"Remoulade" is not meant to be on "rugbrød" alone maybe with the "torskerovn"... It's mostly used for hotdogs and french fries...
And the pålægschokolade are meant to be on bread... Not just eating it alone. And with a little bit of butter under, mmm I like that

I am pretty sure he was comparing it to other kinds of sandwich spread. Considering they already tasted smørbrød in Copenhagen, then i believe they know it is not normally used as a lone ingredient. They probably just wanted to taste the remoulade alone without any kind of filling.

As a South African let me explain, we speak a bunch of languages but mostly Afrikaans, basically imagine If the Dutch language got adapted by slaves, but our language isnt that simple since we have 11 languages and all of them sound different depending on where you are, it's really strange, but it's funny

    • @mikaelwojciechowski7281
      @mikaelwojciechowski7281 4 роки тому

@@morganelliston As for me, I was fully aware of this already. :)
But since I do have Swedish as my first language and having studied German for a few years, I can somewhat understand some Afrikaans as well. Written Afrikaans is easier for me to understand than spoken, though. However, if the person speaks slowly and clearly, I may understand enough to at least get around.
But yeah, a nation of 11 official languages, that sure is something unique.

Hmm.. I realize I'm late to the party ;) But as a Dane (with apparently the manners to write in English), I figured I would give a bit of a service announcement about some of the foods.
    1. Flæskesvær: Yes. These are indeed just pork rinds. What I don't know is, whether we make them differently or not - but based on the reaction, probably not.
    2. Rugbrød: We have loads of different kinds. The one in the video is with sunflower seeds, which is in the milder range where seeds and grains are concerned.
    3. Remoulade: ("Økologisk" = organic). It's mayonnaise with some different pickles and curry powder in it. It's not really eaten on its own as in the video, but instead put on top of a variety of meats and fish.
    4. Torskerogn: ("Bæredygtigt fiskeri" = sustainable fishing). This is the roe of the cod fish. It's really popular here. The ones in cans (like in the video) have been mixed with a couple of other ingredients. The fresh ones are quite different in taste (think canned tuna vs fresh). The two most popular ways to eat it is either out of the can, on top of rye bread, with remoulade or mayonnaise on top... OR, you can cut it into slices and fry it up on the pan and serve as a dinner meal (usually with lemon on, and... remoulade ;) )
    5. Marinerede sild: So basically pickled herring. We have a variety of different kinds - With or without spices, curried herring, with or without onions and pepper, and a bunch of different christmas varieties. Rye bread, butter, picked herring. Yum =) Some eat it only for holidays (and it *is* at all the holidays), but most eat it on regular weekdays as well.
    6. Salte fisk: Yes. Salted licorice. This goes for all candy bags here: If you take a hold of the top of the bag with both hands, and tear down, instead of trying to pull apart, you have a lot less trouble. Danes are absolutely crazy about salted licorice. And salted licorice "bolcher", and salted licorice flavoured gummies, and... you get the picture. Salte fisk is hmm.. Sort of medium on the salty scale. Most of the stronger salty licorices contain "salmiak"(which I *think* is a type of ammonia). We've gotten some kind of special dispensation from the European Union to use the amounts we do, for the licorice (yes, we're insane). Most Danes find sweet licorice kind of boring
Spunk: Comes in two varieties. The one in the video is salty licorice (no surprise there). The other kind is a sort of sweeter fruit type, which is softer and has bright colours.
    8. Frøer: (danish word for "frogs"). The original is with caramel-sauce inside and is the more popular one (by far my favourite). They're dark chocolate, not milk-chocolate.
    9. Snøfler: Oh... yea. These... First off: made-up word. They're a sort-of knock-off of "Rum balls", and are mostly made of cake scraps(from fruit cakes) and fruit marmalade. They don't got baked, you just refrigerate them. They're then covered with milk-chocolate and white chocolate. If you want the "real" stuff, go to a baker and buy Rum balls(cake scraps and "Danishes", cocoa powder, rum or rum essence. Baked and rolled in sprinkles). They are much, MUCH better than snøfler.
    10. Pålægschokolade: Yet another thing to put on top of bread, mostly for breakfast. Either rye or white, and most put butter under them. They're not meant to be eaten as a snack on their own, which is why they're so thin. And they're mostly made with the not-so-good chocolate, to keep price down.
    11. Cocio: Not much to say. We LOVE it here. It's far, far better cold, and don't forget to shake the bottle to get the sediment chocolate mixed in. I don't think I've ever seen anyone drinking it out of glasses before *lol* Most just kind of inhale the whole bottle in one go
Sorry for the wall of text

Liquorice has several varied uses in herbal medicine, such as acting as a mild laxative by increasing prostaglandins.
Comparative studies of pregnant women suggest that excessive amounts of liquorice (100 g a week) may adversely affect both IQ and behaviour traits of offspring.

