    8 min video for a mod and explanation that could’ve been done and over in 90 seconds

      Over 5,600 people have viewed this video to date and seemingly appreciated the context for WHY this is an important mod. You are the first and only to complain about something that could literally save your life. Thanks for your input, though! 🙂

    years ago i bought my first motor boat , a mark twain v bottom boat with 100hp merc. i waited all winter until finally spring arrived. i never owned a boat before. the drain plug was missing so i made a homemade one. my homemade plug was inside my glove comp. in my truck. in my excitment i launched the boat in the big lake. after a few minutes the boat started leaning to the left. i asked a guy near bye if that is normal , lol! he said no! then it hit me! i forgot to put in the drain plug!

    Ugh glad I’m not the only one. Forgot to put my drain plug in a few weeks ago and was out for 6 hours. Felt really weird and noticed what was happening but I was in the middle of a big bay, finally made it back to the landing..touched the dock and the whole thing went under until I quickly hopped off. Had I not hooked into a snapping turtle prior and cut my line and left right away I’d be sunk in the middle

      Good lord, that's frightening! This mod is to simply make it impossible to miss if it is out. Hopefully it helps a few people not experience what you and I experienced. Also, that thing is freaking heavy when it's full of water, eh?

    Gold Jerry...Gold!!! Happened to me on the river last year. Fortunately, there happened to be a ramp about the time I discovered my problem so I was able to get it emptied (both gear and water) and then went on my merry way. My boat happened to lean to the left which told me there was water in there. Will definitely be making the mod of which you speak. I have a trolling motor as well; have you considered getting a tiller extension? Makes a big difference. Tight lines there Barry.

    • @BarryP
      @BarryP  Рік тому

      Thanks for joining our little crew, Paul!
      That was an extraordinarily stupid plug design and placement on the Outlaw. They have another yak (the Showdown) that is the same design as the Outlaw, with the addition of a pedal drive for an extra whopping $1320!!!! They didn't change the plug location on that yak, knowing full well that this is an issue.
      As for a tiller extension, I don't really find it necessary. The Newport Vessels Kayak Series extends out about 8-10" and is plenty for me to reach back to it. The only thing I feel the yak could currently use is to take the time to mod the transom for an up/down pulley, but the Outlaw is going away. I'll be putting it up for sale in the next couple of weeks to make room for the next project!

    • @BarryP
      @BarryP  Рік тому

      It's that a terrible place to put the plug? The amazing thing is, Perception has known this to be a major complaint, but didn't change it when they produced the Showdown 11.5 (an Outlaw with a pedal drive and rudder for an extra whopping $1,320!!!). This is the solution, brother! It's impossible to lose the plug and you absolutely KNOW when it's not in.

      @@BarryP it’s not a great spot but everytime mines been out it’s been my fault. Left it out after draining water, my front hatch tends to leak a little if it fills up with rain water

      @@j.lawsonoutdoors5659 Hopefully this idea fully removes the simple observation factor. We are often putting-in in dark conditions, and the leash certainly makes an unplugged plug a LOT more obvious. Where are you located, J?

    • @BarryP
      @BarryP  2 роки тому +2

      The plug is a screw type, and won't come out on it's own. Getting into this situation would be 100% self-inflicted. As stated in the vid, I'm an idiot. The more visual cues for me, the better.

    Thanks for reminding me that the drain plug is most definitely in a bad spot. I've not had any troubles yet luckily ,but when I bought it and got it home I was thinking I better keep an eye out on it. I'm thinking about velcroing about 20 water bottles inside the kayak in case I ever do get a leak. It wouldn't add much weight really.

    • @BarryP
      @BarryP  2 роки тому +1

      It's funny. My initial impression was that I thought it was really intuitive that you didn't have to flip the kayak all the way over to drain any water. All it took was one time not noticing that it wasn't screwed in to cause a near catastrophe. If I'd not had the motor on, I probably would not have made it back to the bank without swimming! It really is a dumb place for it.

    Very humbling experience I'm sure, could of been a lot worse, glad it worked out for you brother. Buddy of mine just lost almost all his gear on his hobie on the Ohio river for same thing last night. Got me out tying a string on my plug now lol.

    • @BarryP
      @BarryP  2 роки тому +2

      That sounds terrible! If I'd been without the trolling motor, I may have been in the same boat (forgive the pun). I had to stay super balanced to reach back to it, and I'm not sure I would have made it, if paddling even the short distance. That thing got heavy and tippy pretty quickly. I'm glad you got something out of this. I find it better to learn from others' terrible experiences, than to have to deal with them, myself.

      @@BarryP a bad experience (such as this) is easy to learn from even with half a brain. As a kid my dad almost lost his brand new boat after forgetting the plug, but we noticed in the nick of time and barely made it back to the ramp. Ever since then I will never forget the plug no matter how small the vessel or "inconvenient" it may be

      For the record, my channel was not-yet monetized when this video launched. This is more about context and solution. Because the context is; "If you screw this up, it can literally kill you. Here's the solution."
      You have to understand the why, before the how. That's how people learn. I'm sorry that I wasted your time.
