low rated players Technically got the right answer but for the wrong reasons
keep this content, i think for us low-rated players its great we can think about positions and then get a feedback right about same ones.
My moves would have been:
1.Be3 It seems to defend and develops a piece. It's not as strong as the recommended move but I think it's ok?
2. Nfxe4 I saw the tactics
3. Bf3 for the same reason you explained. I did considered Kf1 but that made me very uncomfortable
4. Qa4 but without conviction because after he takes my knight and I take his pawn, his king is in terrible position and his pieces completely underdeveloped but I'm not quite sure on how to continue the attack and I'm about to destroy my pawn structure to recapture his bishop.
i was thinking about that when he was talking about position 4 is what you do after you expose your king by taking the bishop. You can't take the rook as the queen protect it but his king is in the center of the board so you have to keep the tempo so he doesn't take advantage of your damage struction.
You should do more of these, this is pretty instructive!
I think you get these weird results because you don't distinguish between lichess and chess com ratings.
Very valuable exercises here. I would like to see a regular series of these. Excellent format. Many thanks.
All 4 of my moves were the stockfish moves :D
Im a bit proud of myself.
reported.
me too, but but they are not the best stockfish moves
ok you are a stock fish... i disagree in 3d problem
Pre vid #1
I would move rook d1 for the open file. It would also prevent the checkmate with a couple of trades. Once they stopped forked at a7 it wouldn't be a fork anymore because the rook was moved.
this would be an amazing series, please do more videos like these
This channel is awesome. Great to see it blowing up. Well done mate, keep up the good work! Just subscribed 👍🏼
Me: tries to make illegal move on board 3.
Also me: finds Qa4 on board 4.
Well, I did not know about this channel before the post was created, so I am sharing my thoughts here (I am a mid-1100):
POSITION # 1: Nb5 attacking the queen and also stopping Bd6 which can be a nuisance putting pressure on h2 (I failed to see Nd4 but I caught Bd6 being a threat)
POSITION # 2: b6 to solidify my Knight and maybe I can activate my bishop to b7 or a6 in the future.
POSITION # 3: Honestly I ALSO thought of Bf3 to free up the e2 square anticipating the threat of Qg3+, then maybe I can play Qe1 to try to trade queens, or Kd2 and Kc1 to somehow hide my king (although I missed the fact that Kf1 traps the white rook for probably the entire game).
POSITION # 4: I consider Ne4 so that I can play Ned2 followed by Qa4
The UA-cam algorithm has blessed you, very good content
Very Cool. Very engaging. Particularly like the comparisons of reasoning behind the moves chosen - far more valuable than the dodgy ratings statistics.
That's so funny that the engine recommends the move that only under 900s thought of.
Me, a over 900 who found this move: "guess I don't exist."
This was amazing, great job. I went through almost the same thought process as the lower levels.
MFW i can find the stockfish moves, rated 600 in blitz and rapid and rated 1500+ on puzzles
Me too lol
Brilliant video, found that really enjoyable, love to see more of these.
Heey you tricked me hehe
Im about 2000 and i assumed its kings indian position in 2nd problem so i was debating between Nh5 and Ne8 but i would ve played Nh5
Really good one. That was one of the most instructive and entertaining chess posts I've seen. Like to see it as a regular feature.
Yay! I matched Stockfish on position 3. I was briefly worried that Bg4 wasn't even going to make the video. It seemed like the move with the best long-term prospects, as long as there weren't any immediate tactics against it. I couldn't find a functional attack for black though, so that's what I went with.
I was feeling like a genius when I found the move Qa4 the stock fish move (am 1000 rated rapid)
10 mins into the video.. you're such a great teacher man. Really breaks down the position. Brilliant idea of a video.
My answers: g3, Nfxe4, c3 (ouch), e4
Overall, not a bad job besides position 3, but that's about how well I expected to do at my level. Excellent content! Glad to see there's someone else out there who enjoys combining statistical analysis and chess :)
Definitely make more videos like this. This was interactive and quite fun!
I immediately recognized position 2 as a King's Indian position. I play it with black, and even though the I knew Rb1 was unusual I did miss the tactic to win the rook because I'm so accustomed to playing Nh5 in that kind of position and that was the move I focused in on.
Position 3 I decided that the best thing to do was give back material, but it was tough finding the best way to do so. I considered Bxh4, but that loses to Qf4+ Bf3 Qxe3+ Kf1 Rxh4. I ultimately decided on just playing Bf3 straight away, allowing Qg3+ Ke2 Qxg5 and then playing d4 to cut off the black bishop on c5. Very pleased to see the NM chose the same move. I thought of Bg4 briefly but forgot to calculate it after the other lines I looked at first so it never got real consideration.
And position 4 I only considered two moves. O-O and e4. I picked e4 so that if black takes on d5 I have an additional way to recapture with the possibility of getting a juicy passed pawn, though one that could be hard to maintain, or even just getting a nice outpost on d5 for my knight. It also opens up the diagonal for my bishop to develop.
9:52 never been so happy in my life. I saw it 😃😃😃😃
Very cool! I just came across your channel and submitted my answers to the second quiz. Looking forward to the results!
Really good stuff. I’m upset I missed that bishop fork idea because I don’t usually miss those kinds of things when I’m playing someone, but I thought too hard which is oddly bad for someone like me.
Thanks a lot it was something new and good to evaluate us to see the reason behind each different move. Yes, please make more videos like this. You are awesome!!
Nice recon on the enemy. It gives a little insight into how to adapt my game to the opponents rating.
Feels so good to be right, I am 1700 and got the best move every position except in the second were I would have played Nh5 to continue with f5 later on. This is an interesting topic to me, shows how different rating ranges think, we can learn something from this data.
Your videos are always really interesting! If you do more videos like this one, I think they'd really be an opportunity to learn something new. You rule, man! 😘
This was an amazing video. High quality 10/10 hope to see more. Subscribed for sure.
This video is by far the most interesting and fun way to learn complex chess. It's even a way that I showed a friend how the mind of a chess player works. I was amazed at how I generally had the right move but not the best move at the level of the NM or Stockfish. I did however nail position 4 and even saw all of the potential lines that could occur afterwards. I am going to watch all of your videos and really feel this style of not droning over opening theory and memorization is incredible for me. Thank you and well done sir 👍👍👍
Informative and professional, I really liked this concept. 👌
You’re putting out great content. Props for that. Thank you
