Before lifting the wall You should toe nail the baseplate on your line. It holds the bottom of the wall while lifting so it doesn't slide off the edge.
When you're sheathing don't bother cutting the openings. Just go over top of them and router them out after.
Hey bro, looking good its all a learning experience, you can only get better and more confident. Not sure if you snapped lines for your floor layout before the walls but what we do before building the walls is we toe nail the bottom plate to the floor so it doesn't slide out when lifting it. Looking forward to the finish project Devon keep up the good work.
Dude that's actually such a good idea! Then I wouldn't have to set the braces on exterior either! Appreciate the help. Will 100% be using that on the next one!
I'm excited to hear what the keyboard contractors think about my framing skills 🤔 Thanks for following along guys! Let me know if you have any suggestions or fun things I could build in the Cedar Hollow. So far I'm planning on a barrel sauna, hot tub, steam shower, huge deck, in deck hammock and a few other secret things ;).
I never used a wall jack thing rocks
Hey! New to the channel, great videos! If you don’t mind me asking, what is the height of the short wall?
@@AdirondackHomestead I'm so sick of these people I hate my generation. I have no idea how they even make enough money to waste it on this type of crap.
I'm impressed that you did all of this by yourself! 😮 It takes real dedication to put all of this together solo. Nice to see it all start coming together!
labor is just so expensive out here that I almost have to do it solo. I love how it's looking so far, the 12' ceilings really make it feel so large inside.
can you give a few examples how much is it in your area? thanks
here in Germany electrician 30-40€/h~ are pretty average nowadays@@devonloerop
My question is about the Weight Load on the bolts at the base of the Anchors...
A lot of commercial airplane engines are held on by smaller fasteners.
I have a 10 acre property and I am excited about building a small house just like this. How exciting! Way to go my man!
Great journeys ahead ! That's on my list.
Next time you're tipping a large wall and want to ensure it doesn't tip over the edge, screw in several 2x4x8' studs to the outside rim joist as a backstop if the wall goes past vertical.
I'm impressed. I think you did pretty well for your first time. Laying out the wall in chalk makes it a bit easier. But you got it done.
A few tips. If you were worried about tipping too far, it probably would have been a good idea to run longer struts on the back side. Instead of a little 6 inch slip to stop it sliding, make it a full 8' long stud that is perfectly straight up. Then brace it back against a tree, ground screw or whatever. A few of those will "catch" the wall no problem.
Also, when you start jacking it and the 2x4s are bowing, you could have nailed some 2x4's into a T-shape for the portion that is under the jack. That would increase the bending strength of the 2x4 in that direction by 2x-3x.
Devon, you are incredible
Hi, great job and thanks for nice video. Did you use 2" X 6" studs (didn't see it mentioned anywhere but "header" looked 6"). Why did you elect to use 6" studs vs. 2" studs? Thank you.
You can toe nail the bottom plate to the baseline. That will keep the wall from slipping off the deck.
Leaving the bottom sheet off can help a lot if its breezy. It gives the wind somewhere to go.
Nicely done. What do you think about using all pressure treated wood for the foundation? Are you concerned about rot or termites?
How much more time does it take you since you're recording? Moving camera angles, stopping to talk about what you did/are doing? Just curious on your estimated added time.
Hey how do you calculate the length of each stud on the side walls? Theyre all different stepping down. Some sort of rise / run equation?
framing 12ft walls 400 sqft addition, build in multiple pieces
That first wall was sketchy. You did great. Awesome what someone is able to do with the help from UA-cam and a lot of dedication.
I cant believe youre doing this alone. I dont know shit about any of this but you got my attention.
Solo build. Fantastic. And First Timer. Bravo
Amazingly done, very inspirational!
Amazing work. Bravo! 👏👏👏👏
Hey great work! How high is the front wall and the back wall of your house? I'd like to know the difference in height. Thanks man
it's roughly 12'6" to 9'
How did you get financing without a permits?
The wall is fine except for the headers. I can’t believe you built the entire wall instead of sections. That’s some ambition.
No the wall is fine exepet for NOTHING
mad props man keep it up!
