How to Read Dodge Truck Check Engine Codes Without a Scan Tool
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 вер 2024
- In this video, I quickly demonstrate how to view a Dodge truck OBDII code related to a check engine light without having a scan tool. The code will flash up on the odometer display and can then be looked up in an OBDII database to determine what caused the check engine light to illuminate.
I am not a professional mechanic, and my videos are not intended to offer professional advice. Always reference your vehicle's service manual for official information, and please do not attempt any repair that you are not comfortable doing.

Thanks for the video! Worked perfectly in our 2008 Ram 1500 Hemi, and saved us a lot of headache. Note, don't do it too slowly, be quick on the on-off-on-off-on. That caused us issues at first.
What happens if no code pops up after turning the key three times?
your ok probably
I just read a forum where so called experts say this doesn't work. It does though...but on my Durango, I have to hold the tripometer reset, button down too. It works!
Thank you. You just saved me a trip to the auto parts store to get the code checked, or even worse buying a code reader.
You're welcome, John - I'm glad you found this helpful! Thanks for watching.
FYI the Accessory position is turning the key backwards. For this to work you must turn it forward to the on position.
I'm still having issues on getting the code for my '99. My check engine light looks different too, so maybe I'm doing something wrong or my truck can't show any codes?
Nop my 99 doesn't throw any codes ether
right on... my cousin barrowed my code reader and got it impounded with his car of course... tomarrow i have to do some work on my buddys 03 durango... you may have saved the job for me... cool trick cant belive dodge incorporated that into their system like that... thanks again i'll crack a cold one for you tomarrow :)
Haha, nice. Loaning out tools is a good deed that never seems to go unpunished, right? Were you able to retrieve the codes on your friend's Durango with this key sequence?
Thanks for watching!
Hi Matt! Just tried your trick on my '03 Ram 1500 way over here in Eastern Europe. Found the codes (both EVAP related, too). You just saved me a real headache, time and money by not having to go to the shop now to find out the problem. Thanks, man! If I was States-side I'd buy you a beer! Cheers
Jim Haas That's great, Jim! Good work, and I'm really glad this was helpful. Not sure which evap codes you have, but you can check out my video on repairing my own evap problem if you haven't already done so. It might get you on the right track if nothing else.
Good luck, and thanks for watching!
Accessory position is counter clockwise, your using what we call ignition on engine off position,,,, "to the clockwise position". If you use accessory position, the procedure your describing will not work. Accessory position, "counterclockwise", is for listening to radio, without powering up the PCM or the PDC.
I'm trying this with a 1998 Dodge Dakota 2.5 l, and it doesn't seem to be working, do you know if it does by chance, work for this vehicle.?
Works on my 2003 Dakota SLT!!! Thanks for sharing this trick man, much appreciated
i Have NOT got it to Work on My 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins turbo diesel.
Does any Body know How to Read & clear codes on My Truck ?
or Link to a video ?
Thanks.
Do other manufactures do this? I’ve know about the dodge for quite a while. I’ve done almost every bit of mechanic work on my vehicles using that trick, asking questions, and watching UA-cam. I’ve never had an issue. “Knock on wood” I’ve succeeded in correcting every issue I’ve ever had in every vehicle from a $200.00 dollar ‘85’ Plymouth Reliant Wagon, to a 2002 Minivan, to two $8,000-$10,000 2006 and 2007 Ram 1500’s back down to a 1991 Dodge Shadow, with a couple 80’s lebarons, and a few pt cruisers and a 2003 dodge neon sxt in there somewhere. Hell the neon with just the trick with the key... replaced crank and camshaft sensors and the magnet for the camshaft sensor, timing belt, tensioner, and water pump, headgasket, plug tubes and gasket rings. Passenger control
Arm and half shaft, cat converter and I think 2 o2 sensors. All cost less than $350 for parts and about 8 hrs of my own time. I think lowest quote for the whole nine was 2640. Oh yeah... that’s brakes also just in the front. Cost less that 200 bucks and less than and from a 197 (2) or (8)Lincoln Continental Towncar (yes I said that right... they certainly made them) to a 2007 Chevy Cobalt SSSC. Every vehicle had every time outlasted itself tenfold. Then there’s lil beaters like the 95 ranger, 400,000 miles on it. 95 crown Vic. So on and so on. Anyways can’t find out how to get codes for anything except dodge.
Honestly, I'm not specifically aware of any other manufacturers that incorporate this procedure, but I haven't really checked into it, either. I do know that it is super helpful. And that is a super impressive list of repairs that you've done yourself! Nice job, and keep up the good work. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this very handy tip.
Awesome! Worked for my 2000 Dodge Ram Van 1500 5.9L Gas. Thanks Matt!
