THIS is WHY tourists in JAMAICA should leave their RESORTS 🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲...

- Join me as I head to Rick's Cafe (a non Jamaican owned popular tourist spot) and also the local crafts market in Negril to highlight the difference in tourist traffic that these two destinations see... Along the way I run into some furious local who are protesting for their basic needs to be met...

I just wanted to add to the comments here because I think I brushed over the severity of the issues being protested against. In the video I said that it was “a shame” but it so much more than JUST a shame… it absolutely DISGUSTING that locals are having to protest for their basics needs to be met. I can BET you that any one of the thousands of hotels which are located ONLY a few meters away are filled to the brim with fresh and clean water for their guests to enjoy. I think this just goes to show how much this island is catered towards tourists and how the locals are treated like SECOND, THIRD and FOURTH class citizens in comparison IN THEIR OWN DAMN COUNTRY.
Additionally, as you can see from the clips, the difference in tourist traffic as I juxtaposed Rick's Cafe with the local crafts market.
Anyways, this is just a few things to think about. I hope you guys enjoyed the video.
LOVE, BLESSINGS AND RESPECT!

I went Jamaica in February this year and I was surprised by how the resorts didn't want me to leave without going in one of there taxis that would take you a shop that was linked to the hotel. A few times I had to tell the hotel staff Im good and just leave the place and go an explore. Just dont be reckless and do things you wouldn't do in your own country. Go and put some money in the locals pockets!
Yesssss!!!
I love to see when people come to Jamaica with this type of respect, and what you're doing is admirable. I definitely rate you. Intelligence, compassion, and obvious inner and outward beauty! Big up!
Thank you for your candid remarks and for your support of the Jamaican people. I’m a Jamaican woman living abroad in the United States. Always appreciate people shedding light on the issues facing Jamaicans. I hope the situation improves for the local vendors soon. I’m planning to visit Jamaica in the summer for 21 days roughly, and I intend to support the local economy as much as possible. I am not staying at a resort because a lot of the reviews basically show that most of the resorts are not even worth the exorbitant cost. I’ll be staying at Travelers Hotel in Negril which is owned by a Jamaican family. I stayed there last year in June 2023. I loved it and it was right on the 7 mile beach. I spent three nights there. Then I’ll go to Montego Bay and stay at an Airbnb. Then I have plans to spend a couple nights in Falmouth, and then about three nights we will be in Ocho Rios. And then from there I’ll be heading to Kingston for a week to stay with my friend. But the whole time I plan to support my Jamaican country men and women. One love.❤❤❤🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
Absolutely love this!!! Thank you for sharing 🤍
You're a real angel Jess. May the Jamaican spirits bless and protect you at all times. Thanks for being you.❤
You're the best simply because you're not a Jamaican 🇯🇲 and is playing such an important part of showcasing the real truth of what is going on in our beautiful Island ✨️ of Jamaica 🇯🇲. May God continue to bless guide and protect you 24/7 and you must always return to Jamaica 🇯🇲 🙏
Super content!!! Just home from 3 months there .. couldn’t ask for a better time .. bless up❤️💛💚
Jess let i say this a lot of people meaning non Jamaicans who come to Jamaica and sell craft stuff and even branded products mark Jamaica which is not authentic fakes. And many of the hotels are link with those businesses. So thats why the original craft people don't get much sale. And our governments are to blame too because they allow and sell out the islands to these people and call it investments
who are the non jamaicans?
@@stevestevens502I believe a lot of Indian people come here to sell inauthentic crafts at cheaper prices to tourists, and maybe Chinese (but I think they are mainly running the supermarkets)…. Correct me if I’m wrong though
@@blessupjess 2 sides to a story. Yes you are right. I am a Jamaican in Canada and my experience over the years visiting back home is that alot of the craft vendors in the market are over charging for their products because they know foreigners generally have a much higher disposable income. They can be harrassing too.🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
Craft vendors pay more for there merchandise. While the Indians and Chinese store holders import souvenirs made abroad and pay no import tax. They also pay the tour buses to take foreigners to their stores bypassing the local stores.😢
@deeblack3313 what about the fruit vendors that sell local produce on the side of the road...they charge more to tourists just because they think tourists can afford it
It is a shame that the Jamaican government allows this to happen. Thank you for showing this video to the world to see what is going on. Tourists need to explore and experience the Jamaican culture. The big fish eating the small fish. DAMN SHAME!!!

