- Schuyler Quentel...it's surprised me in so many ways. What's your opinion on this bible? And what are some editions that have surprised you, personally? Let me know in the comments!

#1. I can't afford premium Bibles. #2. I need large print (at least 12 point), double column text. #3. I will do everything possible to avoid the paragraph format. Verse by verse has always been my preference. #4. I am also a fan of the red letter text in the NT. #5. I am an avid highlighter and underliner, so I try to find 38 gsm paper, though that is becoming more difficult these days. #6. If it's a reference Bible, I will always look for center column references. Yes, I'm a picky old woman on a limited budget so I have had to get creative with the supplies I use for marking within all of my Bibles, but these days there are a few companies that now focus on products that don't bleed through or have too much show through on thinner paper. If I was in my 50's, I would definitely have ventured into a couple of premium Bibles. But at 75, God knows it has to be cheap!

You might be able to get one that is pre-owned or look in a used book store or thrift shop.
@@carmennooner2027I have a bit of a (updated) TR vs Critical Text champs cross reference going. NKJV and ESV pair so well, I think I like ESV more but I keep getting sucked right back into NKJV. I think the NKJV has a lot of nuance that doesn't help Average Joe but is good if you get the contextual criticisms and footnotes, prior to last year I just thought it was awkward. ESV is worded more concisely, double entendres aren't vague, neither is the "profanity" that's glossed over in the NKJV. Does any of that matter to people that don't read the unpleasant stuff, IDK?
I like NIV and NLT too but the above just work better for me *consistently*.

I keep going back to NKJV. I'm not a big Critical Text fan, but I wanted to try and like the ESV.
But honestly, the lack of capitalized pronouns for deity is a big distraction for me as I read. I'm so used to the NKJV capitalizing Him and His, it was difficult to make the visual transition.
I'm an amateur textual criticism buff, and I'm interested in your comments about profanity and double entendres. Can you elaborate for me?
I have the navy blue Schulyer PSQ in the NKJV translation and I really enjoy it. I find myself using my iPad more these days though for daily reading, as I have access to multiple translations as well as commentaries and helps in one tablet. Both defenitely have their benefits.

Really cool video! In my own search for "the one" I also landed on the ESV Heritage (I have one in black GS), which I used as my daily for a little over a year. It then occurred to me that I really wanted a smaller Bible that was a little easier to carry around, without sacrificing the amazing single column layout that the Heritage has. I landed on the Cambridge Clarion, and I am IN LOVE. The compact size, great font, and excellent single column layout with references on the outside is just perfect in my opinion. As of today, the Clarion is my "the one."
That's a really great choice! The Clarion is definitely the best single column compact out there. I use it quite often.
I like the idea of a set of Bibles being “The One”. That’s how I’m feeling about my Schuyler bibles as well. I have a PSQ, SQ and awaiting my ESV Stridon to hopefully complete the set.
It's definitely very useful to have different bibles for different use cases! The Schuyler bibles especially are dynamic and pleasant to the eye. Glad you love yours, too!

A lot of us have ploughed through a number of premium bibles in order to find The One. I read ESV and have the Quentel and PSQ, both of which are great bibles. Then I wanted to read the NASB for the first time 3 months ago so chose the gorgeous Black Pearl Quentel full yapp and absolutely love it, and right now it is my One of Three! My other fav is the ESV Omega by Crossway in Horween leather which is such a special leather.
So, The Three One’s are the Schuyler Quentel NASB calfskin full yapp Black Pearl, Schuyler ESV PSQ calfskin in full yapp Marbled Merlot, and Crossway ESV Omega in Horween. 💎💎💎
My wife had a Single Column Layout Bible that she loved like that one.
Most people now read from their Holy Cellphone, or Holy iPad.
I saw this a few years ago and decided to buy Bibles for nothing on Ebay. When I go to Church I read from my mom's Bible, she just went to heaven last November, and it is a NKJV with super huge Print. I will read from that until I get my cataracts out. I now need a magnifying glass for even my Walking Liberty Half collection.
Sadly, many attending church today, don't bother to read the scriptures from any source. They don't bring a printed Bible, use the one provided by the church or pickup their communications device. The younger the person the more likely they are to omit reading the Bible, during Sunday school or worship services. (sigh)

