I always know that once I get to a radius of 5.25-5.75 I need to stop the increases to fit a 21-22" head size. 81 is huge in my hat world. I keep all my hat to 60ish stitches when using a 5 or 5.5mm hook size with a 4 weight yarn. I have been making hats for years. Everybody crochets at a different tension so it varies depending on how you crochet. It took me a while to learn what radius I needed to stop my increases at in order to make a hat that fit a standard adult woman's head.
