The performance is so much better than I expected having read the context in which this was performed. I guess his voice up to its normal glorious standards, but he's still fucking great regardless.
What the heck? I'm also a proficient singer and he is horribly bad. It's completely like he describes in the book. He's just pushing the tone and just even more fucking up his voice strings. It even hurts myself listening to it.
Revisiting this after reading Lanegan's memoir. This is much better than he remembers it. He does look exhausted by his self-created ordeal, but any performance shortcomings seem more in the mix than his vocal output. And damn, good hair day.
There’s a chapter in Lanegan’s new autobiography dedicated to this performance. Amazing they did this well considering how bad a day, physically and mood-wise, he was having. Thanks for posting this clip! Nice to have it as a reference while reading the book!
"Sing Backwards and Weep" brought me here also...Lanegan aspirated bile into his lung that morning after a smack nod...sounds surprisingly good for how he describes it in the book...
Just read his memoir. He played this show right after waking up from a heroin induced nap, only to realise he puked in his sleep and breathed in the vomit. His lungs were burning from the inside during the entire performance.
He was & will forever remain beautifully broken, much like the lot of us. His was a voice like no other, a member of an exalted group of musicians who wtragically doomed Princes of Seattle, land of gray skies set beside a cold dark sea, finished w/white capps!, where the gale force winds pushe9ir like an assault into all noses it cane across. These tragically beautiful young men, all of whom possessed a unique talent forever preserved in recordings, done in a multitude of options. Looking at Mark Lanegan in this clip, one never would have guessed his plight that could have easily crippled, and even kill him only moments before he appeared on( stage. He's not even 30 yrs old yet, his face still smooth, not yet deeply lined from living out the life laid out before you, should you choose it. He wore his long thick hair like Samson, the color of copper fire. Still a youth, this handsome young man with a voice that throws the first time listener, for its the voice of an ancient soul. His sound was mesmerizing & he was gifted with the very rare ability of improving as he aged!; instead of the other way around. He was at the peak of his career when his autobiography came out. I feel that knowing what we now, he presented us with a gift beyond measure, especially now that he's gone. Farewell, thankful for all you gave me. May he now enter the exalted place alongside Jimi Hendrix, Andrew Wood, Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley; Mike Starr. Sleep well, sweet tragic princes
I think Mark is too hard on himself regarding this performance having just read the chapter in his autobiography which covers this performance. Sitting in a green room for hours on end then walking in front of a camera with shit sound would be difficult enough without having your insides set alight.
pretty crazy how; if Mark's account is accurate and they were tasked to play Dollar Bill almost immediately before they went on, they were able to revise and shorten the song to the satisfaction of the shows producers. Shortened intro and shortened solo section.
Just read this chapter in Mark's book. Not a stellar performance, but I don't think it is nearly as bad as he thought it was. Still, such a great band. Rest in peace Mark.
Wow. After reading in Marks autobiography about what He was going thru at this moment, I couldn't tell at all. What a legend. RIP Lanegan. Your music got me thru so much.
If you haven’t read his memoir, get it on audiobook. Listening to it in Mark’s deadpan, rasping voice is an experience alright. He also did way better than he thought he did, and he got to meet James Garner. I’d chalk that up as a win. RIP.
i was at this one, friend had a in to this and i was going after work, got in a pretty bad car accident before work... that shit didnt stop me, it was awesome to see them that nite, sore back and all!!!!!!!!!
Mark is such a kool kat. Sleep in power Mark, you’ve gone home. We all get there eventually. Thanx 4 the stories the music and the nonchalant coolness you brought to the band and music in general.
lenegan's voice is the kind of voice i love. He is the best lead vocalist in the world. No. 1 grunge band in the world is screaming trees. Who have good ears to listen agrees.
It's been stuck in my head too. Aside from Mark, the band looked very intense. I only caught the last part of this song as it was playing on TV & I especially remember the drummer going gonzo. That was a talented band who deserved wider success, but as usual drugs ruined them & particularly Mark. I read his Wikipedia entry just b4 this; he clearly went thru a ton of bad stuff in his life. It's a wonder he made it this far. Glad this was posted here; unfortunately, I'm only discovering it after he's passed on.
I'd never got around to watching it after reading the book. I'm here now just deep diving cos, well, y'know ... Gonna have to go back and re-read and watch it again. RIP Mark.
I saw a clip of this performance on Instagram after Lanegan's death....RIP. After reading all the comments, I'm going to have to buy the book. I love rough, raspy screaming lead singers, I actually thought he sounded great. If anything was a little rusty, I would say the lead guitarist and the drummer was killing it. All in all, I thought it was a great performance.
One of the sad things about getting older that they don't tell you when you're young is seeing dead people. I see dead people. RIP Mark and Van. For those of you who are young, enjoy your living musicians, because someday they won't be.
I always got the impression that Mark is seething with barely contained rage while performing, turns out in this particular instance he really was according to his account of it in SBAW
I’m also here after hearing Mark Lanegan’s story about it. He still kills it in spite of the problem with his lungs. At the end of the day, music is about authenticity. He is absolutely 💯 to situation he’s in and brings that to the performance however difficult. Big respect and RIP.
I read the chapter behind this performance. I thought he was awesome 👌. I love screaming trees as much now as i did in the mid 90's. You left to soon Mark Lanegan!!!!! Come back !!!!!!! 😢
So there I was about to write and then thought I would check out the previous comments and see if anyone had written what I was about to write.Well I think up to this message you were checking all the comments too if anyone had written before them what they were also about to write and let me stop you there, yes,we are all here because we appreciate Mark lanegan as an awesome interesting talented human being he is.......and also because he was chocking on his own stomach acid after breathing it in.Mark you’re a legend 🤟🏻
Yep - just finished reading that section ! Ha ha / contrary to the ‘humiliation’ this was to Lanegan, ; this performance kicks ass. Ya his voice sounds a little shot but the whole thing is authentic and pure ass rock and roll. Just shows how neurotic and skewed the perception of addicts often is.; ie ‘ if it’s not perfect it’s crap’. I think 99% of bands today couldn’t summon that intensity. RIP.
Just read the chapter. I expected this to be a terrible performance. He sounds amazing actually. Lee’s 1 second solo is a nightmare though lol! Truly fascinating read. I highly recommend.
lanegan has a great voice, still cant understand though why this band had even this little success..really rehearsal quality playing here in regards with the guitar and bass, barrett's playing/dynamics is enormous, a liittle exaggerating for this song but just great for a thrash band...anyway, lanegans memoire brought me here too...heheh