Jess, thanks for showing what’s really happening in Jamaica with the locals! Sad situation. Keep exposing the resort hypocrisy.
I agree, this tourist bumping into a protest such as the one she bumped into gave her the insight into some of the problems locals face. Her vlog is about her tourist experience and this has now become part of it. Every visitor needs to know what's happening there.
That guy on the bike was the one that gave us all rides lmao😭😭😭😭
😂😂😂😂 omg bless that’s so funny
JESS THANKS FOR BRINGING TO LIGHT WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE CRAFT MARKET VENDORS, TOURISM NOT BENEFITING THE ORDINARY JAMAICANS.
LOVE & RESPECT!
Instead of said craft vendors getting the support from the government as in funneling the tourists to their locations, places like Rick's cafe is getting all the support. The hotels should not be allowed to have their own craft shops when so many locals depend on that income. They already have enough amenities, they would not be loosing a thing. There has to be a more systemic symbiotic relationship between the locals and these hotels,, mandated by the government.
The Myopic, anachronistic, apathetic "business as usual" way of Jamaican governance really comes down to a lack of backbone.
I really appreciate ur concerns n love for our people respect muma

Thanks Jess for another insightful video. Keep up the great work bringing awareness to everyone.👏🏽🙌🏿💕
This breaks my heart.Jamaica is my favorite island 🙏🏾🫶🏾
It was because of the crime rate in Jamaica for the reason of the many inclusive hotels! Jamaica now many inclusive hotels that the country did not have forty years ago! They can have Jamaican foods and Jamaican drinks at the hotels and take daily excursion outside the hotels if they wishes and most of these hotels has access to the sea as a private along with pools! So the tourist is protected from how Jamaicans lived!
Peace n love to you everytime Jess, no weapon rise again you shall prosper keep on exploring Jamaica and enjoy every moment of it.
Welldone Jess u captured the true essence of what is happening, god bless u jess ❤
Jess i apprecilove what u r doing thank you
Love what you're doing. Keep it up. We need to try and support the local as well. I encourage the tourists to get out and explore the island and mingle with the local. That's the only way to really get to know Jamaica.
Water commission too thief. My house got a bill of over 75k for one month. We don’t have a pool, a garden, nothing. The most water we use is the washing machine and to occasionally put some in the tank for when it’s gone. The next month it was 11 and we didn’t use it any differently. Sadly we still had to pay the cow price.😢 Blocking the road however does nothing, only cause issues for everyone else.
😡😡😡 I’m mad for you gal!!! That’s horrible!!!
I think someone is probably jacking your water - it happens all the time. You can try to call NWC to have them come check it out and shut off illegal connections - if you can get someone on the phone with a better than good chance they will never show up but will lock your water off if you don't pay your bill. I disagree about temporary road blocks though - while it doesn't have an immediate effect it drives the point home to the politicians and NWC officials and most importantly, it makes tourists like Jess aware of this dire situation.
Hi Jess, the news that you ear about the violent , is one word, all inclusive.bless up

Thank your for sharing and showing what going on with the tourist industry
Thank you for talking about this 😮
Boy Jamaica nice but it no level at all
This is the part of my Jamaica I am not particularly proud of. Why can't my brothers and sisters get piped water in 2024?!? The money is there, the manpower is there, the resources are there. There is no reason for Jamaicans to be rioting for basic amenities. This is a reflection of the failings of the political officers.
It’s truly heartbreaking that locals in Jamaica don’t benefit from the tourism. So many tourists travel to Jamaica annually, something is really wrong with the system. The government of Jamaica should set it so that locals benefit a lot more
Many Jamaicans benefit from the tourism industry.
Tourism is one of Jamaica's top sources of revenue.
The industry contributes over 50% of the country's total foreign exchange earnings (approx. US$20). Thousands of Jamaicans work directly or indirectly in tourism.
Tourism employs the second largest number of Jamaicans (approximately 200,000) directly in hotels, transport and attractions and indirectly in trading, manufacturing and banking. Many people in key tourist areas, such as Montego Bay, have benefited from an improved quality of life due to tourism.
This island country is fully equipped when it comes to pampering guests, with five-star hotels offering, luxurious suites, gourmet dining world-class spas, private swimming pools, sailing, scuba diving and much more!
The tourism industry earns over 50 percent of the country's total foreign exchange earnings and provides about one-fourth of all jobs in Jamaica.
Without tourism many people would be struggling, so it’s best not to criticise something that you don’t understand.
@@cleo63100 you are in no position to tell me about how tourism benefits Jamaica. The average worker in a resort makes hardly enough to pay their bills. I have worked in resorts there and pay is based on occupancy. Tourism does benefit the Jamaican economy, I did not say it doesn’t, however more benefits should reach the average Jamaican citizen
@@waitaminute2015 I’ve been thinking the same thing! That would be the solution to the issue for sure! Sadly I don’t see that happening, the government is too corrupt!
@@waitaminute2015 I stand by my comment, she or he is in no position to tell me or anyone for the matter how Jamaicans benefit from tourism. It’s quite evident that the locals do not benefit as much as they should. And what you said about me liking the creator makes no sense, is it the creator who is stating that tourism doesn’t benefit Jamaicans or is she merely highlighting what the public is saying?
On my next trip to Jamaica, I would love to go to this market! ❤
Same thing for the craft Market in montego bay. Tourist don't really go there as well. Its the same info they give tourist island wide in jamaica, to stay away from local buiness places