Bro always looks cracked out
Glad you made it out unharmed, brother. I'd never attempt this. I advise calling in some help next time.
Next time!
Great work Devon!
I’ve been watching your videos because I’ve got some acreage in Washington that I’ll be building on and was all cool until you showed those pictures of the helicopter in that serene location wherever it was. Dude that is seriously uncool to bring a heli into a place like that. I’d be so pissed if I’d hiked in and saw that thing land. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Resist the urge. Drones aren’t allowed in a lot of places like that and for good reason. That was a huge mistake and sets a terrible precedent.
Pro tip, be a stud and always use 2 jack studs minimum, putting a header on just 1 jack stud on each side isn’t very strong.
I suggest always going an extra pair more than required by code.
It really doesn’t add much to the build cost and you have a beefy build.
What are your outside dimensions for the house portion. I believe you said the length was about 28ft? Total sq ft excluding deck?
Looks great. Enjoying your videos and commentary.
I'm a little late. But a widow's peak is a 2nd or 3rd story balcony. A bird's beak or birds' mouth is the cut on your rafters. Too many nails in wood can actually weaken a joint. And last but not least why no sill plates? Otherwise, beautiful home dude .
would using 8x8 posts to the concrete pilar be stronger than 4x4?
Yeah! especially if you're building it higher but in my case there was no need.
Well as a carpenter, you had me freaked out. I'm glad it all worked out for sure. I have never seen a single 2x4 wall jack in my life and those things flexing just past mid lift were super sketchy. A post jack with a spindel connection at the floor dramatically improves the safety. You won't see that from me, I build solo, but in sections I can lift. I just don't like the heavy lifts anymore solo.
This would be the perfect home for me as a single guy :D
How much will this cost for you to build approx? I live in Germany, houses are expensive to build here too but maybe at your area its even more costly, also I'm not planning to move to a big city so it would cost less.
NEXT TIME MY BROTHER, BUILD IT IN SECTIONS. 8', 12' OR EVEN 14' SECTIONS IN THIS CASE SINCE ITS A 28 FOOT WALL. BY YOUR SELF JUST DO 8 FOOT SECTIONS.
Just getting around to watching this today and had to blurt out a big "fuuuuuuu**" on your behalf for the weather we've had in western Washington the last couple days... 😱 Hope you were at least able to get some tarps up. 🤞 the roof.
Awesome job framing. And all by yourself! Quite an accomplishment.
Well done!
Thanks!
The only problem is you’re videos are too good and I’m tired of waiting so long between each video!! Lol. Great content
Looking good! Was wondering what is anchoring down the structure to the foundation if the anchor bolts are just in a hole in the concrete pillars for adjustments?
love your vision. good progress so far. feels good building something solid hey. wish I could help ya with the drywall finishing. lol that was a great tip having backing in the corners! here for your journey
I will welcome any help with electrical/drywall that I can get. Those two scopes kinda terrify me 😅
we could crush the drywall together no problem. we should connect. are you doing drywall window returns? @@devonloerop

I love the stressful background instrumentals….nice touch.
amazing !! can't imagine what other cool stuffs you will be doing in the future.
amazing Devon!! i held my breath multiple times but had all the confidence in you!
I love following along with this build! What do you think is the best place to learn how to build a home from scratch? Would love to hear where you learned it too.
amazing work, and really well thought-out safety precautions. love that you took it slow and steady. i mean, if you got crushed you'd never get to see a return on these properties! can't wait to see the rest of the build
... Insulation? ....
I prefer stuck framing when doing walls it seem less risky
Anyone know what software can create those 3D layouts? Good work 🤙🏻
Wear hearing protection…
Hearing aids suck
Nice project! What size is this cabin of yours? I'm building something similar, but decided to go with red iron building. I'm curious to know your opinion on a metal building vs a traditional stick building.
Stick build is so much cheaper. But metal looks so goood
Really enjoyed watching these videos... impressive skill and energy to build these while documenting the whole thing at the same time.
I don't usually comment, but one thing I've noticed in the last few videos. You refer to the 'Cedar Hallow'... and I have a sneaking suspicion you're actually referencing the word 'Hollow'.
