How do you propose and enact change for the better when the odds are stacked against you? Karen Ellenbecker, host of the radio show, Money Sense and founder of the Ellenbecker Investment Group, shared her journey into the financial industry and how she disrupted the entire industry's commission-based model and started her own fee-based firm. The challenges she faced as a single mother in a male-dominated industry were not easy, but she persevered and turned those obstacles into opportunities. It's heartening to see how positive disruption can lead to lasting change and inspire others to follow their own paths.

Growing up in a rural area with limited access to libraries, I always felt deprived of educational resources. However, when a mobile library started visiting our community, it was a disruptive change that opened up a whole new world of knowledge. The experience of browsing through books, attending storytelling sessions, and interacting with fellow readers transformed my perspective. That's the best example I have of what Karen is talking about here!

We are constantly being challenged to ask ourselves do we align with our values in the midst of what is being asked of us, family, work, social. Sometimes it is little things that are not necessarily illegal but just don’t land right on us. These small seemingly insignificant challenges are the hardest to push back on. If you can stay true to your why and your values these challenges form a deep root system that will continue to guide you and draw the people into your life that are like minded and strong leaders and thinkers .

I love the way she went about doing her seminars, it's like instead of saying 'being a woman in this industry is my weakness' she reconfigured how to do business in a way where being a woman was her strength and that is incredible

Every woman I know has felt diminished in a male-dominated industry. Hearing how she then launched her own fee-based firm is very special.

Transitioning from commissions to a fee-based model isn't just a business move; it's a moral compass pointing towards ethical financial practices! Ya love to see it

I wonder how many others out there are facing similar struggles but don't know how to disrupt positively. This talk makes me want to help others find their way too!

The radio show - a rollercoaster of self-doubt turned into a platform for genuine education and connection with listeners, pretty incredible.

I can relate to the fear of not being 'smart' or 'polished' enough. The reminder to focus on serving others rather than self-doubt is golden.

Dang, the struggle of feeling humiliated as the only woman in the pit hits hard. But turning that around with public seminars is such a power move! I'll bet that earnt her a lot of respect.

Her shift from commission-based to fee-based services is really important. I think it shows very ethical business practice on her behalf.

It is difficult to understand why the financial industry has not changed the way it does business today, they incorporated fee base services into their business along with commission products but generally at a higher cost to clients.

Sometimes in the moment it feels scary and more disruptive to your own security but for me I have found that there are more people watching be it your family, friends, work associates or community your willingness to stand true to your values gives them the strength to push back, and bridge the gap between their fear and holding the space to align with their values…
