Band member Martin Gore has said he prefers listeners to interpret their own meaning for the band's songs -- however circa the time this song was released, he revealed it was written about the difficulty his children must have encountered in dealing with his divorce from their mother.
For the 10-2-13 concert -- large video backdrops displayed imagery of dogs throughout to the song -- seemingly portrayed as a very thoughtful message and statement about the welfare for dogs i.e. all animals.
