It's so great to know that the remote they did about buying a "new car" for Sona wasn't staged, and Conan actually did rip up all those things in her car without replacing it. I respect that bit so much more now.
I had this feeling all of that was real🤣 just part of the package, she had to have known it was gonna happen. I’m sure he made up for it in the yrly bonus lol
I wondered the same thing about the "Conan helps Sona sell her car" remote. That bit of improv was hilarious. Because of the chemistry and frisson of the tension in Conan and Sona's relationship.
She is such a beautiful lady, inside and out, with such an endearing personality. Sona was the main reason I watched Conan's show. His other employee bits were good, but Sona's were always the greatest.
You oughta read what Gourley did before he met Conan. Dude got paid to use a guy's frequent flyer miles and work 30 minutes a day at Disneyland. Dude has never done what anyone would call "honest work" a day in his life. :)
Bruh, I always walked away from that segment thinking he eventually actually bought her a car. I can't believe he just trashed her car and said, "thanks for the content"
He's intimidated by Conan. Imagine not only meeting your comedy hero, but having him become your coworker and peer. And I don't think Gourley is faking his admiration for a comedy bit, because every once in a while, he'll reference a remote Conan did on Late Night, or some obscure joke he wrote on The Simpsons like thirty years ago. Matt Gourley is the audience surrogate, and that's why the dynamic works on the podcast.
Knowing that Sona didn’t give Conan approval to destroy her car makes me think about the clip (which I don’t think even made it to air) where Conan takes Jordan’s iPad and drills into it with like a hand drill, and it starts smoking. It’s when they’re planning the trip to Italy, but only in the deleted scenes.
I doubt it. They were talking on a podcast a long time ago about this. They talked about how people in the comments always assumed that Conan bought her an actual nice car behind the scenes, but that it wasn't true. And now, they are saying the same thing. Idk why they would go out of their way to deny such a nice gesture multiple times if it really happened (I know Conan is pretty humble but come on). As Sona said, Conan already gives her a lot regardless, so maybe that's enough.
@@bratprica6383 I would imagine that Conan gave her a nice bonus for doing the remote, but they don't talk about it in public because well it's no ones business but their own. By all accounts Conan treats and pays his people well, but he doesn't need to brag about it.
I don't actually think so, cause she's brought this up several times, if he had she wouldn't be (jokingly) complaining about it. But of course I'm sure she got compensated well for appearing on the segments, bonuses, etc. and now with the podcast, she is definitely making way more than she would strictly as Conan's assistant, so Conan has done a lot for her financially. But no, it's way funnier if he didn't get her a nice car after that segment.
"...you trashed my car..." goes flying through the California breeze... Damn, Conan. That was the funniest remote and sealed the deal for Sona being the COOLEST ever. And Conan, it's "stick-built" and it's a complement if you're an anti-mobile home snob.
Never heard of "stick built," that's cool, just googled it to understand it better. Funny how Conan probably inadvertently tried to remember it too but came up with matchstick lmao. Love your avatar.
lmao I watched that episode thinking "oh he broke the car because they're obviously going to give her a new car at the end" The fact that it's been 6 years and she still never got a new car is insane
Considering what a softboy lovefest all his other podcasts are I absolutely agree with Gourley that he had to learn this behavior from Conan. "With Gourley and Rust" is ostensibly a podcast about horror movies but listeners of the early episodes know it's really about making a new best friend. Kinda like how "Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend" is ostensibly about making new friends but is actually a horror show!
Come to think of it, i can see how his humor has matured with his work alongside PFT, Andy Daly & friends. And now with Conan as his Full Metal Jacket style "mentor", our boy is finally getting the chops to stand on his own :')

Conan found a home at the Simpsons. He was CRUSHING in his short time there and then thrust into the public eye. From the filthy writer's nest, where he was beloved by the rest of the staff and contributing to the most influential show of two generations (so far), to the centre of public eye where he was immediately criticized and berated and untrusted to handle the position he has obviously since proven to that he deserved outright. It's a wild ride. Sincerely, Definitely not a Conan bot.
I'm starting to feel like if I ever worked for Conan I would've been arrested for jumping him after he kicked my lunch in the garbage and spilled his coffee on my desk on purpose.
Is that just a thing that people do? Telling a younger sibling or cousin that there was another kid who used to be around and couldn't cut the mustard? Because for me it was my little cousin and his fictional brother, "Pete." When he was 5 and I was 10, I told him that his parents had another son named "Pete," and I had actually liked him, but Pete just wouldn't straighten up and he had to go. "Nuh uh!" he shouted, "There wasn't a Pete!" "Go ahead and ask around," I said. "Don't be surprised if people deny it. We don't like to talk about Pete too much. It's too sad."

Sona has the best job in show business: do nothing, get publicly belittled by your boss for it, and yet be beloved & thought adorable by everyone.
