Looks like you had some chipping and tear-out at the higher frets. Would you, if doing it again, run the radius before cutting the fret slots? Love your videos and your diy aesthetic. Regards
Great video. May I ask what your feeds, speeds and depth of cuts were for the .024" end mill that you used to cut the fret slots? I've already broken a few of these tiny bits.
This is going to be my next big purchase. Does it take a long time? The one guy who builds the blue firebird said it took him like 5hrs. I assume with such a small bit you have to take it slow and easy.

When writing toolpaths for you fretslots, do you ever have issues with MeshCAM not calculating all of your slots? I'm really struggling to get it to play nice with them.
+TheRealKingDong I use white Timbermate wood filler. After it dries, I sand it flush with the fretboard's radius and put a drop of water thin CA glue on it.
hi, my apology to ask you, is it possible to provide links to all the mills you use in this video and also for the body, I'm from Belgium and use the metric system and not so familiar with inches. thanks very much!!
I have an older 1000 X 1000. If you can design and build your own CNC machine, that's what I recommend. However, if that approach is beyond you skill set, I recommend the X-Carve for the hobbyist/small business.
@@HighlineGuitars I would sure love to have an STL file of a tele neck with truss rod and reinforcement channels.. you don’t happen to sell those do ya?? 🤞
You'll probably want to get a good 3D modeling program. There are a lot of them out there, so you'll want to demo them to see which works the best for you. I use Rhino 3D for the Mac.
@@HighlineGuitars I have a question, do the free Easel allow you to carver in 3D like to make the neck curve? Or do you need Rhino? Do you use Rhino because the free Easel limitations or just workflow? Thank you.
@@Lagoausente26 Easel is a 2D CAD/CAM solution. Rhino with MeshCAM is a 3D CAD/CAM solution. Easel can't do 3D contours at the moment. Eventually, it may. Until then, I like Rhino/MeshCAM.

I drew the fretboard to scale in Adobe Illustrator and exported it as an .svg file. The .svg was opened in Easel and set up to cut the fret slots and the marker dots. The perimeter shape and radius were modeled in Rhinoceros 3D and imported into MeshCam to get the g-code, which was sent to the CNC machine with Universal G-Code Sender.
Highline Guitars Ah OK, that was a very helpful answer. I've heard Rhino is better with organic curves and sweeps but I've never used it. I tried to model the neck in Solidworks.
Very nice video, show and tell, simple comments, and of course well edited. TY.
What brand and model of camera are you using to film your CNC?
When I made this video 7 years ago, I was using a Nikon D3300. Today I am using a Sony AX53.

No. It's not significant and can be erased with 400 grit sandpaper.
I should also mention that these days I use a down-cut bit wich eliminates chipping and tear out.

What a great video.
Can I ask how long did it take the machine to finish the back side of the neck?
The finish pass takes about 45 minutes.
When writing toolpaths for you fretslots, do you ever have issues with MeshCAM not calculating all of your slots? I'm really struggling to get it to play nice with them.
I don’t use MeshCAM for fret slots. I use Easel Pro.
are you happy with the X-carve results? Is rigidity an issue?
what kinds of feeds and speeds did u use? Very cool project btw!
Sweet video! Any more info on the white clay you use and how to seal it? Thanks!

I just ordered an xcarve and I'm computer illiterate. This is either gonna be really fun or really frustrating
If you haven't already, make sure you join the Inventables forum. It's an invaluable resource.
Have you tried the direct upload of the G-code into Easel yet?
+HiTone Guitars I have successfully imported g code into Easel, but I haven't cut a project with it yet.
This is cool good video....
great stuff could u share the file i use v-carve pro and also made my own machine never done a neck yet would love to try one

I keep seeing ads for the x carve. What one do you own currently? Do you recommend it? Thanks

Is it normal for the top work surface to have that many gouges in it? Or was that just due to getting the depth wrong?
That's why it's called a spoil board.
@@HighlineGuitars Makes sense. Really enjoying your videos. Keep up the good work!
does the xcarve tell you when to change the bit?
Yep. Actually, it's the software, Easel, that tells you.
@@HighlineGuitars I would sure love to have an STL file of a tele neck with truss rod and reinforcement channels.. you don’t happen to sell those do ya?? 🤞
any tips on someone about to buy a CNC machine for a building guitars?
The most important tip I can offer is to shop for rigidity. A CNC machine that lacks a stiff structure won't be good for much.
@@HighlineGuitars does the X-carve provide this?
Looks great!! any special software needed? looking at getting the xcarve and upgraded Vcarve pro software.

@@HighlineGuitars thank you, and what about Fusion360 should work ad 3D or can´t either?
Which do you use; 500mm 750mm or the 1000mm?
I used the 1000mm.
Was the fingerboard radius tool path done with Meshcam?
Yep.
Cheers
do you not need to deepen the fret slots? after radiusing etc. my fret slot bit only has a 2.5mm depth of cut max

Hi Do you make guitars necks from a pattern or drawing ? Regards
I create a full-size 3D CAD model which I import into a CAM program to generate my tool paths and g-code file.
Highline Guitars: do you sell this 3D file so perhaps someone like me could make a neck?
cool

How long did it take for each part of the CNCing?
I'm curious about this too.
+freiermann7 I didn't time it precisely, but in total, the neck and fretboard took about 3 hours.
+Highline Guitars thanks!
