Thank you for this. I’ve shadowboxed/shadow wrestled for 30 minutes per solo session for years instead of running. For a 48 year old, my cardio is great, and I outlast many of the much younger students I’ve taught. Dr. Israel (bodybuilder and BJJ brown belt) has talked about how it’s more intelligent to do sport-specific movements for your cardio than simply running, and Ramsey Dewey and other coaches have said the same. It just makes sense. Thanks again!

I came to your channel about 6 months after I got severely beat up. I did gymnastics all my life and was beat up as a 16 year old. Older athletes held me in a full nelson and took turns throwing hard punches on and off for over 30 minutes. I was scared shitless and felt totally vulnerable and helpless. Held in a full nelson shirtless with my whole torso wide open for targeting got my attention. Unfortunately I turn out to be very good at taking hard punches. I did NOT think about learning to fight. I only thought how to build up my abdominals to be rock hard. I'm age 22 now and did gymnastic for 14 years. After getting beat up I moved further from gymnastics and more into weightlifting for hypertrophy--especially legs. But I decided to check out channels on how to fight and your channel was hugely helpful. I think you encouraged me in emails or comments--you said I could build up my abs all I want to take punches but being kicked in the liver or kidneys is totally something else. Message received. I still get up training to take punches but I did not pretend that it would help me in a fight. Anyway seeing this video--that was my situation why I came to your channel.

Why dont learn how To fight at that Point? Sounds Like you are very physically capable so whats stopping you? After all offense is the best Form of defense

    • @anthonywilson1754
      @anthonywilson1754 4 місяці тому

@@DarkPages You are totally right about offense. Back then I wasn't thinking of fighting back. I was addicted to abdominal training from maybe age 6 or 7. I was more or less addicted to long difficult abs workouts. When I got beat up so badly I woke up something in me that gave me a different hunger. I know it sounds stupid now but I got very fascinated with how well I could take punches. I never had friends at school as my only friends were gymnasts but they lived hours away and saw them only at gymnastics academy. After I took punches so well I became popular with some school athletes. I really wanted friends at school and suddenly there were maybe 10 guys who invited me to hang out with them. I more or less used my body to keep them as friends. I got very good at taking hard punches and it just became a way for me to be unique. I tried wrestling and one of the coaches tried to get me to join the team. He did not know his wrestlers were throwing hard punches but watched me workout with his team. I was invited to go to the like and go hiking and camping. I loved having friends to do fun things with. Taking punches wasn't too hard usually. I'm more a gymnast at heart than a fighter maybe. But I did look into boxing at some point. But it didn't take a hold on me.

      Honestly you dont need to.
What helps me is to imagine an absolute tank keeps coming towards me no matter what i throw at him.
So i mainly focus on moving a lot, side steps, pendulum steps, ducking, weaving... then throwing some fast 2 punch combinations before moving away.
So dont worry too much about throwing them fancy combinations. Rather focus on NOT standing still. Always move. Always mix up your guard from high to cross guard to framing to throwing maybe 1 or 2 hands.
      Hope that helps a bit!!

Love Dennit's post. And the piggy back off of it: you technically don't have to throw ANY punches when you shadowbox.
First round can be just footwork, feints, and defense.
Second round can add on jab variations.
Third round can be just the lead arm punches (hooks, uppercuts; high and low)
Fourth round can add on the rear hand
      And so forth.

For anybody who wants to do 30 minutes of shadowboxing instead of 30 minutes of running, please consider the following. I like the theory and idea about controlling the heartbeat and aerobic intensity. And I like that you try to find alternative ways for training cardio. But the danger is that if applied wrong it can actually be a way of training yourself into having a predictable autopilot rythm.
Here is why: Despite variations in your punch and kick combos the rythm you throw combos in is constantly the same, which makes sense because 30 minutes is a lot of time to get into a rythm pattern. After a while your body synchronizes into a rythm and it will be difficult to change the frequency and accelerate, which is a detrimental part of boxing and martial arts in general. Anybody that runs for 30 minutes at a decent pace knows that after a while your rythm is so tight, that even if you had the energy to accelerate, it would really be difficult to do so. And even if you have enough energy to increase the frequency of your stride, it feels like your legs just dont want to, like having weights on your ancles and knees. In this case it is not fatigue, but actually the rythm being set by your body to conserve energy. After 10 minutes your nervous system, breath and heart rate have alligned to the point of it being difficult to change the rythm. This is your bodies version of cruise control. And I think that is actually dangererous to train in shadowboxing. A 30 minute run is good for cardio, because you dont get into a rythmic habit of fighting by running. You do get that when you shadowbox for 30 minutes.
Anyway some cardio is still better than no cardio training. so I suggest that if you decide to go for it still, to do this in interval and tempo switches. Maybe starting with only a handful of punches and resting while being on the move and having short bursts of 20 seconds increase in tempo and frequence once every 2 minutes. And the combos you throw have to always be in different rythms and different frequencies. So basicaly where one will be with more beats in between for punches for the instance 1--1-2 the other one has to be 112; hard, fast and snappy. Than trying to rest in between when you throw and move around. But overall, if you have the discipline to go running for 30 minutes or even jump rope for 30 minutes. I would do that over 30 minutes of shadow boxing, for the reasons I mentioned above. Anyway in order for this to be useful for cardio, you have to worry about soo many things besides just doing everything with good technique. Just go for a run, it is super relaxing.

I learned and teach what is called the "2 Minute " partner drill. One person holds the focus mitts and moves around , and the other punches for 2 minutes . Either the mitt holder or a 3rd person calls out even numbers from 2 to 10 at random every few seconds and thats how many punches have to be thrown. For the final 10 seconds you punch non-stop. It doesn't seem like it , but by 1:30 your heart is pounding . A few rounds of this is and you're getting in great cardio plus learning to relax and not gas . I just haven't figured out how to duplicate it solo.

You gotta check out my shadowboxing programs -- I'll help you to progressively build on strategies and combos, as to avoid just throwing at random: shop.fighttips.com

Shadow boxing is deceivingly tiring. I used to think shadow boxing was easy now i do it almost everyday and it brings me up 170bpm.

He posted a video about this. He had competed in boxing and muay thai before, for the reason to gain first hand experience and to learn to supplement his ultimate goal: to be a great coach. That's where his heart is. He doesn't want to be a fighter, that's all behind him now. He still trains, spar with world champion boxers, muay thai, and MMA fighters, for the same reason: to learn so that he has a lot more to teach.

Don't mean to be "that guy" but aerobic means "with oxygen." It's not limited to a time duration, if it makes you breath hard for a long time while you're doing it then it's probably aerobic.

Anything is better than nothing, more is better than less, but too much is too much. Listen to your body, but push your mental limits. 1-6 days a week.

we need knees to grounded opponenets in the UFC like in one. It would change the wrestling and ground game up so much, both with how people shoot and set up shots, but also when actually on the ground
also avg. heartrate of 180?! your watch gotta be off right?!
that's almost max heartrate for a 30-something year old dude like you!

Love shadow boxing, but for a guy with the mindset of always prepare to defend myself, I just wouldn't keep that hair style, no ear rings, no necklace either. Hair grabbing is a massive part that throw your daily training off the rail. Yes, you can have the idea and knowledge to how to deal with it, but long hair instantly put you in a big disadvantage no doubt.
