  • Welcoming our latest LOTUS Artist - Kris Johnson!
Kris is an award-winning trumpeter, composer, and educator based in the Detroit metro area.
He’s been playing in and arranging for the renowned Count Basie Orchestra; directing the University of Utah Jazz Studies program; composing several musicals, including "Jim Crow's Tears" and "Hastings Street: The Musical"; scoring films, such as the Emmy-nominated web series "King Ester"
I called up LOTUS Artist Derrick Gardner from Derrick Gardner & The Jazz Prophets and asked him what he has to say about Kris. Here are his words:
“Kris is an amazing, very inventive jazz soloist. And a masterful composer and arranger! He is a constant professional, a team player, and GREATLY enhances any musical situation that he is put in.”
Kris recently received his new Universal MAX model and he made this stunning unboxing and review video upon receiving it. Thanks a lot for that!

Warmly welcome to the LOTUS family Kris!
We hope you’ll continue to enjoy your horn and mouthpieces for a long time to come.

Awesome, awesome, awesome! My favourite sound would be the bronze tuning slide with the heavy top caps (#2 set up of each cycle demonstrated). Of course, hearing everything real life would give a final concensous. I just can't get over all the gear that came with it for potential swap outs! I presume the additions to the order can be maximized.
    Lovely horn, unreal talent.
One day I will get something beyond my Bach 37 Strad. ... big bell will be a must!!

The combo you picked was my second choice. First choice was brass slide with heavy caps and the 3rd valve heavy bottom. You sounded incredibly stable and slotted on that combo. All heavy (caps and bottom) with bronze was overkill. I also like the brass with the lightweight. Really livened up the sound. Can see how that would work for a more commercial sound with a slightly shallower mouthpiece. Anyways, great video. Congrats on the new horn.

The brass slide had a little sharper tone? the bronze one seemed a little better at keeping tuning consistent across registers.

Awesome sound all around but I agree with your preferred setup. Why not the universal over solo max?

You have a nice jazzy sound. Loved a few of your warm ups. I don't know if you play professionally but that mouth piece is not for you unless you trying to tell a story. I had success with playing a Bach 1-1/2C. Bigger the better for me. Please continue to play and grow with your new trumpet. I will definitely attempt to play a few of your awesome warm-up selections. Peace brother and cheers.

The LOTUS 1L = Bach 1 1/4C. LOTUS 1L2 = Bach 1 1/2C. Here is a link to his bio info: www.krisjohnsonmusic.com/about ....and yes, he plays professionally;)
