  • Since Henry Cotton had won his third and last Open title in 1948 at Muirfield, the East Lothian course had seen Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino and Tom Watson claim the Claret Jug on its fabled links.
In 1987, Nick Faldo not only finally broke through to become a major winner, but he also secured the first of three Open titles that established the Englishman as the finest home player since Cotton.
But what was extraordinary about Faldo’s victory was the manner of it - with 18 pars on a final day when the course was shrouded in a misty haar.
Though it sounds singularly unexciting, there were moments of real drama, not least when he hit a superb 30-yard bunker shot to four feet at the eighth. Whenever he needed to save himself, he did. The same could not be said for the others.

Really enjoyed this. I still cant believe Azinger went 6,5 finish. the way he was playing all week. But thats golf and Pressure makes anybody do all sorts of things. Credit to Faldo who stuck at it all week in tough conditions, and that 4 to 5 foot putt he had on 18 for par had pressure on it. Muirfield is a gem of a golf course, and can be very very hard when that wind and weather comes in. I really wish the powers at be would get Muirfield back on the open rostar of courses. It to good a venue to not have it on. Also Turnberry. Its another brilliant venue for the open that is being left out. If the R+A are listning, please get at least one of these venues back on. I personally would like to see Muirfield as it is such a classic course. Anyway i enjoyed this 1987 open and well done to Nick Faldo for staying strong. Thankyou to the Open channel for putting this up.

Well played sir Nickfaldo you're a great winner. This was the period when USA golfers started to play poor golf against British Irish and European players in the Ryder cup. Paulazinger let it slip but he did win the USA golf major in 1993 he defeated another choker Greg Norman.

Not sure but maybe having the sound in mono would have been better than the announcer only in one speaker?

I’m sorry who won? Couldn’t hear anything over the synths. The most unpleasant open film ever. Rainy, windy and full of loud annoying synth sounds. Blech. I’m sure Sir Nick hates it too.

We can argue that the Open 87 and 92 and the Masters 89 and 96 were kind of handed to Faldo.
