Looks great! Totes are so useful for large project boxes. In fact, just this year I purchased a large skull archway and wanted to make it much taller and more imposing, plus keep it stable and keep some large floorstanding 70s era speakers dry in Southern Ontario weather. So I used two totes, put the 50 pound speakers in each one and dressed them up to look like boulders. I also use them as covers for large electronic projects I make (magic treasure chests) so that I can set them up and leave them without worrying too much about light rain and squirrels or mice deciding to make a home inside when no humans are around. And one great video deserves a (hopefully) helpful tip: there is no need to use scissors to cut Gorilla Tape. It's a small tip, but you can save the extra step as Gorilla tape tears very cleanly and easily to even 1" strips.
I used to have a very simple rig that sprayed liquid nitrogen from a 160 liter tank into the smoke stream. THAT was some low-lying fog!. Nice work! Great DIY project.
That fog machine is top quality. That’s the main reason why it works so well. That’s not a fog machine Walmart or a Halloween store is going to have in stock. I have a Chauvet Hurricane bubble haze machine that works continuously with a 100% duty cycle. That machine is incredible the only time it pauses if I have to refill the bubble or fog juice! I use it with a giant spider display that spits out fog filled bubbles and it performs amazingly. I also have a fogger I bought from the Spirit Halloween store years ago and it has to cycle constantly. So I think I’m going to use that lesser one in my headless horseman display maybe have the head and horse spewing fog 😂 but I’ll have to figure it out to time it with the animatronics I’m not sure I have that capability 😂😂😂😂
Great job. I had used a cooler with dry ice for years and always have been very disappointed in its performance, or lack of it. This year I am going to try the ultrasonic mister version. Don’t think about adding another chiller as a second stage. I will keep that in the back of my mind if the mister doesn’t do as well.
You're amazing. Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into making this video. This is, by far, the most informative DIY low lying fog chiller tutorial on the internet.
Thanks, it really creates an awesome effect. Now, if we can just do something about the damn wind. It completely ruins the effect when it’s windy. I do not run my set up when it’s windy outside.
I am actually building this today. Thank you for the great idea. The only thing I am doing different it put frozen bottle in the pond mister cooler to chill the water. Gonna see how that works so I don't need 2 coolers
Wow. What a great setup and an excellent tutorial video with great detail. I'm going to incorporate a lot of this into a fog generating mausoleum table for next year so I'm not so wind dependent. 😊 One thought hit my head while watching this though. Have you tried reversing your cooler around? Since cold air/fog sinks, I would think you'd want the fog coming out of the bottom of your cooler and coming into the top. It might not make any difference, but it would be really easy to try with your setup.
Thank you, I am located in Southern California, we average in the mid 70s during spooky season. We had a few windy nights, I do not run my fog and laser set up when it’s windy. The wind ruins the effect.
Can you add a link to how to build your cooler? I searched your videos and couldn't find it. I agree about not using direct flow chiller like other videos, your idea makes the most sense to maximize chilling the fog. I think a cooler is necessary as another video bypassed the cooler concept and used a bilge pump but it fails every season due to excess moisture on an electrical fan. Thank you for the diy fog liquid. Very helpful. I love the idea of using a large tote to store everything in one case. I agree with the dyna mister vs the vevo because it has a low water sensor. Your video by far is the most comprehensive tutorial to get maximum low lying fog without having to replace equipment every year.
@@vinhnguyen592 thank you, I built the cooler about three years ago, so I did not film that build. That was the first thing I tried before I came up with the pond mister combination. It is basically the same thing as the pond mister tote build. Follow that video build and add one more flange on the inside of the cooler for the pipe facing up.
Great effect! How beneficial is the ultrasonic pond mister? What happens if you omit it? What about omitting the fog machine? Also, if you wanted to have the pipe be a bit sturdier you could cut many shorter slits with some inches of pipe between them. Your distribution looks pretty even, but if you needed to you could stack multiple slits at the end of the run and have less closer to the machine to allow more fog to get to the end of the runs.
It really depends on your situation, space you want to cover, and how are you going to get the fog out to the area of distribution. I tried all different combinations as you suggested. This was the best results for my situation.
Amazing instructions and amazing effects. So well done! Thank you for sharing. I have some corrugated hose leftover from my rain barrel set up... I built the cooler for the frozen bottles of water three years ago. I did not make a video on that. But, follow the video for the pond mister tote, it’s the same thing, you just add one more flange on the inside forthe up pipe.