Just read up to this performance in Mark's book. He describes how he was really suffering the day of this show and how humiliated he was with his performance. I think in the end he kicked ass and was being too hard on himself. They are my all time favorite of the Seattle bands!
mark lanegans story about choking on stomach acid bought me here
Me too
Me 3
Me 4
That sounds almost as painful as the fibre glass incident!
Mink 1973 me too
reading the story behind this performance in Lanegans new book. So good.
The performance is so much better than I expected having read the context in which this was performed. I guess his voice up to its normal glorious standards, but he's still fucking great regardless.
hey me too. had to come rewatch. i listening to him read the new book on audible!! killer
Me too!
Yeah same just finished the chapter! Can definitely understand why he said that he sucked. I love the trees and Mark, but heroin is shit..
What the heck? I'm also a proficient singer and he is horribly bad. It's completely like he describes in the book. He's just pushing the tone and just even more fucking up his voice strings. It even hurts myself listening to it.
This was the first performance I worked as their guitar tech.
Dude. That’s awesome. Can we get some backstage stories please?
Some stories would be cool for sure.
What was Lee's rig like during the Sweet Oblivion touring cycle?
So freaking cool
What was the dynamic like between Lee & Homme on the Dust era tours dude?
Literally just read the chapter myself. Considering how he describes it, it sounds much better than I would’ve guessed. The book is an amazing read.
I'm in the middle of his book now. Amazing, amazing look into the band and the man. Dark and beautiful
I guess when you're natural voice is just that cool breathing in stomach acid won't ruin it too much.
Agree! The book brought me here expecting a bigger disaster but he managed to get through the song pretty well.
Totally agree, it’s not terrible!😂 The book is awesome, he’s a natural story teller
Mark is a ledgend
Revisiting this after reading Lanegan's memoir. This is much better than he remembers it. He does look exhausted by his self-created ordeal, but any performance shortcomings seem more in the mix than his vocal output. And damn, good hair day.
Like the day you took that pic😉
Barrett Martin never got enough credit in discussions of great drummers. And he's got a great head of hair in this video!
Sean Moloney he’s one of my inspirations man. Especially the mad season gig he’s ace and under respected. Barrett Martin ✊🏽☝️
Barrett Martin * oops
He is a force. Miss him in a big band
Barrett rocks here & Mad Season😍
Drummers never get the credit deserved. Sean kinney of AIC was another great that doesn't get enough credit
Lanegan on his worst day is better than most people on their best. RIP
Doubt that.
No matter how wrecked and strung out the guy always brought his A game to the stage.
@@keehotee1357 no he didn't... plenty of evidence for that...
@joechabot2669 I concur...this sounds like total crap...people don't know what they like..they like what they know
RIP Mark Lanegan. Thank you very much for your voice and contribution to rock music. Very honored to still hear your music.
Legend comment.
There’s a chapter in Lanegan’s new autobiography dedicated to this performance. Amazing they did this well considering how bad a day, physically and mood-wise, he was having.
Thanks for posting this clip! Nice to have it as a reference while reading the book!
My pleasure! I'll have to keep an eye out for the book, once it is cool to browse shops again. Thanks for the note of appreciation :)
Same! Here right after listening to that chapter.

