I've read that things like little pieces of wood are good for potted plants to prevent soggy soil. The Kellogg Patio Plus has some, and that's one reason I like it, but I"m in a gardening zone where I use mostly drought-tolerant plants. I just watch how things do, and have picked out a few things to which I've added the diaper contents, and after a few days I'd say that's working.
Only 1 out of the few around me has the bricks. I did see a bag of coco coir at one location at either Home Depot or Lowe's for $6. I don't normally that there either. Thanks for watching!
@@vesgardens That's interesting! The guy in the gardening department acted like he'd never even heard of coco coir. Lol When I got home, I looked it up and saw it wasn't available online but available at a store that was 30ish miles away. Not too helpful for people who don't have cars. 😢 I'll just have to pay the higher price at Home Depot. I have succulents that I'm trying to create a better soil for. I love your awesome, down to earth (no pun intended) approach for gardening. Thank you!
Thank you! Try checking online to see if a Petco near you has the coco coir bricks. Some locations carry them! I actually have a video coming out about making a cactus and succulent mix with Dollar Tree potting soil!
@@vesgardens Good idea! I never thought of a pet store. Looking forward to seeing your cactus and succulent potting mix video. I haven't transferred my succulents to new pots, yet. I will probably be ready by the time you post the new video. 🙂 I'm going to transfer my new seedlings to little pots: some will be in 100% dollar tree soil and the others in a Miracle grow soil to see if there is a difference in growth (just for fun). I don't know how to do UA-cam videos, but I thought it would be a fun experiment.
That does sound like a fun experiment! I just put a new round of seedlings in the Dollar Tree soil. As I'm typing this, I just remembered I have a "better quality" soil too lol You should try recording a video documenting how things go. If you don't, please let me know! Sounds like an interesting experiment.
Gardenscape who distributes the product says the ingredients are peat humus, sphagnum peat moss, vermiculite, perlite, dolomitic limestone and other composted materials.
I don’t have any of the add ins. I repotted some of plants with this soil. It feels very sandy. Should I be worried and repot with a better soil or add these extras in?
It might be okay. If the plants are doing fine then no need to worry. How's the drainage? If you see it's not draining well and it's getting compacted I'd add perlite and compost.
Yes, if the potting soil mix from Dollar Tree is like the one I have. Other people have said their bags were different. I would suggest tl amend it with more perlite and compost.
I've actually used the Dollar Tree mix straight from the bag for a few houseplants and I wasn't a fan. So, if I were to use it again I would use coco coir as the base, mix in some perlite, and a little bit of a fine, sifted mix of the DT potting soil, maybe 1-2 spoonfuls. Depending on the plant I'd add a few chunkier pieces as well.
Hi Vesma, I recently bought potting soil from the Dollar Tree and left it outside for a few weeks (in the rain). I opened the bag to pot some plants and the soil was like a grey mud. Is this still good to use?
Hi! I would still use it, but I'd make that a separate project of turning that mud into fertile soil. I suggest mixing it with a lot of compost. If want or needed to use straight away, I'd mix with a lot of compost and use that mix to fill the bottom half of a container and fill the rest with better potting mix.

Thanks for the video. Haven't tried using Dollar Tree soil, but I'm going to now.
You're welcome! Let me know how your mix goes!
My Walmart, unfortunately, doesn't have those bricks. But great idea!

Can you use the potting soil on fruit and veggie plants
