    He talks with current and former students, walks you through the rankings and institutional highlights, and shows you some of the spectacular things that the university has to offer.

    I'm studying at the Usyd currently and I have to say it's REALLY worth flying from 8000+km to this place!
    Perhaps the best choice I've ever made during my lifespan :) except I can only sleep for 4 hours for most of the time during the semester 😂
    I'll definitely be proud to be a student of USYD for life.

      I feel like both unis are at a similar level when it comes to physics, both in teaching and research.
      What to look at imo is their specialisations - are there particular areas of physics you’re interested in (eg quantum, or applied etc) and does one of those unis have a strength in a specialisation that interests you more (at least initially, as interests can change as you get further into a program).

    • @ChoosingYourUni

    • @johnwhite9220
      @johnwhite9220 4 роки тому

      A Life That Travels thanks for getting back to me so quickly! I guess all those things are quite important. Previously I’d say the prestige of the uni would have been the most important. That’s what motivated me to put in some effort to reach the cutoff. However, since looking into the uni (assessment style etc), it’s apparent that the teaching style is very theoretical, thus the majority of assessments are closed book exams. I prefer practical styles of teaching which is why I’m worried that I may not enjoy the course?
      Prior to this, I was studying law at MQ where the teaching style was more practical.
      I’ve heard UNSW is great (practical way of teaching + open book exams). However, I bombed the LAT 😪😂 so my application was not competitive enough for there.
      I live in Sydney so I’m leaning towards usyd or ANU. I Went up to Brisbane to look at st Lucia campus last week and as beautiful as it was, felt a little too far from home (watched your UQ video before heading up so thanks for that too).

    • @ChoosingYourUni
      @ChoosingYourUni  4 роки тому +1

      Sorry for the delay in replying - this got buried!
      It sounds to me like you're researching things in the right way. Remember that you can always start at one university (e.g. Sydney) and move to another partway through your degree (e.g. UNSW, if that's where you REALLY want to study).
      Any of USyd, UNSW, UQ and ANU are all excellent programs I'm sure with your thorough approach you'd make the most out of any of those.

      Hi,
      Thanks for getting back to me. I’ve kept up with your channel and aware of changes so no need to apologise. I ended up studying at usyd and I generally enjoy it. It’s got great academics and small classes. However, I see what you mean when you talk about the lower student satisfaction rate. I think the university needs to depart from its old-fashioned theoretical approach with emphasis on heavy, closed-book exams.
      I look forward to future updates in videos. :)

    • @ChoosingYourUni
      @ChoosingYourUni  4 роки тому +21

      You’re picking between “excellent” and “excellent”.
      Sometimes life smiles on us and gives us these kinds of choices.
      The reason it’s hard for you is because you’re standing at a fork in the road and can see two separate futures as possible.
      That’s hard because you don’t know which will be “better” than the other.
      But that’s life. You can never know.
      So pick one.
      Pick based on objective (rather than emotional) measures.
      Like which program offers the exact courses you’re interested in.
      Or which one offers more internships or extracurricular activities that interest you.
      Or if you prefer to study closer to the beach or closer to the city.
      Regardless of which one you choose, there will be ups and downs. Failures and successes.
      It’s more important what you do with THOSE than the exact path you choose.
      (But that’s another story).
      Good luck!

      It’s a solid degree and obviously a top ranking university. The only thing I’ve heard from international students in that discipline is that they’re surprised just how many international students there are in those business masters programs. That’s not a bad thing imo, there’s heaps of different perspectives and cultures which is great. But if you’re expecting to meet a lot of Aussies in class, you’re probably less likely to in that degree at that Uni.

      USYD is by far the more “prestigious” of the universities, however UC has been the “fastest moving” uni in Australia in global rankings for the past 2 years.
      I can’t comment on the courses themselves but would make the general observation that Sydney ans Canberra are very different cities. If you’re a “big city” person I’m not sure you’ll love Canberra. However if you’re looking for a more relaxed, outdoors place then Canberra has advantages over Sydney. Just a few things to consider!

      @ChoosingYourUni  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks for this. That’s the first time I’ve had a look at the Advanced Studies programs and I think this could be a great program for the right person.
      Uni is a great opportunity to try new things and to push your boundaries in a low-risk setting. I think this sort of program could be really useful if you’re not 100% sure of what you want to do in future, or if you’re genuinely curious about pushing yourself to be the best you can be.
      The program looks like a great opportunity to deepen your experience, academic knowledge or leadership skills in a range of areas.
      But it looks like something where you get out what you put in - if it’s just to do the minimum to “have” the title, I don’t think you’ll get the most out of it.
      My rule for life is: stay open, stay present. Take a positive attitude into something like this and you could have some cool opportunities come your way.

      @@5lovelygirl5 Ah! Very good questions!
      Both RMIT and MQ have strong business programs. What discipline in business are you looking at? Finance, accounting, marketing, business admin?
      For me, the reputation and academics are only one part of the university experience. After all, you're only studying part of the time!
      So what else is most important to you?
      Job outcomes? Fun uni life? Clubs? Overseas exchange opportunities?
      And what kind of place do you want to study in? Melbourne and Sydney are very different cities - tell me what you're interested in and I can give you my view.
      Sport? Leadership opportunities? Culture? Festivals? Work? Outdoors?

