Ray, you mentioned a running sinker trace for live bait. what about a dead bait on the universal winter trace?

Since this is a running trace, with a live bait, would you hold the rod all the time or would you leave it on a rod stand? How would you know if you have a bit or if it's just your livey tugging on the line?