Totally awesome! Thank you for the instructions and directions, mistakes and all. I am going to try a smaller version of your swamp in the foyer of my NYC apartment building. We are only allowed to decorate on Halloween, so we only need it for one night…. If you have any ideas that are different than scaling it down I’d appreciate it. Once again it’s Fanterriffic!
@@ReginaHawkins yes, you can try using just the ice chest with the frozen bottles of water and have the fog machine blow directly into the ice chest. Drill two 4” holes towards the bottom of the ice chest for the toilet flanges. Use one toilet flange on one side of the ice chest to connect the fog machine pipe to blow into, then use two toilet flanges on the other side of the ice chest, one pointing inside and one pointing outside. Look at the video where I attach a pipe, pointing up in the cooler to force the fog to go through all the frozen bottles of water and then goes down that pipe and out to your Pipe in the yard. Also, keep in mind, that if it’s windy outside, it ruins the effect, Hopefully it will not be a windy night on Halloween. 🎃
Hello and thank you for the amazing video! I have two fog machines. ADJ mister kool II and Tcfundy 1500. Both are low lay fog machines that require ice or dry ice. The fog comes out towards the bottom from a long horizontal opening. Do you have a recommendation on how I can trap the fog coming out as the 3in pvc won’t catch all the fog? Also, the fog is already chilled from the machine. Should I still chill it again after the mist section? I am mind boggled that the fog still moves without a fan!?! Exited to recreate your project. Thank you
I also have the ADJ mister kool II. That was the very first fog machine I purchased. I too tried to figure out how to trap that long fog coming out of the mister Kool, but I never figured it out, so I just came up with this system I use now.
I cant seem to find the same fog machine with the 3 knobs only 2. i have 5 fog machines right now but want to do a setup like this for the graveyard part of our display.. I appreciate your rundown of the vids. Do you think an inline fan would be worth it? Also where to buy the plugs for all the extension cords ? Appreciate it..
Hi, click the more on my description. I included links to the products I used in the video, including the fog machine with the three knobs. There is even a discount code for the plug shield plug gaskets. Let me know if you have trouble finding the links. I am not using any in line fans. Thanks
Freakin awesome job! Did I miss something or is there no fan to help the fog go this really long distance? And where did you get that black pipe? I don't see it in Home Depot
No fans used. My Home Depot has the black pipe in the same section as the PVC pipe. Check the section where they have all the sewer and drainage pipe. The black pipe is ABS pipe. Just ask an employee where the black sewer pipe or ABS pipe is.
By far the best fog machine tutorial I’ve seen! Thank you! Can I ask, how often do you need to fill the fog machine up with fluid? I’m trying to figure out how much I need to buy, so any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated!
I run my light show for 4 hours per evening. I will blast the fog for about 10 seconds, at 15 minute intervals. I go through one tank, which is approximately 3/4 of a gallon. I do not run my low lying fog on windy nights, because it ruins the effect. I make my own fog juice for less than $8 a gallon. Here is the video for the recipe. DIY - Low Lying Fog Juice Recipe, for less than $8.00 per Gallon ua-cam.com/video/muLJCHP--kQ/v-deo.html
Thank you for going through your process, I really appreciate it. I do have a question about the fog juice. I just finished my setup with all of this about a week ago and been using bog fog for my juice. The challenge I am having is the green lasers (I am running 2) actually cutting through the fog to create the desired effect. I know you use your own fog juice so I was wondering is your mixture less dense than bog fog and is that why it is able to create more of a light "swamp" effect?
I don’t know what ratio the bog fog mix is, I just played around with different ratios and this is the best formula that works for me and the formula that is used in the video is my recipe
This is awesome. Thanks for sharing this very helpful insight into your setup! I'm curious about one thing: how long do your frozen water bottles last in this setup? How often do they need replacing?
I run my light show for approximately 4.5 hours every evening. I put the frozen bottles in about 20 minutes before the show starts, I take them out after the show ends every evening. The bottles are still partly frozen when I take them out. I put them back in the freezer for the next day.
Also, what lasers are you using? I do a laser tripwire maze and I am always looking for options for the even that I can't get replacements for the ones I have should they burn out. Lastly, your project is epic, thanks for sharing!
