Nitrogen Charge Your Own Shocks with this Power Tank Fill Kit!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 тра 2018
- In this video I'll show you how to fill your own performance Jeep shocks with Nitrogen using this complete kit from Power Tank by checking all the MetalCloak Six Pack shocks on the AutoEdit Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.
Many of the nitrogen filled shocks on the market today are periodically required to get a refill or re-charge and as a Jeep owner you can take them to a shop for service or invest in a kit like this one to do them yourself.
I bought this kit from Power Tank and it comes complete with everything you need to do most shocks. You still have to fill the tank with Nitrogen and to do that I bought a small refillable tank from my local Praxxair shop.
Here's a link to the Power Tank web page of Nitrogen options:

Thanks for watching!
#powertank #jeep #nitrogen
It is rare to find a bloke that enjoys taking care of his junk as much as you. You provide a good example for lots of us.
Thanks so much!
Nothing better than a jeep video on a boring Sunday
Mo Jo my thoughts exactly.
You are the best!
Thanks so much!
I'm lucky to have friends like you guys here on the youtubes!
You know its going to be a good day when you're sitting down have a cup of coffee, open up UA-cam, and bam!!! Jason's loaded up a new AutoEdit video! 👍
Dang, this is nice to hear... thanks!
I agree to this!! Love his videos!
I’ve been waiting for a video of yours!
Hi Jason,
great video.
I thought I'd mention that without purging the line between the nitrogen bottle and the powertank bottle, you force ambient air, which is in the line and regulator into the powertank. This also happens on each shock as you charge it. Therefore all shocks and the powertank are contaminated. This will force your pressures inside the shock and powertank to change with temperature since air expands and contracts as it heats or cools. This is why dry nitrogen is used, as it is an inert gas.
Not trying to be a jerk here, just thought I'd share my knowledge and possibly help. (refrigeration technician 23 long years).
Built my JK based on yours. Your instructional videos guided me through my fenders, steering and suspension. Would have really struggled without you in the garage with me. Thanks so much buddy.
Howdy and thanks for the well thought out and constructive advice. While I totally appreciate proper protocol for things such as this (I spent years in aerospace fabrication) there must be some wiggle room in the instance for these shocks. I've watched the top tier shock tuner for Fox working on zillion dollar trophy truck shocks this same way. I wonder if the amount of ambient air mixed in isn't large enough to make a difference? Again... thanks for being cool about the suggest and I totally appreciate the input! I learn stuff every day because of people like you!
Thank you Jason, I already order the kit, because MC told me check every 6 months. I was concern that maybe it would be hard to do, but you show that take patience but can be done.
Thanks bud! Oh by the way on the Bushing thing, when I spoke with Will Richardson at MetalCloak at the beginning gave me some kind of hard time, but as soon as they understood what was happening they send me the bushing over night totally free.
I can tell, that they have great customer service and I am glad I read your comment so all workout. Thanks Bud!
Really glad to hear they took good care of you, I knew they would because Metalcloak is awesome, but it is always a bummer to find a faulty part. This whole process ended up being kind of fun and I didn't even know to check them at 6 month intervals... I just kind of abused them for over a year and finally when one of the bodies changed... decided to jump in and care for them!
Man I really like the way you do your videos! Always fun to watch and you explain the things really good!
Awesome video Jason, I was debating on getting this same kit to maintain the shocks on my Polaris rzr, this video pretty much sealed the deal
It's an investment for sure but this kit comes with EVERYTHING you need and the stuff just feels like top quality!
Jason please make more videos the quality of them are amazing & very knowledgeable!!
I'm trying to do more... but you tube doesn't make it easy to rely on income from here. Working on it though.
Great looking kit. I wish I could keep my jeep that clean and rust free. I hate the New England winters
Powertank has the best quality!!! I love all their stuff.
It does all feel like top notch stuff for sure!
Thanks Chris!
Always love the videos man! Been a fan since the silver third gen Camaro, miss seeing that car. Please, MORE LARGE MARGE!
The good old Camaro... such a good car! Thanks for sticking around all this time and I'll get back on Marge soon!
Another great video on a boring sunday 😊 thanks Jason👍 Can’t wait the dodge video...
Thanks so much dude!
Happy to see a new video!
I know it's been a bit... I'll work on a few more!
That’s a really interesting tool to have, it also gives you the certainty that you are filling to the correct pressure and not some arbitrary amount that a reckless guy chooses in the rush to be done with you. I once saw a Fox air shock blew up because it was overfilled during a rally competition
Wow!
