      That’s almost what happened. I think he went to Seattle after Kyuss broke up to go back to college. While he was in town, he ended up joining the Trees for their tour.

      I read a interview where Josh said that after Kyuss he needed a break to just play with a band that he was friends with, and the Trees were right there, which sort of explains why he took a sideman role with them and never tried to become a real creative partner.

    Ice Cold European Funhouse is maybe the most harrowing, funny, desperate, accurate, life affirming, and best written pages about dope addiction put to paper. It really demonstrates how resilient our spirits can be, even when crawling through a gutter for a taste of death. Sing Backwards and Weep is the best read I've had in a really long time. I didn't want it to end. Being in High School during the Seattle years, I never got into the Trees - or knew much about Lanegan - but through reading his book, I've discovered an enormous amount of great music I never knew existed. To be able to convey so much emotion with a voice is not easy to do - and Mark is just a hypnotizing singer and performer. It's all in there.

      The audio book is awesome. It has extra impact hearing the tale told in his own voice. It’s what motivated me to search for a video of their German tv appearance and seeing now how awfully sick he looks really paints a full picture of the hell he was going through on that tour.

    • @jetcheneau5811
      @jetcheneau5811 Рік тому +6

      Before I read the book I always wondered why this performance was so...bad. I definitely saw that it was him at his sickest. Hearing him say what happened sent me into tears on more than one occasion. It's a miracle he didn't die over there. It's a shame, because the other Trees were on top of their game.

      @@Dwightpower88 Like everything in life, having money or friends with money makes everything easier. Lanegan couldn't afford to go to rehab, and the one Courtney Love paid to send him to is considered one of the best in the country. After he got out he was broke and owed taxes, and some guy in Texas gave him $50,000 to record some demos that weren't even released until 20 years later. And Duff Mckagan gave him a free place to live for several years.
      So yeah.....most addicts don't get that kind of help to get back on their feet. If Langean was just a normal guy he would have gone to jail for tax avoidance and then been homeless when he got out.

    Mark Lanegan dopesick, in dirty clothes, smoking crack day and night, shooting dope in an artery and had his lungs almost burnt, doesn’t sleep, rough life all around… the most perfect voice (and always looked somewhat handsome throughout his life). Me healthy lifestyle, drug & alcohol free, practising singing every day… can’t have a stable voice range to save my life lol. This man was truly gifted. Nowhere in the book he mentioned a vocal coach or some sort of vocal routine… Gift from the heaven. 🙌🏾
    Edit to add: He couldn’t even stay until the last notes at the end, we all knew what he couldn’t wait to do. It’s sad to see him in that state, but considering how he battled his addiction, it makes me happy to see that he lived a couple of decent years after.

    He was already a little dopesick right before this gig - and his tiny shot didn’t work wonders. But he still did a great job. Even with a tiny sickness, I don’t think I’d be able to go and tape a 30 min show… What happens afterwards is just crazy :) Loved that episode.
    About a year after reading the book, I went to Amsterdam again. I don’t know the 90’s Amsterdam, but comparing to his writing, I’m sure it changed a lot. There are no more dealers around that statue, and actually it is very difficult to find drugs on the street. Police patrol, and simply tourist scammers who sell hashish instead of junk. Or maybe I didn’t know the right place to go.
    But still, listening to his songs while walking those streets - meanwhile feeling a bit dopesick myself - kinda made me connect with him in a way. Dunno if that makes sense…
    You’re missed dearly Mike, may your soul rest in peace 🙏🏾

    Mark Lanegan estava numa fase crítica do abuso de drogas nesse período. Seu físico cadavérico deixa claro esse triste período da sua vida. Ainda bem que logo depois resolveu lutar contra o vício. E, melhor ainda, que o venceu!!!

    A dispetto di tutti gli aneddoti negativi su Lee Conner nelle memorie di Lanegan, il chitarrista mi sembra stiloso e con un gran groove.