Excellent review, and I can relate to your search for the “one”. I’ve lately gotten on board with the Legacy Standard Bible. I love the translation, so I ended up purchasing some of their premium editions (A small inheritance financed my purchases). I like each of them for different reasons: My first purchase was the first edition handy size which is convenient for carry but has print that is uncomfortably small for my older eyes. The wide margin larger print edition is great for notations, but it’s a bit big and heavy. Also the later inside column reference large print edition is great for study, but it’s also large and heavy for carry. So still trying to find the right “fit”, I got the LSB two column verse by verse (although I prefer single column). It doesn’t have single column or references, but the print and the smaller thinner text block is perfect. It’s my everyday carry Bible and night time reader. Having said all that, and working through the guilt of spending so much on these Bibles (I have accumulated a number of various translation Bibles in my 43 years of Bible studies), I find myself still drawn back to my 20 year old rebound NASB Inductive Study Bible. It’s like an old friend and full of 20 years of notes. That said, I do like and use my new Bibles, and I hope one will become my new “one”.
The LSB double column vbv and the Inductive study bibles are really great picks! What's your opinion on the Stridon, then?
It’s fine but I could nit pick some things. I’d prefer a more generous yapp, 28 gsm paper will show ghosting, and honestly I’m not a fan of the 2020 revision. That’s why I changed streams and adopted the LSB. My Cinderella Bible would be an LSB single column with references, at least a 32 gsm paper, black letter, 10+ comfort font, with a soft and supple cowhide cover. All that in a easy to carry size. Unfortunately that’s pretty much a pipe dream, so I’ll just be thankful for the Bibles I have and enjoy them. One Bible reviewer once said that his favorite Bible is the one in his cart. 😆
I don't get "the guilt". Give away what you feel you've hoarded, or feel blessed to have accrued the word - why be ashamed of a library you'll share eventually (estate sale if you don't "beat the reaper")? People don't feel pressured to drive junk vehicles and wear ragged clothes to church, why do the bibles need to be cheaper than the shoes they're wearing? I guarantee those blessings, when criticized and disparaged, won't last.
Must be nice to have so many Bibles to choose from. I have several Bibles but not the premium ones. Just things off of Amazon. 😊
It's a very big blessing, though many of my bibles I give away to friends and loved ones. Even the budget bibles these days can come in really great materials. My normal day to day bible at the moment is a $20 imitation leather from Holman :)
Oh man I don't know how you could give up the ESV Heritage in favor of a double-column bible. The layout of a bible is critical, and single-column texts are unquestionably better for reading and comprehension. I'll probably be branded a heretic for saying this but my favorite version is the NRSVue and I'm dying for a single-column to be released! :)
I totally understand! I actually believe the Heritage layout is still the absolute best. If the NKJV ever gets something like it, I'll be switching to it for sure.
@@WontonDiscipleJonathan have you seen the Thomas Nelson NKJV Single Column Reference in the Premier Collection? It was all the rave when it came out a few years back. Ppl said it had the perfect layout and words per line. The brown goatskin edition was really nice!
@@emelphick4742 yes, I'm pretty familiar with almost all of the current in print NKJV bibles from TN. There are two main reasons why I don't use that bible...the gutter margin space is horrendously small and I really don't enjoy comfort print. I have other issues with that edition, such as the references being on the outer margin and the translator notes not being separate from the references, but I can live with those minor issues if the first two issues I mentioned were adjusted.

@@mygirlmacy glad you love it! It's been on my radar, especially considering it has a stiffer cover and options in black letter. What's been stopping me, though, is the comfort print and having the translation notes in with the cross references. Maybe I'll need to give it a try someday!
My favorite Bible is the Humble Lamb Shepherd. This is because it's so unique with the fore edge gilt words of Christ in blue and the Dore Gustave artwork.