Yes, and your insurance is void if you are in a competition and wreck it
Cool Stuff Jason, Looks like those shocks are well worth every $. I was recently on the market for some shocks for my 91 Bronco. Just installed some Rancho RS9000XL 9-way adjustables, purchased from the JCW website. No quite the same as a 6-pack MetalCloak but my Bronco did require 6 in total. (4front, 2 rear) Simply amazing what a high quality shock can do for a vehicle's performance.
Agreed... shock make a big difference! Glad to hear you got stuff from JCW... I've had good luck with them lately.
Take care!
I love your jeep videos
Thanks!!!
Pinto is the star of the show, beautiful dog you have
That is a nice piece of kit!!! You splashed out U$500 but now you will have this kit for the rest of your life, that is not so bad then...
Plus the time saved from not having to drive to a shop to fill the shocks every time!
Cant wait to see what you put on the RAM!
It's going to be good!
Looking forward to the suspension upgrade on the RAM. I want to do the same thing.
I don't watch much TV these days Jason, but while watching one evening at dinner, I would swear that I saw you in a car commercial.
I can neither confirm or deny these rumors... OK... that was me in a KIA commercial and it was an awesome day at work!
ALRIGHT!!!
Thanks to you, I'm getting the MC lift and 6packs. Hope you get some kickback.
That is awesome to hear! You will be thrilled with the product and customer support. I don't get a kick back but they may take me on a great trip on the Rubicon next month so that would be great!
autoedit awesome, hopefully I will see you there.
I'm getting the new Rubicon Express dual coilovers this Tuesday! It was either that or the King coilovers....
I think I saved a few pennies. 🤑🤑🤑
Looking forward to my trek up to Moon Rocks next week, and not feeling like my Jeep is gonna fall apart on the dirt roads at 30mph. 🤞
Any shock upgrade is helpful once you put big tires on these things! Enjoy your trip!
Cool kit. I've been using the gases out my oxygen/acetylene torches becauses my boss refills them for free ( to me ).
Acetylene charged shocks... could be the next big thing!
Very interesting subject. If you know how to do it right and u have equipment it's better to do it your self and do not risk that mechanic can mess something in your suspension. Great video as always, very interesting. Thanks for some footage with Pinto, I realy enjoy it. Greetings :)
Well, I appreciate the support and great comment from you! Howdy and thank you!
Thanks for the demo. Kudos to the Mechanics Creeper seat. A must-have for any smart home mechanic.
Already a fan but when I saw the closing shot of that beautiful Eldorado Biarritz, I became a SuperFan. What is the 'backstory'?
So glad you liked the Cadillac (and knew it was a Biarritz!) That is an '85 with only 40,000 original miles and is in really great condition. Should I do a video on it?
Awesome thanks
Thank you!
My only problem with your channel is you don't upload often enough! I love watching your jeep videos. (:
Well, I'm going to keep trying to get more done! Thanks for watching the stuff up here now!
If you want something done right you have to do it yourself unfortunately. Keep up the great videos Jason!
Sometimtes... Thanks!
I watch for Pinto. Another great video as always though.
Nice
Aww, was hoping for some Jeep-action in the end there.
Loved your ride up state, and also the one trip you had with the RTT. Any chance you will do another long video like those again?
Thanks, I'm actually going to Death Valley again in a few days... should I bring some camera gear and shoot it?
Yes please!
Was testdriving a 2013 JKU with 2.8crd today. Absolutely loved the car! He had installed a 10» android unit instead of the original, and it worked really well with backup-camera and all. Something you should consider? 😁
Well Jason, you did it. Picked up my 2012 JKU 2.8crd last week, been overlanding in Sweden the last four days and I love the car.
Hope your hand heals up good and quick!
Thanks!
According to Metalcloak 6Pak shocks owner's guide, you need to have the shocks fully extended when servicing. I found the video informative and will be purchasing the equipment you showed so I can service my 6Paks.
Awesome!
@@AutoEdits And I should have added that since you put the jack stands on the frame you allowed the axles to droop to the limit of shock full extension so you were doing it correctly.
Awesome video man, how well has that power tank kit performed for you to date? Seeing mixed reviews so wanted to see how much you use it and if its leak and problem free. Thanks!
I like it and it makes sense for me since I have 2 vehicles with nitrogen shocks. here's a current video of me using it ua-cam.com/video/ZaAjwDBIhQg/v-deo.html
I put Demolition Ranch on pause to watch your video.
Ha! That means a lot!!!!!!
Awesome set up let’s us know how it rides.
Will do!
Amazing video Jason! I will try to answer any questions in the comments so ask away!
Thanks so much! I couldn't be happier with this kit.
How much?
And on ram remove all those round lights, get stubby antennae, fix dents, and get ADD bumpers.