A hollow is "a low, wooded area, such as a copse"... while the word hallow mean " is to make holy or honor greatly".
I would usually mind my own business, but considering the time and effort you put into this build, I thought I'd mention it in case you'd accidentally used the wrong spelling.
Lol my girlfriend pointed that out to me yesterday too 😂 I'll be changing it in the next intro. I guess that explains why I have a mechanical engineering degree not a literature degree. Appreciate your feedback and keeping me in line
Hello man, Am from Kenya🇰🇪(Africa) and am looking for a job please,, can we link up I'll do anything man.
I don't have any money
Looking great!! Thank you for sharing, seeing the whole process helps a lot!
I know this can be different based on which country you want to build the house but for a cabin like that, can you get your plan approved and build it yourself without a structural engineer/architect who takes the responsability?
I spoke with my building inspector and he said anything under 400SF is good game. But you have to check out local codes for your area. I still have to build the structure to building code.
Big props to you man. I don’t usually subscribe but I had to once I made it to this point in the build. I’ve been working on a very similar cabin plan for two months and your videos are a good mix of explaining the techniques and seeing the action.
that's EXACTLY what i was going for with my edits/filming style. It would always drive me nuts watching people either be way too into the weeds or be too high level you can't figure out how to do it! Appreciate your comment.
Why did u give up containers?
Amazing Job! Those wall Jack's are incredible!
Right?!? So crazy that they are that strong
When working alone, you can build those long walls in pieces to be safe.
But i figured i'd rather sheath it on the ground in one piece than to climb the 15ft face with a 4x8 sheet while trying to level it and then nail it to the face all alone. Just trying to pick the less terrifying route
This is great! We plan on building our own on our property in Hawaii!
Awesome!! Best of luck with it!
You’re leaving out the jack studs. They go on the inside of the king studs and support the header. I would reconsider.
ehh not too worried the double studs on top and bottom plus the sheathing and windows holds everything tight. Thing that really matters is that the header is properly supported
@@devonloerop I’m not haten on you. You’re out there doing it, God bless.
You are doing a great job and your energy level and attention to detail is out of sight. Question: from what I can see on the video is there a reason you did not frame the windows and door headers out like your window framing sketch shown at 2'13" in the video?
I really like you're work. Well done 👏
Thanks so much!
@14:26 (drone angle) almost looks like the entire floor was rocking/shifting with the movement of the walls 😮
It looks like that was just the footage being stabilized because of the drone
@@christopherstepaniancorrect. I used a warp stabilizer otherwise everyone would get seasick trying to watch that clip with drone floating ariund
@@devonloerop you seem like you understand video production pretty well, but i'd highly recommend just using "position/scale/rotation" instead of "subspace warp" as the stabilization method, and check "preserve scale" so it doesn't take scale into consideration (i.e. the drone is not moving toward/away from the subject much at all). it mostly avoids that crazy warpy warbling footage. hopefully this helps any future drone timelapses!
Yer a clever young man… nice.
Hahah just doing my best with what I have!
what type of wood did you use? Is it natural wood, or is it treated?
Just untreated. It's covered in vapor barrier so it's all good to go
@@devonloerop Is that pine wood, Devon? Congratulations on your work!, you are an example to me 🙏
why repost
It actually wasn't supposed to go live yesterday. I had to fix a few little things on it. Hahah you got a sneak peak yesterday in the 10 mins it was up.

The devil felt so blessed once two, you believe in God , you do well so does the devil an he trembles. Read Ezekiel 18 and marry that girl now. No fornicating/ fornicators go to heaven. Satan deceive many people. Revelations 12 he was not kicked out for trying to be God but for “disorderly conduct “ he is a accuser “ accusing the angels before God day and night. Now why would God let us in after “intentionally/ deliberately “ going against His commands 🤷🏼♂️what did Jesus say in Mathew 5:17 👂 so we all know what to expect on judgement day; no one ☝️ will or can be surprised 🤷🏼♂️ failure to Ezekiel 18 proves we send our self to hell and not God sending us “pride” is a sin. Marriage ceremony can be done later. But a license signed but judge takes two to four days. Then God can really bless you. Drug lords an gangster rappers feel so blessed too.