@@darnfloor I thought the same. Still sung mostly in key. Talented dude. The book is dark as hell lol
layne staley and mark lanegan are my favorite grunge singers
Just read his memoir. He played this show right after waking up from a heroin induced nap, only to realise he puked in his sleep and breathed in the vomit. His lungs were burning from the inside during the entire performance.
I think Lanegan did much better than he recalls in his book!

This is beyond the funk tragic😮
Finished chapter 14, came here. What a book, and really quite something to see these clips with the back stories fresh in your mind... RIP Mark.
One of my favorite bands. Very underrated. Nice to see the drummer play it live. @3:24-26 is glorious.
Mitt Obama Barrett Martin's a fantastic drummer.
RIP MARK LANEGAN underrated singer and song writer of our era
Not this dumb comment again. He's highly rated.
U got that right
I think Mark is too hard on himself regarding this performance having just read the chapter in his autobiography which covers this performance. Sitting in a green room for hours on end then walking in front of a camera with shit sound would be difficult enough without having your insides set alight.
No, he's absolutely honest about it. I can say this a proficient singer.
cmon, he can hardly sing here. amazing to see this while reading the book though...
@@ron2b2 agree. He's awesome but clearly his voice is abused here.
pretty crazy how; if Mark's account is accurate and they were tasked to play Dollar Bill almost immediately before they went on, they were able to revise and shorten the song to the satisfaction of the shows producers. Shortened intro and shortened solo section.
Based on Mark’s recall of the situation I thought this was gonna be much worse. The worst part about this thing is the mix.
Just read this chapter in Mark's book. Not a stellar performance, but I don't think it is nearly as bad as he thought it was. Still, such a great band. Rest in peace Mark.
Holy Shit ! I seen these dudes down in London UK back in 94 when I was stationed at RAF Upper Heyford. USAF. Thanks.
Bobby Garrett You're welcome. Happy to know you liked it, in spite of the audio not being so great. Thanks for dropping a note of appreciation.
Bobby Garrett I lived in Oxfordshire at upper Heyford! Miss that place
This sounds 100 times better than how he perceived it
Thank you Mark Lanegan for the great music and great times seeing Screaming Trees live. You will never be forgotten.

Look at the Olympia show from 97 and you’ll see just that

Still better than partnering with PJ "ringtones" Harvey. Chaotic audio was actually default and very much appreciated back then.
RIP Mark Lanegan. Another great musician gone too soon
Too soon. But produced a deep body of work that is the envy of discerning humans.
Based on this performance, one would never know he was loaded either, iirc. It was a good performance.