I have the same shocks and need to re charge them. what size bottle would i need to get ? what is the conversion for psi to tank size in lbs ?
Love you from iraq ❤
Nice video! Just a little input here, if you wanna save a few bucks, you can fill up the little tank for a dollar per 1000 psi at your local Paintball store 😉
Pretty sure the one you got is a steel thank which it takes up to 3000 psi, or if its carbon fiber will take 4,500psi. I bet that will be more than enough.
Good info!
Another great Jeep video! What are those rims? They are nice!
Thanks! Those are Rugged Ridge XHD and have been fantastic.
autoedit my next buy!
Please get LED headlights,Light bar, stubby antennae, and LED front turn signals.
Agreed on almost all those things... you'll have to wait and see what's next... you might like it!
Heads up for all the 6Pack owners or if you guys plan to have them, if you guys go through mud, water or really hardcore rock, you have to maintain your shocks after it. When I refer to mud or water is not just a stormy day or a weee moment in a pond. I mean hardcore kinda PeeWee at SMORR. Matters of fact, if you are planning go to SMORR get your power tank with you
Jason, are you working on that high jack and Jerry can videos? Would love to see what you go with and where you put the high jack.
Still trying to figure out where to put the hi-lift jack!
best place i saw was behind the spare tire. since you put a spacer there, there might be room, but not sure if your spare holder allows it.
The kit from the bulk supply tank, up to and including the small tank, is a glorified paintball setup. That small tank looks to be a 68ci 4500 psi tank and even has the threading for paintball use. And then it's regulated down even more for precision
True
We don't want to reinvent the wheel if we don't have to! That is a 72ci 3000 psi bottle with a standard paintball valve. Everything beyond that like the regulator, shock inflator, and the wrench are our own design.
if you do not need the portable powertank, i'm assuming you can just fill your shocks up directly from the big tank. And if that is the case, what size tank would you recommend someone get if they are only planning to refill nitrogen in reservoirs once a year?
I think the smallest tank my local Airgas supports is the one you see in this video and it would work great but just be a bit awkward to get under a vehicle.
Sweet another Jeep video. Bout time
Agree!
Please tell me I am not going banannas bro did you just part take in a SUV commercial? Rock climbing in a Sorento?
What front bumper is that?
Id swap the Power air tank for a paintball carbon fiber nitrogen air tank. Can get different sizes and up to 4500 psi.
Great idea, I just dug my old carbon fiber paint ball tank out and it does have a much higher rating!
How do you still feel about the 6 pack shocks a few years later? Would you recommend them or if you did it again go coilovers? Maybe struts?
I still love the 6Pak Shocks. When I eventually get them rebuilt... I'll go with their current valving to slow down the rebound a bit and that would make them even better for my style of driving. So yes... love them and would do them again.
Ok great, then my jku build is finally complete lol
Lol, it's like the 3000 psi bottles I use to work on the MH60s
Have crossed your mind changing the JK for the JL?
I would absolutely love a new JL but the cost is way out of my range for now!
You know of a good Jeep dealership in SoCal? Thanks man.
I don't know a dealership but I recommend BlackStone Jeep Shop in Santa Clarita for maintenance. Tell them I sent you.
With all your upgrades, what would be the difference in the Rubicon and a Sport?
I'm still glad to have a Rubicon. The Dana 44 axles are holding up well and the integrated locking differentials, sway bar disconnect and 4.6:1 transfer case are still items I would've had to upgrade but have already.
autoedit you mean 4:1?
#whatareicons. But seriously they are good shocks, I would invest in their UCAs with the rebuildable ball joints
Did I miss the reason why you are switching from 6 pack shocks?
No way... I'm not changing the 6 Packs... I love them!
The Icons are for my Dodge 4x4
You should get a exhaust for that Jeep
It has a Flowmaster American Thunder kit on it!
Can you use that set up for filling your tires?
.
You can but that small tank doesn't have a bunch of volume for 35 or 37" tires... I may do a test just to see. Would work perfect for a road car tire though!
It can help you in an emergency but I wouldn't rely on it for tire fills. As Jason said, N2 has much less usable energy than CO2 which is found in our other Power Tank systems.
All you need now is nitrogen shocks for large marge
Questions
Loss of just gas
Or oil leak leading to loss of gas
Pinto is cool baby
Only the rear shocks were a bit low and that was because I wheeled hard on a big trip loaded and with a roof top tent. I remember bottoming the rear hard many times... since I topped off the rear shocks things are back to perfect and there has never been any oil leaks at all.
