I decided to throw up a few samples of the new FotoDiox ND Throttle Lens Adapter up today. The ND Throttle version I have is a Canon FD Lens to Micro Four Thirds, and i'm showing these examples with my Panasonic GH4 camera. Comment at the blog: cheesycam.com/c...

That adapter and adjusting white balance for a blue hue and you have some nice day for night ability.

***** That might be a fun test. Maybe i'll try that sometime.

Really nice review, man. I didn't see any color casting or reduction in sharpness. I find that incredibly impressive for a $100 adapter with a 10 stop ND filter built in. It's absolutely incredible. Thanks for sharing!

It is impressive how much range the ND filter has in this adapter. I don't see the X pattern that is common with variable ND filters as they approach their maximum setting.

    Awesome!
I just spotted this on Amazon before this video popped up on my sub feed.

So we would have to ditch speedboosters with this ND I'm assuming? Even shooting f 4 / 5.6 the reduction in focal length is a God send.

AbstrakMedia Yeah sorry, can't use Speedboosters with this adapter.

all we need now is this built into a speed booster...

The Fotodiox adapter looks very promising! But the images are so sharp for FD lens (if you are shooting really at wide open for all the lens). Can you list out the FD lens that you used within the review?

Shun Lee I call out the lenses during the samples, but they are a 50mm F/1.4, 20mm F/2.8, and 200mm F/4. NOTE: I was not wide open all the time in each lens. I call out what my aperture settings are in the video.
The reason I don't shoot at the widest is because most lenses are never sharp at it's widest aperture. Even a $2000 dollar Zeiss lens will not be as sharp at F/1.2 so most lenses are 'stopped down' 1-2 stops for what they call the 'sweet spot'. (google it).
So if you want the best from your lens, play around with stopping down from it's widest aperture. Still from my examples you can see how small of a focal plane I was working with and how blurred out the background was. If I was to shoot at the widest you would barely see anything in focus.

I'm going to buy a GH4 in two weeks. I'll sell my canon 600d to collect all the money I need, but I'm not sure what kind of lenses to buy yet. I only own a 50mm1.8 and some other bad stuff that I want to get rid of, so I have to decide either to buy this adapter and some canon lenses or to buy just one panasonic lens that covers all the distances. I have a few questions though:
How can I change my DOF if I can't change the f by using this adapter?
Which features would I loose without Lumix G lenses or the Metabones Speedbooster?
Canon lenses are really that good compared to Panasonic lenses?
For the moment, I lean forward more to buy Panasonic 14-140, but I would like to hear your opinion. Once again: I don't have any good lens at the moment.
Thank you and sorry for my English (I support you from Italy),
    Bye!

This adapter is for OLD Canon FD Lenses. They all have manual aperture dials built into the lens so you can change your F stop on the lens.
The Metabones Speedbooster gives you a wider view and let's in more light to increase your max aperture value.
Canon FD lenses are a great start for video with the GH4. They are cheap and have good quality.

I'll be able to change focal length?
ND in 1000 I would have more objects in focus?
    thank you

AM VIDEOS Changing focal length is done on the lens, not on this adapter.

I did not speak right, actually I wanted to know if the adapter works just like a iris, opening at most would have less focal field and opening at least more area in focus.
      I'm sorry the bad english.

AM VIDEOS An ND Filter does not work in the same way as an iris (aperture). This adapter allows you to use manual lenses. When you are using manual lenses, you change the aperture on the lens.

Thanks for the video review, Em. How is the fit with this adapter and the GH4? Some inexpensive adapters are a bit loose and sloppy. Do you think having the ND filter between the lens and the sensor has any benefit (other than convenience) compared to a $100 filter in front of the lens? I already have a very good FD to MFT adapter, and wonder if I'm better off buying a $100 variable ND filter.

What photo style you usually use in GH4? For air, what do you recommend? In CineD realize the presence of grains. This is normal?

    • @MrCheesyCam
      @MrCheesyCam  10 років тому

The CineD mode is not that bad, but once you start adding iresolution, master pedestal, and changing shadow highlight you can introduce weird effects. I switch between different profiles and I don't have a favorite right now. I too am still playing around with these settings to find out what works best.

Thanks for the samples. I'm ready to upgrade from my 70D to (probably) a GH4, since the A7S is still a bit out of my price range. All the different options for adapters and lens mounts get really confusing, so perhaps you could clarify some things for me.
I always film with a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 (Canon EF-Mount), and want to use this adapter with the GH4. Will my image be zoomed in/cropped because of the MFT sensor? I don't want to fork out hundreds of dollars for a speedbooster, because that would defeat the purpose of me getting this affordable adapter in the first place. Please advise.

    • @MrCheesyCam
      @MrCheesyCam  8 років тому

+Elephants Fly The sensor on a GH4 is smaller than the Big Glass Circle on the back of a Canon Lens. That means that only the middle part of the lens is being used and you only see a portion of what the lens image is truly displaying. Hence why your image will be 'cropped' when using a full frame lens on a sensor that does not see a full frame image.

Hi, does the shutter speed effect video if it is above a certain amount i.e 60/1?
