I so enjoy these quirky little love songs from Paul. Even if about his pet dog it still holds a timeless quality and gives me a warm feeling inside. Melodically gorgeous, beautifully sung, harmonically intricate. Stripped of the Martin arrangement, it stands alone as another example of McCartney's genuine talent as a writer.
So great to hear the band playing without the arrangement (which is not to decry the arrangement). So incredibly tight. Not enough is said about The Beatles feel and their solid time. IMO one of the reasons their music holds up so well today is because their records have none of that throwaway overplaying sloppiness of so many of their contemporaries. I’m convinced that Ringos pocket is up their with Hal Blane and any number of American session drummers of the 60’s. But the whole band have amazing time, especially McCartney.