@@paulajohnson6409 with their vibrant color choices and unique layouts, I could totally see that! Especially considering they had a long period of time in the last run where most of their edge lined bibles were sold out, it would make sense that folks would wanna try to collect them.

Thanks for your review, in which you focus on what I care about, too-translation and a readable text with good layout. I’m Catholic and have preferred the Reader’s Edition of the New Jerusalem Bible for the same reasons as you cite in the last Bible you discuss. But I’ve just found a marvelous new, sleeper translation called the New Catholic Bible. Unfortunately, it’s only available in a double-column format without much white space. The journey you describe in your video, however, gives me hope for either better things to come or the ability for me to adapt.
With a strong enough conviction towards a specific translation and the tools it has to offer, I can totally see you adapting well to what's available to you. Without that conviction, I can also see why some folks would hold a more dogmatic approach on sticking with the most ideal physical format for them. It's an interesting dichotomy...hopefully with the growth of the bible design community, all translations will be able to push out more editions without much issue!
Romish Catholic study BIbles and co,,emtaroes temd tp be rather (or even very) modernst. but there are some such books that are conservative in tone and expression, making them highly worthwhile, for their level of scholarship and commitment to the actual tlruth of the Holy Faith.
If you're Catholic, then why read a protestant bible???
@@peterxuereb9884The ESV has a Catholic edition. Also, I read the Bible largely for the New Testament, where the differences between Catholic and Protestant Bibles are minimal. And apart from some swaths of texts that I would rarely read, and which I can easily find in other Bibles I own, the texts of the best Catholic and Protestant Bibles are nearly indistinguishable. And I like that-we are all the Body of Christ!

Which also means that there is no error in heaven. One cannot contradict scripture by what they say that when they die, they will go to heaven. There is an old Latin saying; "Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi, Lex Vivendi. Translated it is, as we Worship, So we Believe, So we Live. In saying this it therefore also applies to the understanding that if people who worship incorrectly, they believe incorrectly, they live incorrectly. One can not mix truth with error and still claim it to be truth, any more than you can mix water, with poison, and still claim it to be, just water. If according to you that the differences between Catholics and protestantism is indistinguishable then pay attention what it say in 2Timothy chapter 4 vrs 3,4 and Also in 2Peter chapter 3 vrs 15-17 tell me if they are not concerned with any nearly indistinguishable differences. Protestants and protestantism has been, is and always will be, a contradiction to Christianity.
The Humble Lamb Lion KJV is my number one. Humble Lamb's quality is exceptional.
I love their bibles. They've definitely done well the last couple of years.
Old Scofield Study Bible KJV! I have the Cambridge and Schuyler Bibles, they are beautiful goat skin Bibles, however for me there is something about the layout of the Scofield with just the bonded leather covering, I can throw it in my purse and carry it where ever and it is very durable. Those high end bibles are more delicate and scratch easily!
I just want a Bible that I can read, learn from and live my life by.
I think we have all gotten roped in by how the Bible looks and not on What HIS word tells us!

Really glad you found a bible that you love! There's something special about a bible you can just carry around without a worry in the world. I personally think typesetting does matter when reading a bible (especially for bad eyes that need more readable format) but I agree that fawning over covers and leathers and stuff like that aren't so important.

The newer calfskins feel somewhat like a rain jacket if it were thicker. Depending on which part of the calfskin you get, it can have quite a bit of scarring which you can feel but calfskin is generally smoother and more durable. It doesn't stain or mark up as easily as goatskin, however, goatskin does feel more grippy in the hands and has a really nice pebbly feel with its deeper natural grain. Goatskin is also floppier (though they are both very floppy). Most people have a really hard time figuring out which they like better, which I can totally sympathize with, but nowadays my preference is the goatskin due to hand feel and color options available. Both are outstanding, though, I recommend people just pick whatever color they like best.

