    I'm going to pick up an 82 MC9 this weekend, a 1000 miles away from me. I have never driven anything that big, but I have a guy that is going with me, that has been around buses all his life, hopefully by the time we get home, I will have enough confidence to drive it on my own, once he flies back home. It is a Custom Coach with an 8V92 and Allison 5 speed.

    Still one of the best (if not THE best) bus audio clips on the Tube. 😌

    Man, this brings back a lot of memories! I drove coach, commercially, for about a year and a half in my younger days. I drove Eagles, when I worked for Trailways, and then a GMC 4905A when I traveled with a music group traveling all over these United States. We traded that in for an MCI just about like this one! Great video! 😊

    Love the sound of the engines in these things. I'm surprised that there are garages that still are around to work on these things.

    Dude,
    What in the world was making all of the catastrophic noise behind the driver seat?
    I couldn't decide if there was a gorilla, trying to tear itself free from a cage, or a shopping cart full of cement blocks, wandering randomly into whatever fate presented.
    I finally concluded that you had neglected to lash down the refrigerator, and that it had exited the bus through a window. 😯

      Haha 🤣 if I remember it was a bin full of utensils and metal stove pieces - the camera definitely makes it much worse somehow

    I drive for Ambassatours Gray Line in Halifax Canada. We just got a couple 1983 RLM's. I have driven most all of the buses on the fleet including Mercedes Setra, newer MCIs, Artics we got from Alaska and even British Double Deckers. I really like the way the older RLM ones drive especially for tours. Smooth even though they have a 2 cycle engine. Enjoyed the drive with you Ryan.

    Looking at my 1st purchase of a Shell for conversion...would like to hear comparisons on MCI vs Eagles...and the 8V71 vs 6V92...maintenace, weaknesses etc...thnx!

      Tequila Jim unfortunately I've never had the pleasure of checking out an eagle coach so I can't really compare

    • @joeleonard6007
      @joeleonard6007 8 років тому +2

      Get an MCI if possible the 8V71 is a tough engine but the 6V doesnt have the power so slower starting off and most times slower on hills. The Allison automatic by GM in the older ones is a hard trans to beat it is tough. Eagle parts are hard to get also I have found within last year for a customer. The mci parts can be ordered easily if needed. drover both Eagles at Trailways and MCI after i went to Greyhound for another 20 years. Also Motor Coach Industries parts can be ordered online right from MCI 8003231290 or emergency 24/7 8002412947

      @@joeleonard6007 that's not all of the time true.. we had a 83 MC-9 with a 6V92 pushing her with big injectors in it.. I think the injectors was 9290's truck injectors.... man it took off like a j4500 with a 60 series Detroit... Or a vanhool 2045 with a C13 cat or a Cummins M11 plus in it.. an 8V71 couldn't even look at it out the hole nor on a stretch... That bus ran 86 mph too fast!! We sold it.. boy was it right!!!!!!!

    I get the stabbing of the brake pedal to evacuate moisture and kick the compressor, but what's going on with the parking brake at 2:29? Why the off/on?

    • @RyanBottriell
      @RyanBottriell  10 років тому

      The bus had been sitting all winter and the back right drive brake wasn't letting go. I found that putting it on and releasing it a few times was all it needed. You can see me discovering it for the first time in my other video: Stuck Brake on a 1981 MCI MC-9

I have always wanted to try driving one of those coach buses...I used to love the old PMCL with the manual transmissions...I remember watching a guy learning and the gears took such a beating but it sounded like it already had some issues...

      Is that a specific person or do you just mean a mechanic? I do what I can, but am not shy about finding a shop if it's something bigger

    • @dieselgypsy1100
      @dieselgypsy1100 4 роки тому +1

      He's talking about Scot Crosby, the "Bus Grease Monkey". He is a mobile mechanic who specializes in old and antique coaches. He will also work on any other pre-electronic Detroit diesels.
      He has a UA-cam channel and a website/BBS. Lots of information on both of them!

  • @w5pda
    @w5pda 8 років тому +1

    Out of curiosity, why didn't you run the fast idle while it was in neutral? Older Jimmies have a history of oil pressure problems at low idle.

    • @RyanBottriell
      @RyanBottriell  8 років тому +1

      well most of the beginning I'm waiting for the suit to build, and you can't engage high idle until it's fully aired up

    • @cidertom5140
      @cidertom5140 3 роки тому

      Ryan Bottriell did you have to go t a tailors for the suit you be made or built up?

    • @thud9797
      @thud9797 3 роки тому

      Not aware of any oil pressure issues, the purpose of the fast idle is for alternator output when running the air conditioner. .

    THIS YOUR MOTORHOME OR TOUR BUS DOES NEED HAVE A CDL TO DRIVE IT ?

    • @RyanBottriell
      @RyanBottriell  10 років тому +1

      Technically all you need is an air brake endorsement but I have my CDL (class A in Ontario) and I recommend it for a vehicle like this... better to know what you're dealing with so that you can spot and avoid problems.

    • @thomasjsanford6296
      @thomasjsanford6296 9 років тому +1

      ZAY BROWN Here in the USA, you would only need the CDL if you were driving the Coach as a Tour Bus (For Hire), not if you were using it as a Motorhome (Private Coach)
      ... but I agree that having the CDL means you are more knowledgeable about the coach, and what special talents you need to drive such a large vehicle safely...Some of the elderly men who drive 40k ## motorhomes into our campground are really scary !!

    • @isaiahbrown7854
      @isaiahbrown7854 9 років тому

      Yes I do argee with you too... thank you for comment to me.

    • @isaiahbrown7854
      @isaiahbrown7854 9 років тому

      I have a question for you.. how long do your bus can hold full tank until finally refill the tank ? And how many miles in a full tank of fuel ?

    • @thomasjsanford6296
      @thomasjsanford6296 9 років тому

      ZAY BROWN I don't know about Ryan's bus specifically, but MCI usually build this model (MC-9) with either a 144 gallon or 170 gallon tank. Larger tanks (either from newer MCI models or aftermarket...) are sometimes fitted to an MC-9. Depending on your driving style, weight, etc.. you should get anywhere between 6 and 10 mpg...