Thank you going to try on my truck after work
Thanks for sharing! Just used on my trusty ‘01 Ram 1500.
Worked on a 07 Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi
Cliff Demczuk Good to hear! Thanks for watching.
Good to know… I do have a Code Reader but it’s not always with me in the truck (Dodge Ram 2500). Thank you
Hey man nice video but it didn’t work on my 1999 dodge 1500 I’ve watch another video about a 1998 dodge 1500 and it didn’t work so how do you check it for my 1999 dodge 1500?
Yes! Thanks dude... record those codes w/ cel phone and play back w/ pause
😍 MADE MY DAY, SAVED ME A TRIP TO TOWN, THANK YOU
Hey Matt, was wondering if you could point me in the right direction to figure out why the scan tool hook up isnt working on our 2001 dodge ram 1500
Mines doing same thing won’t hit over 50
My son has a 2003 Dodge truck with the 5.7L V8. It shows engine code P0016 and P0128. It starts fine, idels really rough. It will shut off during a rough idle. It runs very smoothly from 1500/200 rpm's on, however....
I have a 1997 5.2L but the odometer is not digital, where I see the codes?
this also work for my Dodge 2005 Ram 5.7 Hemi, the w\question is what is a "C-code???
It takes quite a few times while holding in the reset button, while turning the ignition key four to fives times. Otherwise you should check your gauges.
Awesome, light came on in my work truck and just got the code. Thank you!
I got the same code, '02 Rango. What did you do to fix it? I've heard anything from the gas cap to the purge canister by the battery.
Didn’t work on my 98 1500 4x4. BUT I have an lcd display. Maybe that is why..
I just tried his method, but I had to put my key in the start position on the 3rd try for the code. Not back into the accessory position. I tried that nothing happened
Worked on my 2002 Durango. Thank you so much!
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Thank you my obd dont work so it helped me 2021 still works
We have a 97 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport. It doesn't have the digital odometer. Is there a way of checking why our check engine light is on?
Go to Any Auto Parts Chain store --- They Read codes for free.
i Just went By O'reillys auto parts.
They Hooked up thier code reader to it & i used my Phone to take a Picture of the 3 codes that came up. it was very cool. 😁 They can sell u the parts for repair that way. but be cautious thier replacement part was 200$ i just looked on internet. i can get it 60$ + 8$ shipping. allways shop around for your parts.
or
Buy Your own code reader from the internet. Bluedriver is recommended by scotty kilmer channel on youtube here.
Worked on my 2001 dodge durango RT thank you!!
My issue is car died, no spark no gas and previous owner cut out the OBD port so I cant scan it. I tried like you said with the key but nothing at all happens. Does this work for a 99 dodge durango?
Will this work if i have a no bus code?
Good Video. ill try it tomorrow. ive got a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 cummins turbo diesel. ill see tomorrow. Thanks for making this video.
Cool! That is a very desirable truck that you have!
Thanks for watching!
I never got that to work. I have a 99 ram 1500
It won't work on Dodge Ram. Use an OBD2 scanner to read and clear codes via the port under the dashboard. There is a step by step guide on YOUCANIC on how to Troubleshoot Dodge Check Engine light.
Doesn’t work on anything pre 2000 it’s sad my 02 did it but my 99 doesn’t
Unfortunately this doesn't work for my 98 dodge ram 1500
It worked on my 09 dodge ram 2500 5.7 hemi but now it doesn't after i wanted to show my boss, it just comes up blank and then -done- even though my cel is still on
Worked on my 2017. Thank you sir.
Holy Shit... It worked!! Thank you so much 👍
2006 Ram 1500 Mega Cab.
Thanks very grateful to u sir
Thanks for the info, I'm gonna try it
Another awesome tip!! Thanks!!
It doesn’t show that simple in my manual
Would that work on a 1999 Cummins diesel 2500
Thank you for sharing, I have the same vehicle and Thai method will help me.
I tired I don't know how many times and I can't this to work. I call shenanigans
finally your a life saver
+Justin Ball I'm glad you found this helpful, Justin! Thanks for watching.
I'm hoping this works on my 98 cummins. I'm trying to see if it tells me sos thing about my trucks trans slipping.
Josue Isaac Perez Thanks for watching...any luck?
Thank you
Works for a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500! Thanks!
Jibey Asthappan Cool, glad to help!
Wow man that's cool. Wonder if itll work on a 17 model
Do you do it back wards? or to the on position right before you start the truck?
Richard Cowtails Richard, you start with the key in the "Off" position, then turn it to the "Accessories on" position, then back to the "off" position. Then you repeat that process once. Then, on the third time, turn the key from "Off" to the "Accessories on" position and leave it there, and any engine codes present should flash in the odometer. You have to do this process fairly quickly; if you don't turn the key quickly enough, the codes will not flash.