    A little explanation from a Dane :)
    No. 1 = Flæskesvær = crackling
No. 2 = Rugbrød = Rye bread, can be found in more than 100 different versions, some only with ground grains, others with different sizes for other whole grains.
No. 3 = Økologisk Remulade = Organic, chopped pickled vegetables in mayonnaise with mustard. It is used very often on some open sandwiches, hotdogs, and breaded fried fish fillets. ( it have to be in the refrigerator, as mayonnaise)
No 4. = Torskerogn = The eggs from a cod. It taste better when a slice is fried on a pan, with remoulade and a few drops of lemon juice. And yes, it is like caviar. :) Very healthy :)
No. 5 = Marineret sild = pickled herring. We often drink snaps (aquavit) and bear with it (on rye bread) It taste good, with raw onion rings on the top and maybe curry salad.
No.6 = Salte fisk = soft salty fish. It's a popular Danish licorice.
No. 7 = Spunk = the same as no. 6. But these are hard.
No 8. = Skipper piper = Captains pipe. = normal soft and sweet licorice.
No. 9 = Mini Frøer = small size frogs. It's dark chocolate, the big ones have a sweet filling.
    No 10. = Snøfler = can't be translated. It's small cakes. (I don't like them too.,,,,, hehe )
No. 11 = Pålægs chokolade = Thin slice of chocolate, to put on rye or wheat bread with butter. Milk and dark chocolate.
    No. 12 = Cocio = chocolate milk. :)

It was the name of it in 1977...... i know that the name is a kind of funny today...... even today, there is different names for cakes, depending on where you live in Denmark. And words in Danish can be translated into some wired things in English. A few examples...... in Denmark we have a city called Middelfart, and a street sign with "Fart kontrol"....... the first word can be explained as middle speed....... and the second word is speed control ........ :)

    • @knus1959
      @knus1959 6 років тому +4

lol...... I'm sure that many tourist would find it funny....... :D But there is a lot of answers for why the Scandinavian countries is placed in the top of been happy. I can easily come up with some..... we have a high welfare, social security, free education, low corruption, low crime, a decent salary, and our economy do not have a high inflation. But in the recent years, there have been more and more conflicts because of the big immigration from the middle east, and that has effect our security. We have always had immigration, but not in such a big scale as we see it today. We are a little country area wise, and we are rich in money and have a big heart with a high helpfulness. But we can't handle that massive immigration in a short time. :)

btw remoulade is supposed to go as an accessorie to food, it goes very well with "Torskerogn" and "rugbrød" aswell as Roastbeef and "rugbrød"
"marineret sild" is marinade herring, i think you should try it with fresh onions, i think you will LOVE it :D
also next trime try green package of SPUNKS they have different coloured whitch matches the taste of them :D
the "pålægschokolade" is supposed to be put on "rugbrød" OR "franskbrød" and i THINK you would call "franskbrød" for whitebread :D and the terms for the chocolate is that the "lys" is light chocolate and the "mørk" is dark chocolate :)

Torskerogn is caviar from the cod fish. Fresh caviar is transparent but torskerogn get boiled before packaging and that's why its colour is solid. The text "bæredygtigt fiskeri" on the package translates directly to "sustainably caught" :)
At some fish shops you can get fresh torskerogn and then boil it at home, it requires a bit of work because its skin (the egg sack) is wrinkled like a brain and has to be peeled off before eating.
That the remoulade reminded you of piccalilli is no wonder to me, in my family we refer to it as concentrated remoulade. To us piccalilli is quite strong tasting, but mixed with 1/3 mayonnaise we get a luxury remoulade ;)

Haha this is funny, You're supposed to eat the "Torskerogn" with the "Remoulade". Remoulade is made of different veggies (Pickles, Carrot and cucumber) mayo and curry and it is normally served on r"Rugbrød" with different kind of meat slices. The "Pålægschokolade" isn't a sweet but a piece of chocolate that you are supposed to eat on some bread for breakfest.

Remoulade is a topping that goes on top of the topping on Rye bread, like the codeggs(torskerogn) and prefferably panfry the codeggs first. Season with salt. And the Pålægs-chokolade is a bread topping as well, a little like Nutella, but in firm state 👍

  • @MortenSchultzHunting

    Torskerogn are eggs from cod.
Remoulade is used as topping, like mayonnaise. Would actually be perfect on top of the torskerogn.😁

    Very interesting video, guys!
I am from Romania and live in Denmark. I practically understand the reactions to everything you’ve tasted. I really don’t understand the pleasure of eating salted lakrids. The taste is at least weird for me. You should have tried the Toms Skildpadde chocolate. It is one of the best rum chocolate I have ever tasted! You also missed the bakery stuff, like the “birkes” and many more!
I would gladly watch a similar video with Romanian food! Nice job, you guys!👍

The thin chocolate is not meant to be eaten alone. Its called “chokolade pålæg” and pålæg means I guess something you put on bread. I don’t think there’s an English word for it, and if there is I can’t remember it.

Hey Sliceofmatt , the salty licorice can increase the blood pressure, so it is often used as a "drug" to performe better on examination due to the brain is then working a bit faster. The salty licorice can be compared with coffe when you start eating it, the more you eat it the more you like it.