I live in Southern California, in the San Fernando Valley. It gets very hot in the summer. We’ve had triple digits already in October this year. This week looks like it’s finally going to cool down a bit, around the high 80s
@@diylightguy how long does it cling to the floor in that temp humidity? i live in florida and its way too hot on halloween to get it ito stay to the floor i may tray this next year thanks
The double set up is definitely better, the pond mister actually heats up the water to create the mist so putting bottles of water in the tub with the mister would counteract it, plus, you would have to take the fog machine off and unstrap the tote to keep changing out bottles of water or ice, which would melt quickly. Much easier to just change out frozen bottles of water in the second cooler.
Do you have any issues with backdrafts? Whenever my fogger cycles off, the fog comes back up through the intake pipe. Just wondering if you've had any issues with this.
Great setup and video. I’m a little confused why the mister step *and* the cooling step? Most people just do the latter. You said the mister makes it more dense. Is it a really significant difference from doing the cooling step only? Thanks
It depends on the size of your yard, in my situation, it will roll down the slope, a little bit, but not going the street. The only thing that really ruins the effect is wind. I do not run my fog system on the windy nights.
It looks great, I love the effect. Do you contain the fog at all or just let it drift off? I wanted to do something similar but I was going to try to fence it in with cling wrap or something
That would be cool with cling wrap or something else. I kind of let it drift off. It does kind of stay contained in the front area because it is lower. You will see, I have to step up on the brick border to the steps to the front door
@@diylightguy I ended up getting a silt fence (cutting it down to a reasonable size) and putting it around the area and it works great at containing fog IF the wind doesn't just carry it away. ty again for the inspiration.
Have you tried just using ice water in the mister box and removing the ice chest? Instead of putting the frozen water bottles in the ice chest, just put them in the water. Im about to do this setup, but was wondering if i could make it a little smaller by removing the ice chest.
@@MatthewSalathe I have not tried that, but the ultrasonic pond mister heats up the water as it’s creating the mist. So I think the ice would melt pretty fast. I’m curious to see how it comes out. Let me know.
Yes, I started out with just the cooler, then I tried just the mister, both separately worked OK, but when I added both together, it was a game changer
@@SvenBrekhofEriksson that’s a good question, I put my hand over the fog as it was coming out. It didn’t feel wet to me. It just felt cold. You would have to test it out. I am curious what you find out.
Did you try it with just the smoke machine to see if the pond mister and cold water bottles added anything to the system? Seems like it would work great without them, but would love to see the difference if you have the time
@@MrMoosefire yes, the key to low lying fog is to make the fog as wet and dense and cold as possible. The colder and wetter you can make the fog, the lower it will stay and the longer it will stay on the ground. I tried just the fog machine, the fog machine with the icebox full of frozen bottles of water, and the fog machine with just the pond Mister. The fog machine alone just spread fog all over the place. It was nowhere near the ground because it was too hot coming out of the fog machine. The fog machine through the cooler with the frozen bottles of water helped, the fog stayed low for a short time, then started lifting up as the fog warmed up. The fog machine going into the tote with just the pond mister, was about the same as with just the cooler with the frozen bottles of water. The combination of the two, was a game changer! That is what you see in the video.
You leave out some things on your list such as what power supply you used. For those of use who are not familiar with these, it was frustrating trying to order one. You also leave out the fittings and couplings needed for cooler. I ordered your list and when I went to build I did not have the cooler parts and had to go back to store. For me it’s quite a drive. I didn't watch full video until I had the parts you listed so partly my fault. I just wish I had complete list to start. Building today. Thank you for the tutorial.
The mister comes with the power supply. I built the ice chest about three years ago. It’s basically the same parts as the tote. I did not film myself building the cooler. Sorry I missed those parts in the very beginning. That video was just for the tote build, I should’ve mentioned them for the cooler also.
Oops, I forgot to mention that. It is an expandable 1“ x 1“ weatherstripping. I purchased it from Home Depot. I show a picture of the weatherstripping in the beginning of the video with all the parts laid out on the table.
You've got to be kidding! Thebgreat secrets of youtube! Thank you, that is why I decided to do these videos. I Couldn’t find what I was looking for on UA-cam so I figured it out myself, and wanted to share what I learned
Yes, I make my own fog juice for less than eight dollars a gallon. I posted a video of the recipe on my channel, here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/muLJCHP--kQ/v-deo.htmlsi=po2UIeEcagHg0dSV
Look in the pond and fountain aisle for fittings there should be a 2” reverse thread fitting with a plastic and a rubber washer and nut as a set. Rubber washer goes to the water side plastic outside…
I did a demo and built your contraption but it didn't work well for me... I'm guessing it's my Fog machine I'm using (Cheap one from Amazingly). The fog did come out thick from the PVC pipe, but it didn't roll out much... Didn't give the laser a chance to do its thing :(
That should work. The only reason why I used 3” pipe, was because that was the size of the toilet flange, so was easy to connect without using reducers.

