Sore throat cause you don't see 🙈

- Sore throat after surgery is not uncommon, and it's because of the anesthesia typically. However, that sore throat is usually very temporary and gets better after an hour or two. I always discuss the risks and benefits with patients to make sure that we are safely administering the anesthesia and minimizing the risk of side effects, such as from the breathing tube causing a sore throat. This is the process called intubation, placing an endotracheal tube (ETT) or laryngeal mask airway (LMA), and connecting to a ventilator.
I have always wondered why and now, yes, I get it.
This is very under-explained to patients. As an RN (PACU/ICU), this is one of the most frequent things I end up explaining. Patients need to be more prepared for this.
This isn't at all a nursing scope of practice, in any way. Respiratory therapists and, if in the operating room, anaesthesiologists, are the ones who use this equipment.
After surgery I couldn't burp for a while. Not sure why.
Yes!
The worst sore throats I have ever had were after my surgeries. I never imagined how big that was. No wonder it hurt!
This is a misrepresentation. This is not the device they use for procedures. This is used in emergency situations that are 99% of the time outside the hospital. Also, that device is fully inflated with air. If it was delayed, like when it is removed, it's not nearly that big. This video is misleading.
@@BuckeyeLawThanks!
Oh me also for ages abd the nurse wouldn't believe me ,I had to cry to get some pain relief so I could sleep
Why are they so darn big
No way that would fit into my throat without damage. Is there another sort to use
Wow, that’s one thing I didn’t need to know about! Now all I can imagine is bruising and tearing, permanent damage.
Where does the breathing tube go if the patient is having surgery on their throat? Can you move it out of the way so the surgeon can work? Or is the tube not effective if you move it? Thanks! ❤❤❤
It can go in the nose
@@MedicalSecrets I was wondering where it goes too. I'm having a Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion, coming up soon. Although your videos are very informative and helpful, after watching them, I get weak. ☺️
@@MedicalSecretshi, i have a sore throat due to them putting a breathing tube down . Its 5 days and is still sore, what can i do? Thanks
@@elliottfireice4394hey suck it up, are you better now
@@meatspin. that was rude! I hope you experience it 10 times worse.
Just had a Hemi-Thyroidectomy last week and now I have vocal paralysis. 😢 The intubation tube was too big, according to what the doctors said. It was an 8 mm. I’m 5’4/158 lbs. Not sure why they would use that size on me. 😭 Now my singing voice is gone. My voice is gone in general.
I read studies about taking 50mg zinc lozenges prior to OT so cleared it with my medical team and took the lozenger 2 hours before surgery and first time ever, woke with no sore throat 🌻
I thought you're not supposed to take anything like 8 hours prior to surgery
@@bar-b5469no .. some advanced surgeons depending on surgery, allow you to drink clear liquids up to 2 hours but generally 6 hours prior. This is just a tablet that dissolves on your tongue so no risk of aspiration .. there is more saliva in your mouth at any one time than the size of this tablet
@@bar-b5469some people aren't great with instructions.
So that's why my throat was sore after my surgery- no one ever told me about it, definitely under-explained...
I don't want to know any of this. MY JOB is to take a good nap. I'll leave the rest to you guys! 😂
I think you might be right. I have a surgery next month and am starting to get TMI. Might give this channel a miss until after.
This video makes me want to get in shape and eat healthy now
you’d get that whenever you are under anesthesia , in shape or not. you cannot breathe when you’re under.
That's huge. Do you at least put a gel on the tube so that it goes smoother? I can't breathe looking at that tube 🤣
Yes! That old Kentucky jelly (KY!) When that LMA is inserted, the balloon hasn't been inflated. After it's been placed, a bit of air is inserted. That helps keep the LMA seated in position. It's taped in place as well. The air is then pulled out when ready to extubate. So it's not quite that large when inserted!
@@ccoop3774 No wonder our throats hurt after surgery 😜
I’m h God, I’m having abdominal surgery soon. Sounds like a real party 🎉
It's deflated though before It's pulled out.
Only a small sore throat, no biggie.🥰
Why does it make the throat sore, though? What does it do to it?
I want to know who's responsible for pulling it out and are they careful or do they just whip it out fast any which way? Because I am still having trouble swallowing some foods after surgery 7 years ago. Is it the anesthesiologist him or herself, the surgi tech, a nurse, or some other assistant?
I was recently put under twice for kidney stones. They told me both times that I would wake up with a sore throat because of that device, however, I felt like nothing had been in my throat at all. What the heck? No pain, soreness, or anything.