Based on the 3 goat, 2 calf I've handled, the goat is good but I'd prefer the calfskin and full yapp for future purchases. The rigidity doesn't negatively affect anything but does make for a very nice clamshell box to stop you from denting the pages when picking it up all willy nilly.... and looks amazing.
What a glorious time we live in that we can be so picky among translations, number of columns, type sizes, margin widths, font styles, leather species, paper weights, countries of origin, art gilding color, number and color of ribbons, and even (for me) smell!

And yes, I recently rejected a new NKJV journalling Bible because it smelled like diesel inside. No idea what the Chinese are doing to Bible paper...

@@Linda-zn7zq My American and Korean printed Bibles don't smell bad. Another Chinese-printed Bible I just bought is the NKJV Reader's Bible. It smelled like kerosene for a while too, but not as bad as my Journal the Word.
The bible that really surprised me is the Lockman NASB 2020 Large Print Compact. Nothing about it should draw me in. When I first saw it in video reviews, I actually hated it 😂. I prefer double column to begin with. And it was way too cramped on the page, the way the text almost looks cut off at the bottom, bad leading, small font and I have always preferred the NASB in verse by verse format. YET...I got one to try out & quickly came to love it especially as a reader! Such a handy size, nice dark print with bold verse numbers & the excellent opaque Korean paper makes it one of the best reading experiences I've known out of the many, many bibles I've had over the years. Better than the Clarion & the ESV Legacy Single Column. And I actually like the new Lockman font, haha.
I'm a pretty big fan of that little bible, too, in spite of the negatives you mentioned. I couldn't agree more with everything you just said. It's a great little edition and surprisingly wonderful to read despite its flaws.
You might like the CSB Reader Bible (one volume)
How do compare the heritage with the clarion?
They are very comparable. They both have a more conservative word count per line when it comes to single column typesettings, which I really like. While the Clarion does have smaller line spacing, it's still very readable and the font size is perfect for a more compact footprint. The Clarion is also much easier to carry around despite its thickness. I think I'd prefer it as an every day carry for the most part. The Heritage is bible perfection when it comes to typesetting, though. If I were to try to imagine a perfect one stop shop for bibles, it would definitely be the Heritage.
I love Schuyler Bibles. I have the NKJV in Quentel and PSQ, the KJV, ESV, and the NIV in PSQ as well. I like to read the Bible in different translations though my favorite is the NKJV.

But the idea of "Falling in Love" with a Bible makes some sense. I don't read my Bible(s) much (I have probably 70 bibles in over 40 translations!)
I have a hard back study bible, because it sits on the shelf well. I have some older calf skin bibles though. Noting like these gems you are looking at!! I have a "Golden Bible" from the 1950s, but it mostly stays in a box...
I am still not sure what "Quentels" refers to though...
IMHO
1. I'm debating the Crossway Heirloom Heritage ESV vs. the Schuyler Treveris ESV. I love the single column format. I love reader's Bibles or something close to a reader's Bible.
2. As far as an English translation, I think I most like the ESV. That said, I'm falling more and more in love with the CSB these days. I'm awaiting the CSB in the Holman Handcrafted Single Column Personal Size Bible (Premium Marbled Slate Calfskin). But in terms of overall quality I've heard Holman Handcrafted isn't quite on par with, say, Schuyler Bibles. The Schuyler Quentel and PSQ CSB are arguably the best premium CSB Bibles available on the market today, but these are double column, which I don't really like.
Though my personal preference would be the Heritage, whatever you choose, I'm sure you'll love it! Both are incredible bibles.
I'm hoping to get myself a CSB PSQ very soon! Just testing out a few compact editions from Holman before I pull the trigger on another premium.

@@pattube I don't have a Treveris at the moment, mostly due to the fact that it's not offered in the CSB or NKJV. Once it is, I'll be grabbing one for myself.
One Bible that really surprised me was the ESV NC1 from Allan. It’s not single column (my preference), it’s not line-matched, and it’s as big as a Quentel. But there’s something about using it that really draws me in!