    • @5lovelygirl5
      @5lovelygirl5 5 років тому +2

      @@ChoosingYourUni A Life That Travels thank you for answering! To be frank, I'm still a bit unsure about which i should choose, finance and econ, accouting or just business admin.
      I like econ but i also want to include disciplines like accounting and finance (and maybe a bit of law). I do primarily focus on work and job outcomes, like will i be able to find a job after i get my degree.
      I'm also taking into consideration about the living cost...which is more expensive, Sydney or Melbourne? RMIT is in the middle of Melbourne so i might have to live far from there but MQ is more in the suburb so i believe it isn't as costly?
      And one more, the flexibility of the school's schedule. Will i be able to work part with the school's schedule and such?

    • @ChoosingYourUni
      @ChoosingYourUni  5 років тому

      It looks like what you're after is a flexible degree that has electives so you can choose from a range of subjects while you're narrowing down exactly what you want to specialise in.
      From what I understand, both RMIT and MQ have pretty flexible degrees (including the options of taking part of your class online), which would allow you to work at either uni.
      Yes, RMIT is in the middle of Melbourne, which has some advantages. Transport to get there is very easy, so you can pretty well live anywhere near a train line and get to the university without too much difficulty.
      MQ is more isolated - it does have a metro train line now, but because it isn't a central location you might have to change trains to get there. However, the whole area around Macquarie has really grown in the past 10 years. Enormously. There is HEAPS of accommodation, businesses, shops, etc. It is really a whole business district in itself now and is continuing to grow.
      Both Melbourne and Sydney are quite expensive cities, so I don't know if that will be the deciding factor for you.
      Outside of university, what are you interested in?

  • @christian491
    @christian491 5 років тому +3

    Hey man! I’ve watched your University reviews for awhile and I really appreciate the work you do. I had a quick question regarding University Ranking.. I attend a Go8 University studying Law/Commerce. Law is ranked within the top 30 in the world and Commerce is ranked in the top 35-ish. However, from doing more research I’ve realised that perhaps my current institution isn’t as prestigious as the other universities in Australia.
    Should this bother me at all?

    • @ChoosingYourUni
      @ChoosingYourUni  5 років тому +5

      No, this shouldn't bother you at all. Anything inside the top 100 in the world is awesome.
      Picture this: you're sitting at a job interview. After the first 2 minutes you've talked about the degree you've done (and, in fact, the interviewer already knows about your uni/degree because they read your CV).
      What are you going talk about next?
      Getting a great job...the job you actually WANT... is as much related to the stuff you do outside the classroom as what and where you studied.
      Maybe it's even more important.
      That's why doing things like student exchange, leadership programs, volunteering, joining clubs, working part time, travelling etc. are all so important while you're at uni. Focus on those things and a. you'll have a lot more fun at uni, and b. you'll have a much better story to tell when you're going for jobs.

      You're not alone man, the system is all about pumping out that information.
      The unis like making out that rankings are the be all and end all. Of course they do that - it's what gets them more students, grant money and prestige!
      Likewise, schools and careers counsellors want to get their students into the "best universities" because that's what THEY get judged on.
      The sooner you start ignoring all that the better.
      I heard an awesome quote today:
      "The meaning in life is to find your gift.
      The purpose in life is to give it away".
      Go make the most out of everything uni it has to offer. If you're in your twenties you've got tonnes of time to work it all out - years and years and years. At this stage in your life there's no such things as mistakes, just stuff that you learn that makes you better.

I am aware they're all top ranked universities and my goal is to get into management consulting preferably in the MBB post my master's. Any recommendations/tips for my application? • @ChoosingYourUni
      @ChoosingYourUni  4 місяці тому

      Those are 3 very highly ranked and reputable universities and programs. The difference to me is that management consulting at ANU will logically be more closely tied to Government (since all the consulting companies in Canberra do the bulk of their work with government), whereas it's probably more diverse in Sydney and Melbourne.
      The job market has shifted in the past few months - the government has been working to reduce inflation, essentially by slowing demand in the economy. That's starting to flow through to businesses, particularly consumer businesses. There has also been a tightening of student visa issuances (although that does not seem to have affected the group of 8 unis yet).
      Overall the level of education in Australia is excellent, but the work/post-study work visa side of things is tightening.

    Does graduate employability really matter? If so to what extent? Does employers look at employability of unis?

    • @ChoosingYourUni
      @ChoosingYourUni  4 роки тому +2

      I think graduate employability is a complex issue.
      Employment is some areas is very much about the degree - highly technical areas or very niche areas.
      But so often, getting the job you really want is much more about YOU and the things you've done outside the classroom - the experiences you've had, things you've been involved in, soft skills you've gained etc.
      So yes, employers definitely look at this but it is not the be all and end all.

      Yeah, it's pretty awesome. Are you thinking of doing a semester abroad or a degree?
      Lots of Americans also choose UNSW as it is closer to the beach :)

    Not a friendly place to be. As a former international student from a reputable university in my home country, Usyd was a let down. I felt like just another number. I will choose small class sizes and quality instruction over “prestige” next time.

      You're not the first person I've seen who's had that feedback.
      It is a HUGE university so it is definitely easy to get lost there - for some people "prestige" is everything, for others it's the quality of the interaction. Bond and Notre Dame have the smallest class sizes, and regional universities often have closer personal connections between teachers and students.

      It’s a large university so you’ll need to be more independent there than at smaller unis, eg. A regional university