Pets for Pinto! thanks
autoedit ok I got falcon 3.4 on my JKU to my understanding nitrogen is in a diaphragm bag to separate the gas in your oil but to keep oil under pressure to 150 psi
OK just adding gas would that bust that Diaphragm sooner or later You lost 25 pounds of gas just by connecting the airline so you take a pop bottle cap of oil how much of a gas lost is that.
This is just something to think about and I love your UA-cam channel I watch all your videos thanks
This is very random but.. Jason, I feel that along with being a super smart and knowledgable car guy.. I can only assume you're great at saving money also.. lol would you ever do a video on budgeting and saving money? 😂
I'm the opposite of all those things... lol!
autoedit so humble!! Haha
#instantlikesforpinto !!! Lol
Yes!
What is your other job if you don’t mind my asking?
Just freelance video work right now.
Must've been very hard for you to not clean it right before working on the jeep 😂
It was, the only thing that kept me from going farther was my hurt finger!
Nice kit but that $500 kit is now $659.95. Must be made in China and subject to tariffs.
Great video as always Jason! I’m gonna look into our local Praxair retailer and see what the charge for a small tank of N2. Can you send a link to me for the fill up kit you used...? Thanks Jason.... I gotta go replace rear axle seals and rear brakes on mine after a full day of adventure yesterday...!!! Check out Nova Scotia Jeep Club North Nova on Facebook.... mine is the yellow YJ...!! Cheers to you and Pinto!! 😎👍
This is the specific kit I got: www.powertank.com/products/sfID1/29/productID/438
I just checked out that page and wow that mud looked fun! Good luck on your repairs and Cheers to you!
How old is Pinto?
I think she is 8 or 9
autoedit Thanks! You and Pinto are actually the ones who convinced me to get my first dog as to join in my camping and offroading. I love it!
First
GO another off road with the RAM
Love your videos, but that Power Tank kit is seriously over priced and just bling. You could get a smaller bottle from the local weld shop, get your own regulator, and that no loss strut chuck is only like $30 on Amazon. You could have a complete system for probably under $200, maybe less if you find a used regulator from a medical supply surplus store. That is Power Tank setup is a lot of money for rare need to carry nitrogen conveniently.
The point of this video isn't how to do this the cheapest... I even say that. This is a very high quality and complete kit for the Jeeper that wants the convenience of it all together.
I agree that it can done more cheaply, like most things. You can find a junk yard axle and piece it together to make sure it's compatible with your jeep or you can buy a crate axle designed for the jeep with jeep specific engineering. We designed this kit for the race teams who are doing shock tuning in remote areas of Baja or Johnson Valley who want everything in a portable, self-contained kit. When you're out there, quality and reliability are the two most important factors in choosing your equipment. We have a lot of design and engineering behind each individual component of this kit and we spec only the absolute highest quality components we can get a hold of. The shock inflator gauge, for instance, is filled with silicone oil because silicone does not slow down in cold weather like typical glycerin oil does. The body of the shock inflator is machined from billet aluminum and hand assembled at our shop in CA. etc. etc.
We appreciate folks like you, armourbl, because we're tinkerers at heart, too. The original Power Tanks were hand assembled with mostly off-the-shelf parts in a garage. We diy as much as we can here at the shop and on our personal rigs. But when it comes to products we stand behind, well, they have to be the best we believe they can be, otherwise we wouldn't sell them. We're not into cutting corners.
I'd much rather watch an innovative DIY video of a pieced together kit, than see someone blow $500 on tool which is essentially a regulator, tank and valve. Anodising must cost a lot these days!
ColourClassic exactly now not make a video about how to save $500 by not having to waste it on this kit, unless, he is getting paid an is not sharing this information. So at the end of the day, he is just making youtube commercials for this company, so fuck him for not being honest about it.
Interested in selling me your old shocks? I’m in the market and will pay the shipping.
The old shocks from the Ram? They are all blown.
autoedit I wrote too soon, I thought you were replacing the 6 packs.
Awesome video as always!
Ha...heck no... love my 6Packs!
Thanks dude!
Why waste time & money moving gas from one bottle to another? I've been using gas charged shocks for 35 years, and never had a need for portable nitrogen. I've seen suspension pros just using a tank, regulator, and regular schrader fill fitting.
Pinto!
your videos are great but you repeat a lot of things making your videos way too long.. should get to the point.
Uh i uh could barely uh listen to this uh guy uh for half of uh the video. Pro tip man if public speaking isn't your strong point write your self a script, or flash cards. Nice jeep btw.
Man I really like the way you do your videos! Always fun to watch and you explain the things really good!
Thanks so much for watching and taking a minute say such a cool and supportive thing! I appreciate that a bunch.