I really like single column, but I have a lazy eye and it gets fatigued have read a longer line and I often lose my place when reading from a single column.

I've used the N.A.S.B. often, but off-and-on, and less as the years pass, but its lack of the O.T. Apocrypha limits its use. There are other very fine translations that include the Apocrhypha, so the American Standard draws dust on the shelves now, most of the time, and I use it much less. Anyway, the King James Version always was the best and it includes the Apocrypha, so that has remained my go-to Bible for all of my life. There are plenty of other explanations, too, and good reasons, but I won't belabour them here.
What's your opinion on the ESV, then?
As translation and as a literary product, I very much admire the English stytle and clarity of the E.S.V. On the other hand, the underlying Greek N.T. text is abomanable, taking so many drastic and weirdo variants of the Critical Text (so-called) way, way too seriously that are nothing but chaff and rubble. @@WontonDisciple
@@geraldparker8125 I find the approach of the Critical Text pretty unnerving, also, but I can stomach it if the footnotes are really good. I'm hoping to try out the BSB for that reason...though I'm not as particular as you when it comes to wanting the Apocrypha included so I've got many more options it seems 😅 the ESV is definitely one of my least favorite options available today
Yeah, the E.S.V., having held such promise, shafts itself due to its fanatidcal adherence to the "Critical Text" and another Alexandrian Text-driven Bible is NOT what the world needs. WHen it is even more relentless in that regard than other recent Bibles, it just deflates the claims. But, as I find, the Catholic Edition of the E.S.V. compensates for the Protestant stupidity behind the E.S.V.'s oecumenical text. If the R.S.V. 2nd Catholic Edition were not so fine, I would say that the E.S.V. Catholic Edition resolves the problem more successfully, but it still does not quite compensate.
Actually, I have rather a goodly quantity of study Bibles without Apocrypha. I prefer to have study Bibles and commentaries upon the entire BIble, but there are too many really excellent such publications that lack the deuterocanonical writings to eliminate them. What I dislike are the many dispensationalist and Arminian study Bibles that proliferate from the tawdry ranks of Fundamentalists, Methodists, and Pentecostals, which I just avoid as entirely as possible. I have the N.K.J.V. edition of the "Reformation Study Bible", wherein the text of the Bible itself for the N.T. is done from the Textus Receptus, unlike as in the E.S.V. edition of the R.S.B. That helps. In fact, it is one of my three or four favourite study Bibles. The best one of all is "The Lutheran Study Bible" (referring to the Concordia Publishing House publication of that title), which has a study Apocrypha to match it. Yeah, the E.S.V. is less committed to Reformation theology (i.e. Lutheran or Reformed), thus a tad wan and without the focus of the R.S.B.

There are thousands upon thousands of variants to consider aside from just that one. As long as one knows that, the ESV is a fine translation. And Elhanan killed the brother of Goliath, not Goliath himself.

Every one who chooses a bible based on readability is wrong. . You need to compare them to other versions for accuracy and to doctrine errors like weakening the deity of Christ
You can find the deity of Christ in the CSB easily. And the actual question to ask is not "does this weaken the deity of Christ," the question to ask is "is this translation accurate?" How are you sure the scribes copying the later manuscripts used in the Textus Receptus didn't add words when making copies?
Modern translations are based on corrupt manuscripts some of which are of questionable origin. With over 300 modern translations it is nearly impossible to get an accurate modern translation based on the majority of manuscripts. Modern transliterations are only to make money
Modern bible versions are translated according to the views of the translators which is according the practice of dynamic equivikicy which is a fancy word for paraphrasing making the translation questionable at best
@@LadyCathryn not every dynamic translation is paraphrastic and the CSB isn't a dynamic translation anyhow. Neither is the NASB, ESV, NKJV, LSB, and many more, some of them being even more literal than the KJV. Every translation has to have some degree of interpretation... that's just how language works. Perhaps you mean to question the kinds of manuscripts they base their translation on...if that's the case, that's a totally different argument.