Hey! I had a rhinoplasty surgery of my nose as I was suffering from a lot of block nose and deviated septum and now from the third year I suffer from throat infection which feels weird than a sore throat and after that I get cough And this happens every month. Can you please tell me what can be the reason behind it, treat it and how to take precaution. To inform you I do smoke 6-7 cigarettes a day
I know what happened to the back of my throat from that stuff after surgery, Had lots of bruising a couple lasherations.
When I was younger I had appendicitis and they removed them. When I woke up I remember I had this terrible sore throat and my aunt and Nurse explained why.
Geez. That's like having a shoe down your throat. No wonder people are uncomfortable.
1st time to see one of those! I see why I have had sore throats. Thought it was a tube, not a paddle....
That’s why my doctors laughed when I gave them a panicked look and asked what they did to me in my defenseless state🤣🤣🤣
Oh my words that thing is huge, I had no idea😮😮 no wonder the throat is sore..
Talk about sore throat after being ventilated for 2 weeks!
That makes so much sense now.
I have had numerous surgeries and the only time I have had a sore throat was when I wasn't supposed to go to sleep lol. I guess they gave me something only to relax me and I quit breathing on them. Funny thing is I remember going out fast like you do with anesthesia . But I remember my throat hurting really bad after surgery and that's when they told me they had to intubate me.
Do you have any suggestions to soothe the pain after surgery?
Wondered why i had a sore rhroat for months ..Had a MRI to find out why my throat does not feel right.Turns out i have thickening on one side of my throat like scar tissue and another lumpat the back. I recon that my throat was damaged when they put that down my throat.. hurt more thsn the operation i went into for
Thank you very much
I'm a week post septoplasty surgery and my sore throat is still not better. I vomited blood for 12 hours post surgery, so I am "assuming" these two things are to blame. But damn. It's making eating normal food incredibly difficult.
No wonder I have a very soar throat after every surgery. That thing is huge! 😢
Yes. Mine was from a colonoscopy. And I nearly choked to death afterwards because my throat muscles weren’t working properly. :-)
That appears to be a cuffed ET tube... Is the cuff inflated???
😮
That mixed with having a tonsillectomy sucks!
It makes food and liquids difficult to swallow
I must have been lucky no sore throat
My airway is so small, when I had my back reconstructed, the anesthesiologist compromised my airway and I had a stroke on the table at the age of 38. The injury was found and repaired 2 years later during a corrective procedure.
It is almost a week after surgery and I still feel pain in my throat not just sore , especially after waking up
I'm so sorry to hear that! I mentioned licorice in response to your other comment. Also be sure to tell doctors in the future before surgery
Front roof of mouth is numb now too. Throat is all scratched.
I had that airway once, i also have sleep apenea, the dr knew and i stoped breathing like 3 or 4 times during surgery, sor throat for 2 qeeks after
both my tongue and my throat were cut and bruised after two different procedures- i do not trust drs
I know. My throat swelled up so bad I could barely swallow or breathe. I don't trust doctors and will never ever have any kind of surgery again. 😒🤕🤕
Thank you doctor for the professionalism with which you do your job. You listen to your client and you always put their needs first, to ensure they live another day healthy and vibrant. Cheers to you my doctor, I celebrate the way you do your job. If it was up to me I would give you the award of being the best doctor. Thank you Dr Emovon on UA-cam for curing my bad breath naturally....
That was in my throat 💀
I was shocked too😂
No one explained that or anything else to me prior to my very first surgery. My throat hurt so bad it was nearly swollen shut. NEVER EVER AGAIN. 😢
Jim! Or salt water gargle may help❤
I just had surgery and I’m so lucky my throat didn’t hurt at all. I was coughing up phlegm for days though
Yep, both times I had sore throat and I didn't know why until some years later 🤣 now I know this thing was down there
I'm happy you know that now!
I don't remember a sore throat, but I do remember my throat closing up when I woke up. Don't know what that was about.
Hii question does sore throats give you fevers?
Thanks! alot of help you are. Now your going to us
Fine time to inform us😮😮
Holy crap that's huge!😨
What if you getting your tonsils out? Would you still have that in your mouth
Why is this being used any way?
Well jeepers... I've never had a sore throat after surgery. I feel a little embarrassed about that. 😂
Flex lol
For my last surgery I was intubated and my bottom lip was numb for 2 weeks, like I had gone to the Dentist and he overshot the Novocaine... lol. It was weird but I survived....
Jesus no wonder my throat was sore after my surgeries
How far does that go down your throat?
i actually did not have a sore throat after surgery.
Why would you not show how the balloon is deflated?