Love that santa carving
The money needs to trickle down more to the locals

Wonderful place, I love it!!!! Negril is "home" but I try to make at least one road trip there as well. Completely different vibe than Negril.
Who is benefiting from cutting off the main pipe. Who is getting rich off the water?
It's the way for corrupt people to sell water. The people running Jamaica are so corrupt they don't care about their citizens.
We really don't benefit from tourism when you think about it. The hotels are not Jamaican owned. Yes Jamaicans are employed there, but as entertainment and staff. Even all the mining companies are not JA owned. This problem stretches throughout these major sectors of the country. And its effed up.
LOVE THIS VIDEO!!!
😂😂block road don't stop anything!! Except cause irritation to motorist.
It's a start, and it's better than gunshot, also you're talking about it now as a result of this video; cause enough disruption and it will get someone's attention!
@@hotstepper8420great point. Only a person lacking education has no understanding of the power of demonstrations and collective protest!! Has that person never heard of the civil rights movement in the United States? Martin Luther King Junior, and all of his many many protests and disruptions? And many more like him around the world. Protests bring attention to the problem and has the potential to attract more support for the cause resulting in change 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🎤🎤
Yes ... blocking the roads is a big headache..but if you stand at a corner...one's message will just be ignored

@@hotstepper8420 great point!..but why are we speaking on it, pay more attention to who recorded the video? So sad what the hotels are doing to small businesses
Yes they are taking away money from them.
@@eleisha5054 How? The "hotels" are not all big resorts, and the big resorts try to scare their guests about leaving the resort. Each traveler is an individual and can choose to leave the resort and visit any business they want! It's not a prison, lol. Vlogs like this show new tourists where to go and what's fun that might not be on their resort's agenda. Facebook groups even more as there are a wide range of locals and tourists with many years of experience traveling to or living in Negril. You get great turn-ons as to what to see/do as well as reliable trustworthy drivers and guides with whom to do it.
Hey peeps, I'm a Jamaican and I love these contents and will always support. But the same thing is going on in England businesses are suffering and can't figure out why. Sometimes when people leave England and go on a all inclusive is because they don't have time to even travel because too much stress back home. Trust me most people are struggling.
There are some holiday towns in England and they only see people 3 months a year.
Respect 🇯🇲💐🔥
My first visit was in '99 and I remember visiting this craft market with a group I met from the resort. The stairway that's there wasn't and just had to make our way down. You're right about it being overwhelming. 2 years later when I caught the same shuttle it wasn't the same. We were taken to the shops downtown but not the market. Time Square had opened then and that was our last stop. Clearly not Jamaican owned and it showed on the worker's faces. It's so unfair to the local people. I'm more intentional about where I stay and spend now. I'll be sure to share this so people will have better insight about what's really going on.
It is a misunderstanding that these shops are not Jamaican owned - they are. But I get why resorts choose those duty free shops rather than the "crafts" market. My only time there was in either '93 or '94 and I couldn't wait to get out, the vendors were so aggressive! I don't know that it still is over 30 years later but if it was too much for me, an experienced Jamaica visitor - I can see how some from the resorts might complain about it.
Check Portland Jess every one says it’s the nicest part of Jamaica, good job Girl.
Australia is a very Nice place i have learnt about.
Girl you are brave riding on that motorcycle 😢😅
Love it Jess you doing good ❤
Well these craft marketers can sell online all over the world, I saw a lot of items I would like to buy but have no way to, if they could sell them on Amazon these guys would be rich 😮

It's interesting that individuals are upset by these videos when she's merely showing another side of tourism and its impact on the relevant parties (i.e. tourists, vendors, artists). It is important to have different perspectives on topics and issues. Jamaicans need to open up their minds and stop being so quick to look at things so negatively. How else will we be able to address the issues we face if we don't have a holistic understanding of them? We can't keep our head in the sand or turn a blind eye to certain sides of a discussion because it's not fun or nice for the parties involved.
I find that Jamaicans don't like the truth to be told. They want people to think the country is all well and good. When the poor people are going through hell. Look at the water situation that's going on now. 😮
That’s right the hotels should t be be having to want everything of course it’s gona piss of the poorer communities taht live in that country that make a living off the tourism absolute joke

When Kingston was struggling with water. They put in a massive pipe to divert water to Kingston. If money doesn't live in an area(meaning high tax returns for the government), then you don't get the same type of treatment. Outside investors are given preference to collect taxes, for the small vendors are not able to pay taxes to the high level of those businesses. The US soft sanctions in the form of travel advisory do not help the situation either. Streamers like you who show the real issues and not just stigma focused conent will change things slowly. However the reality is money talks, and .............
I never can understand why someone would go to Jamaica and be scared of Jamaicans lol
