this is the problem i'm having with a dog i just adopted from the shelter. he has no problem going up by going down is an issue. i'm at the point where i'll likely just block him from going upstairs.
life saving! my 105lb labradoodle won’t go down the stairs after a new deck and stair installation. He has been showing angst about going down the inside stairs but if I stand on the stairs and encourage him to come with me, he’ll come just not outside near the deck.
This video was a great tool for me. Last night both my new GSD puppy and I had our first experience with training up and down stairs. I only had access to an outside staircase, concrete, with a landing halfway down and a 90 degree turn. Using his standard kibble as encouragement, He went up the stairs on his own last night, but refused to come down. I spent two training sessions last night on down. I used his harness handle to carry him down while encouraging him to use his feet, but even after advancing the enticement from kibble to soft meat treats, all I could accomplish last night was getting him to plant both front feet one step down and accept a treat. This morning I resumed. I took his morning meal outside and was able to get him two steps down. I let him eat his meal there to acclimate and to associate the positive feeding with the staircase. After a few hours of break time, I upped the enticement ante again, this time to a peanut butter filled Kong (unfrozen). This was the magic piece. He followed that peanut butter all the way to the landing and then received the remainder of the peanut butter as a reward. That one success was all he needed. He has now confidantly gone up and down full staircase several times, and has been rewarded for his first successful trip down with his first true leash walk (hes been under quarantine until he got his final vaccines this week). While ive never used and had no access to a clicker as featured in this video, the rest of the information was gold and made me feel in control of the training session. Thank you so much, no staircase will ever daunt my puppy again :)
@@johnwatson8192 The poisonous ingredient in peanut butter that you are thinking of is called "Xylitol". It's a rare ingredient that isn't commonly found in top name brands like Jif. Any peanut butter that you wish to feed your dog is perfectly safe as long as you check the ingredients list on the jar first and ensure there is no Xylitol.
I have a ten month old Siberian husky who will race up and down one set of stairs but refuses to go down the basement stairs (identical to the other ones) They're carpeted and the basement is fully furnished and that's where we spend most of our time. The other dog, his buddy hangs out in the basement too.
I've brought him down there twice. Once when he was eleven weeks old and again, maybe 4 1/2 months old. Both times carried him down. He stayed down there and sniffed around for a few minutes and then I don't remember if he was carried back up or ran back up. I thought maybe with the one set of steps that he doesn't mind, he can see all the way down to the living room through the rail and the basement he can't see all the way down. I bought a full length mirror and put it halfway down the steps and he can see down to the bottom. Nope, still doesn't work. He's never had a reason that I know of to fear going down there. First time out of six dogs this has happened. Still working with him. I know huskies are strong willed and I've asked two of our vets and they don't have an answer either. Maybe our house was built over an old burial ground, haha. Who knows?
Hello, I need your help! I have to move temporarily to a new place and my unit is in the basement. My dog is 8.5 years old and she goes up and down the stairs but she won’t go down to the basement. How do I help her get over the fear of going down to the basement? Please help, thank you 🙏🙏🙏
So, I just moved into an apartment, and my dog (greyhound) will not got up or down the stairs. It's 9 steps open slotted. Only way I van get him up is by picking him up. I understand that undermines the training but I have to get him in the apartment and I have to take him out to pee.he 65lbs and I have a bad back. He's mostly use to 4 or 5 stairs. He has done a harder set of stairs in the past. Idk what to do I'm so tired and just one thing after another. Any help would be appreciated.
My dog came up the stairs with me up to the roof (my house has an open roof) and now he is living in it cause he’s too afraid to go back down the stairs. This is his first time in this house and I’m afraid he is already too afraid. I’ve been keeping him with his front feet on the first stair down with treats but he shakes when trying to step on to the second. I see he tries but he either does not remember or is too afraid of falling. We have another dog who goes up and down without issues and I haven’t had any process over the days. Any help in the comments would be appreciated :(
we’ve been doing this for almost a week now and he still cant go pass the first step. it’s like he doesnt want to use his hind legs 😅 any advice how we can help him? thanks!
My dog goes down stairs with back legs doing a bunny hop together, every other step. He is a Massive Male St .Bernard and would love to break him of this habit
My rescue dog doesn't know what treats are! Can't do clicker training without? Just had a bedtime nightmare. He needed a pee, and was trying to get him down. He got down, but peed at the bottom. Managed to get him outside but we were both so stressed I was nearly crying, trying to calm him down when he could clearly sense how stressed I was.
My dog will raise up the stairs like there’s no tomorrow but my steps are so steep I have 14 I live in a very small townhome and my dog is 6 pounds but he is terrified to go down the steps. And I had another dog for a year and a half of his life and that dog was even smaller was only 4 pounds and she would race down the stairs and up until the very end she had a harder time at the end of her life. But I still can’t get him to go down the stairs. And so I always carry him down the stairs but he’ll go up the stairs on his own any suggestions?
my dog will stand at the tops of the stairs, but she refuses to step onto them. I have a platform on my stairs at the bottom and two more stairs after that. she'll go down those, and I put her on the last 4 stairs and she went down. she just won't go down from the top of the stairs.
My dog is blind in one eye and is slipping on the stairs which makes him even more afraid. How would you recommend safely teaching him how to go downstairs? He does know how to go up the stairs and sometimes is very comfortable with that and sometimes is not.
Hello we have moved and our bedroom is down in the basement, so there’s 3 stairs then the landing then about 20 stairs, my girl is 3 and she is a Great Dane. She does stairs outside up and down but won’t go down to the basement, I’m gonna try what yr doing in yr video but is there anything else I can do?
Thank you so much for posting this! I just rescued a 8m puppy a week ago. He is fine with normal stairs, but terrified of the floating stairs to my apartment - won't go up or down and we've been carrying him for the past week but he is almost 50lbs!! Will this training plan help him with going up the stairs too?
hey, i didn't know any better when i got my husky. she's 7m old and she's never been up or down the stairs. we got her a few days ago from a neighbor and its been really hard to get her down the stairs. its been 6 days so far and she hasn't gone on a walk yet, which is pretty bad. i was woken up at 7am with her whimpering and guessed that she needed to pee. i tried everything to get her down and ultimately failed so i picked her up and now she's very anxious. I tried your training tips for about 4 days and no dice. Please leave me some suggestions
How do you teach or train a puppy with the clicker? Do you have another video? We enjoy this video because our 12 week old bernedoodle is afraid to go down stairs but runs up the stairs. We carry him down and he's getting heavy, 25 lbs.......we will try your click process with the stairs and hope it works.

That’s a long answer, but first I’d need to know if the dog eats treats at home when he is super relaxed?