Please compare 1st John 5:7 in the NKJV vs either the NAV/NAS/NASB 77/95 or KJV before deciding to land on the NKJV as your "the one Bible".
The above is only one example of text that has been totally changed or omitted in the NKJV translation and there are many more that you can find with just a little research.
I do not say these things to be mean but as a brother in Christ I hate to see anyone missing out on any or part of God's Word or entire meanings being changed.
That being said those are some beautiful Bibles you have in your collection and I'm not saying to stop reading the NKJV but to maybe after reading it go back and read either the KJV or NASB the later of which is based on authentic scripture they did not have access to in 1611 when the KJV was translated. The New Testament in the KJV is almost entirely based on the "Textus Receptus" which was basically all they had access to other than a few fragments back in the late 1500's to early 1600's.
I have an ESV on the way and will be doing the same comparison. I know I could do the comparisons online but it's just not the same to me as holding and using an actual physical Bible.

I'm actually very aware of the issues with passages like 1 John 5:7 and would agree that the TR rendering is most definitely inaccurate, however, the NKJV has a very robust translation note system that shows alternate renderings and most of the NT closely resembles the majority of the extant manuscript readings. So because the notes are transparent and it mostly resembles a Majority Text reading of the NT, that's why I chose it. Once the Majority Standard Bible is published and printed, however, I'll most likely switch to that translation, as I'm a big proponent for the Robinson-Pierpont NT as a basis
@@WontonDisciple I wish my copies although notably cheaper than most of yours had the` "robust" notes in them as they do not and I've never seen an edition of the NKJV that does. None I've seen make mention of the fact that they completely removed the Trinity from them in that verse but again I think my most expensive Bibles are $149 or less. Thanks for the response as it's always good to know the person making any given video actually interacts with their viewers.

You should read more translations. Esv is terrible. Im a pastor scholar who has worked extensively with translations.
@@sohu86x ESV is one of my least favorite translations, though it's certainly viable. It's one of many I currently have, so your suggestion has already been a practice of mine for some time. Currently reading the NJV, NKJV, NASB95, & the NRSVUE interchangeably.

THE BEST one is the NEW KING JAMES version- NOT the KJV- but the NEW kjv--- it is the same as KJV-- very careful translation WITHOUT all the stupid OLD ENGLISH "thee's, thou's, and that stupid language that ONLY SHAKESPEARE and his fools used-- (english people as a whole never ever spoke that way- just the stage doofuses!!! ).. NKJV is the BEST-- VERY ACCURATE and confirmed translations-- with NO old english - so it's EASY to understand but still very accurate!!! I just had to get a NEW one--- because I LOST one eye. I loved the small one I had when I could read it-- but the one eye I have left- has a special lens in it for seeing at any distance but that cuts down on light getting in-- so I need the bigger print to read without bright light shining on it.
Please compare 1st John 5:7 in the NKJV vs either the NAS/NASB 77/95 or KJV before deciding to land on the NKJV as your "the one Bible".
The above is only one example of text that has been totally changed or even omitted in the NKJV translation and there are many more that you can find with just a little research.
I do not say these things to be mean but as a brother in Christ I hate to see anyone missing out on any or part of God's Word or the entire meaning of parts of it being changed.
The NASB from '77 or '95 are based on authentic scripture they did not have access to in 1611 when the KJV was translated.
Either should work well for you considering they are both American Standard Translations so no archaic language and both are translated to be readable to a Modern English speaking reader.

The NKJV which relies heavily on the KJV for it's New Testament is also limited by the same factor and even more so because of the changes that remove or change the original scripture.

@@PastorwithoutaPulpit I've had my uncle translate forme-- he speaks GREEK and several other languages fluently-- and HE agrees with me..
@@PastorwithoutaPulpit Foolish! they say the same thing in both the outdated KJV and the NKJV. Two different words that sat the same thing. You are simply being divisive. The KJV has numerous errors in it, just as many others also.
