Thea: “you gotta let me in. You gotta let someone in.” It took 7 seasons and I rewatched this scene at least 100 times. It just hit me that maybe the reason Oliver told diggle that’s he’s the green arrow because he took theas advice
It's only upon rewatches of early scenes like this one that I realize that while on the surface Thea's actions appear to be those of a self centered, spoiled brat, what's really happening is that she's acting out because she's in pain. She's spent the last 5 years trying to learn to live without her big brother, who'd been there for her all her life, because everyone thought he was dead. And then she gets him back, but he's not the brother she remembers, the one that she lost. He's quieter, and more withdrawn, and he's clearly in ten different kinds of pain but won't let anyone help him. And so she's angry because she feels helpless, because she wants to help Oliver but she can't because he won't let her in.
that's a really good point. thank you for your perspective. I do think that Thea should have been a little bit more careful about what she said to him though. The whole family really needed some training on how to deal with Oliver's state. He doesn't want to talk about it for a reason. He should have been in therapy and they should have been taught how to behave around him.
@@4everbuffylover His family members- and Laurel, for that matter- could have stood to take some lessons from Dig and Felicity about that. They both clearly wanted to know about what had happened to Oliver, but they also saw that he wasn't at a place where he felt like he could talk about it yet, so they both accepted that when he was ready to talk about it, he would, so they left it alone and didn't push him to relive his trauma before he was ready.
@@Ari-el3xl exactly. I mean at this point, he'd only been home a week. After 5 years fighting for his life. Even if they assume he's been alone on an island for five years, that still means he hasn't had contact with anybody and would have trouble making the adjustment. Knowing what we know about what he was actually enduring makes it all so much worse. He probably just really didn't want to talk about all the screwed up things he had to do to survive, partially because of how guilty he feels about them. I kind of think part of the reason he got so close to Digg and Felicity is because they didn't push him. They just accepted him for who he was instead of wanting to get back the old "Ollie Queen".
As an older brother, the last scene hits me hard. I've watched barely any of this show, but I still remember this. I know my sister truly loves and cares about me, and we talk occasionally but we've haven't been close in years now. And its mostly my fault. I feel bad because she's missed out on all those moments and conversations you can only have with your big brother. There are a lot of mental demons I deal with that have made me withdraw. It might be to the point where she thinks I don't care about her, but I do. I have to let someone in, let someone know what's wrong. But I haven't been able to bring myself to do it. I hope someday I can.
Oliver, I know you were marooned on an island, dying, and obviously horribly tortured, but it was even worse for me.... I was looooonely! God I hated how self-centered Thea was in the beginning.

Instead of respecting that, she tells him she felt closer to him when he was "dead". Yep, lets all just tell Oliver that we wish he was dead even though he finally came home after five years. Good plan everybody. It's really no wonder Oliver completely shut off for a while.
Kenton Scott well you can't really blame her she was 12 and she lost her brother and father and she didn't have anyone's support considering her mum stopped talking and Moría found Walter later on.
Maseleine Grey You can blame her because when he gets back, she’s 17. A 17 year old should have at least the slightest social skills to know right from wrong.
And Oliver's completely emotionless response is perfect. Realistic for someone who went through hell on an island, and the purposeful distance because of being the hood. He really cared more about the hood when he came home than family, other than Thea. Edit: After watching the rest of the show, his emotionlessness and reaction to his scars makes even more sense. Dude was tortured for a week in Russia and again the day he was "rescued"!
He never did tell anyone much about his 5 years. I don't think he told anyone about the torture. It seemed like maybe he told Dig about the freighter.