I'll have to try that.
What about if it says p done ??
How do you erase the codes??
mine works after 4 times with the on off thing.
Yo dude, thank you so much!!
Awesome!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
doesn't work on my 99 ram either
Fuck man my 99 wont do It either
Tried it on my 2000 ram 1500 5.2 L, and nothing happened? Could it be the Mapping system?
Try going to ON rather than ACCESSORY.
Anybody got a link to that OBD2 database
Doesn't work on the 98 1500 either. Neither does the trip hold trick
What trip hold trick ??
will it work on a chevy?
Kayla, I honestly have no idea, but I very seriously doubt it. There may be a trick to doing this on a Chevy, but odds are that it's a different procedure. I've never owned a Chevy, so I really can't shed any light on that. Sorry.
Can’t seem to get it to work on my truck 99 318 1500
How do you reconcile the code
It looks like a funnel sticking out
Works on my 03 Ram 1500 and on my granddad's 13 Avenger, though in both cases I had to go to ON rather than ACCESSORY.
Worked 2001 ram 1500 5.9 had a p0455
Wow, It gave me flash on a 2014 Ram too.
+Tim Creemer Cool! It should work on pretty much all years from what I've heard, although I've heard the key sequence might be different on some other years.
WOW!!!Thanks for sharing!.....
Did not work on my 08
YOU DA MAN!!!! WHO DA MAN? YOU DA MAN!!!
Aw shucks, thanks Michael!!
mine dnt do it..i got 01 2500 cummins
how do i find out what the codes mean i got 123255 on my 95 dodge ram 6 clyinder
+Josh Barnard Josh, 1995 and earlier vehicles operate with the OBDI system, which is slightly different. I am honestly not all that familiar with those codes, but I believe you have three separate codes being displayed: 12, 32, and 55. Check out this post - I believe it should tell you exactly what codes you are seeing:
dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen-dakota/182034-obd-1-codes.html
Good luck, and thanks for watching!
thanks it worked don my 2002 dodge dakota
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Now to find out what ten flashes mean
+Tim Creemer Hmm...I'm not sure about that.
DID U EVER FIND OUT WHAT THE 10 FLASHES WERE ? AND HOW DID U
there are no flashes to count...it literally will say P-xxx in where the odometer reading is and continue to list each code thereafter until it says P-done.
Doesn't work on my 98 ram
Thanks
Nope!! Didn’t work on my 04 Ram 2500 5.7
wow thank you so much!!!
+John Johnson You're welcome, John!
hey on my 98 dodge ram this doesn't work but on my 2000 dodge ram it does. what's the difference? lol
+Tyler Shemberger Really? That's interesting. I guess maybe that key sequence wasn't programmed into the PCM until after 1998...
Yes sir. It it only works on my 2000 model.
Wow. Handy trick lol
Didn't work on my '98 dodge, tried it four times
Me and my husband just did it and no it does not pop up the numbers but if u count how many times it blinks but there will be a pause within those numbers but count them and keep track of them, it does work it just doesnt pop up the number but it does tell u with blinks and pauses
Didn't tell me anything. I went from off to run (3X) and the check engine light went off though! ☺️
+16fulani1980 Hmm....by "run" do you mean you started the engine briefly each time? Or, you just turned the key to "accessories on", but didn't start the engine? That's interesting that the check engine light went off. Perhaps it was something simple like a loose gas cap.
+Matt Payne I initiated starting but didn't crank it. Probably was something simple like my gas cap. The truck is a 2015.
Same result for me
So disappointed. This did not work on a 2003.
I didn't see any codes in your video.
Ron, pay attention at 0:59 and you will see the code "P0455" flash on the odometer.
ua-cam.com/video/2QM3_KsNjOM/v-deo.html
Thanks Matt!
But that doesn't fix the problem!
That will fix the problem to pass emission test? Finding the code Will pass emission test or not.
No, this does NOT resolve any issue that is causing a code to be displayed. This only tells you what the code is so that you can narrow the focus your troubleshooting. Simply knowing the code will not allow you to pass an emissions test, and neither will manually clearing an emissions-related code. Clearing a code without resolving the issue will only cause the code to disappear temporarily - the issue that caused the code to display will still exist, and the code will reappear after several drive cycles. If you are subject to emissions testing, you will need to actually repair any defective engine parts/system before you will be able to pass an emissions test that samples exhaust gases.
The main part I am confused about maybe I’m not the brightest today… lol but how the fuck do ya figure out flashes into the codes😂 thats sucker ain’t flashing 27 times I know that lol
Ya 1999 doesn’t work
Josh Huff same on my 99
Hey anybody out there on a Dodge Ram 2000 sport 5.9 motor Nordic old Nobu 5 memes please call me back let me know...
Thank you