I have never had any kind of throat discomfort even after going through 4 surgery’s 😅
I sounded like a person who smoked 40 years.
Normally soprano, temporarily became a tenor.
No, i was just trying to sing high notes at practice and i end up with painful sore throat and vocals 😂
Yep & was irritated for a week
I'm sorry :( how was the rest of your recovery?
I remember waking up in the middle of my surgery choking on that.
I am terrified of this happening I have my first surgery Tuesday 😢I am so sorry that happened to u
@@victoriamurphy7031 you should be ok. I have had 5 surgeries in my life turned out fine.
Oh, That's why my girlfriend gets sore throats often.....
I would be more scared of that going in and me gagging a lot and mabye throwup then the surgery it’s self
Is this pain more pronounced in mouth breathers? Mine's been going strong for a week :(
I don't know about this one
Can/do surgeons do anytbing when theres a tube in throat/mouth but paitebts biting down whhile under? I had a surgery once and i woke up and my poor tongue!!!! Was in so much pain....
What could cause jaw pain. Husband had radical prostectomy now when he eats or drinks has jaw pain that has made him avoid food and drinks.?
I get ulcers due to my eds even from short surgeries so I always ask for ETT and I can literally tell you what side it was on by the way my lip feels with a sore starting before I come home. I've also gotten a ulcerated uvula 2x for longer (2hour surgeries) and it was white, and so long I was swallowing it each time I swallowed. So gross and weird. No pleasant
Oh no! that uvular trauma can be really uncomfortable. I'm sorry you had that
Why does it have to be so large?
No wonder I've had sore throat after surgery.
I don’t understand where that goes then the air, etc. ??
I have a question. I’ve had surgeries in the mid to low mid double digits. Why does my vision get blurry a day later
Never had a soar throat
I used to get sore throats...but not anymore..I contribute it the lmk....🥰
How u got rid from this problem?
can a tube go through your nose? and what does it look like? surgery planned for my throat but do you find the thought scary and is it safe?
sorry for the question. the doctors here are not very patient friendly to answer their questions.
Always remember, Google is your friend!! Yes, you can intubate someone nasally. It's a safe alternative. Have you met with someone from the anesthesia department yet? The doctors and CRNAs would be the best people to talk with. Your surgeon may not know the answers to your questions
Can I understand how urine catherers get in the urinary tract? Like I was so surprised at how thick it was. It scared me after it was taken out.
I wonder that , in the hospital for a week had two procedures few days apart and I wonder why is throat sore then the nurse gave me my dose of morphine or whatever it is they gave me for pain and passed out again
in recent surgery doctor recommended spinal tap because of my sleep apnia. he said it's very dangerous to post tu his inside my mouth
my god🤦♀️🤦♀️ so big..now i know after my sugery my throat pain..i dont have idea thats why i search it on google😮
I just had surgery with intubation. Is that what is used for everyone?
No, not everyone! There are different types of tubes
@@MedicalSecretsplease please tell me u don’t have to use these for every surgery I’d rather die I really need clarification
I felt it being removed one time upon waking from a surgery
So ridiculous. Who's stupid idea?
Worst part of General
Yea no shit. I woke up and asked for cough drops 😂😂
That red juicy report button looks amazing
Dude i had heary surgery in november and my throat felt so uncomfortabke for about a week
I had ACDF surgery. How did they move everything over with that thing?😮
After intubation, the ETT will be secured opposite of where the surgeon stands. Like our spine doc always stood on the patient's right side. He is right handed. When you're the assistant, you must always be mindful to not lean on the breathing tube! The ACDF means Anterior (front.) You can also do a posterior (back) approach. The patient is prone.
Oh how I hate this that is what caused my grandpa to die
My throat keep hurting I live in Oakland
Great info
Yes!
Why is that thing so damn big??????
Yes i slways have a sore throat after
Mine hurting now had surgery today
I spoke with a sexy husky voice for two months.
What happened if u have a thouart infection
If you don't mind me asking you if someone who can't open thier mouth wide enough because of the TMJ issues then how do you insert that pipe in there throat.
Sometimes the mouth opens up a little bit wider under anesthesia. Otherwise we use fiber optic bronchoscopes
@@MedicalSecrets well I am a little scared of going under anaesthesia and I am soon going to get a major jaw surgery done.
I don't like anyone messing with my mouth, especially when I'm unconscious. If I knew all this before surgery, I never would agree to it in the first place. I absolutely hate the words: surgery, intubation and anesthesia. 😒😒😨😨😣😣
Igels are great
Sir I'm talking medicine from last 5 days and my throat stings like hell ... Not even treated 10% ... Please help it is very painful