Do you have any issues with backdrafts? Whenever my fogger cycles off, the fog comes back up through the intake pipe. Just wondering if you've had any issues with this.
Very little, but not to be concerned about
just put some pvc glue in the cap, slip it on the pipe then drive a wedge into the slit you cut to expand the pipe back to size. its not ruined.
@@face_in_the_crowd that’s a great idea! Thanks
May I ask how many quarts your cooler is?
I’m not sure, I bought it three years ago. I do know that it will hold 40 Kirkland frozen bottles of water. So I’m guessing it’s about 25 quarts.
Great setup and video. I’m a little confused why the mister step *and* the cooling step? Most people just do the latter. You said the mister makes it more dense. Is it a really significant difference from doing the cooling step only? Thanks
@@chadtarver1522 both by themselves will work. I tried them both separately and for my situation, this was the best set up for me.
My yard is bigger, I wonder if two units would be needed. Do you notice the fog going into the street for a ways?
@@UndeadLaboratory that’s a great idea! I’m glad it worked out for you. Yes, the wind sucks.
What kind of pipe did you use? PVC?
@@dpking1s 3 inch ABS black pipe
Have you tried just using ice water in the mister box and removing the ice chest? Instead of putting the frozen water bottles in the ice chest, just put them in the water. Im about to do this setup, but was wondering if i could make it a little smaller by removing the ice chest.
@@MatthewSalathe I have not tried that, but the ultrasonic pond mister heats up the water as it’s creating the mist. So I think the ice would melt pretty fast. I’m curious to see how it comes out. Let me know.
Did you notice a big difference combining the cooler and the mister instead of just using one or the other?
Yes, I started out with just the cooler, then I tried just the mister, both separately worked OK, but when I added both together, it was a game changer
How would it be if you only used frozen water bottles & no water misters?
I tried all different combinations, this is what worked best for my situation
@diylightguy love your set-up
Would this work on a stage indoor or does the Pond Mister make the fog to wet?
@@SvenBrekhofEriksson that’s a good question, I put my hand over the fog as it was coming out. It didn’t feel wet to me. It just felt cold. You would have to test it out. I am curious what you find out.
Do you have a link for the cooler? It looks like it a perfect fit.
Sorry, I do not. I purchased that two years ago at Walmart. I can take measurements of it for you if you would like.
@@diylightguyhow many quarts is the cooler? Thank you!
@@diylightguy thank you for the explanation!
Can we get more info about the weather stripping? You didn't mention it in the parts used list in the description.
Oops, I forgot to mention that. It is an expandable 1“ x 1“ weatherstripping. I purchased it from Home Depot. I show a picture of the weatherstripping in the beginning of the video with all the parts laid out on the table.
@@diylightguy yep I saw that, but went looking for the link. Thanks
You've got to be kidding! Thebgreat secrets of youtube! I have beenblooking for this kind of info since i was 13 and hanging 20 pound pumpkins from a tree with fishing line and threaded rod to make them lookblike they were floating. That black silk line was a complete game changer. This would be hidden in a bail of hay on top of a 1.5 acre hill... alas, my parents have moved from there, and im 39 years old now.
Thank you, that is why I decided to do these videos. I Couldn’t find what I was looking for on UA-cam so I figured it out myself, and wanted to share what I learned
Did you drill the screw holes immediately after caulking while it was still wet? Messy?
Yes, it wasn’t that bad. It was the only way I knew that everything would line up perfectly with the holes and the screws.
Any fog juice recommendations? I have that same brand fogged but ours is a bubble fogger.
Yes, I make my own fog juice for less than eight dollars a gallon. I posted a video of the recipe on my channel, here is the link:

@@diylightguy This is the way to go
I know you said you used 3" pipe, do you think 2" pipe would work? Much cheaper than 3 "
It should work, I used 3" because that was the size of the toilet flange I was putting the pipe into
Look in the pond and fountain aisle for fittings there should be a 2” reverse thread fitting with a plastic and a rubber washer and nut as a set. Rubber washer goes to the water side plastic outside…
Silly question but what is the power supply for? I'm looking for a fix for my lights dimming from the fog machine running. Will this help
The aluminum power supply you see next to the fog machine is for the ultrasonic pond mister in the tote below the fog machine
I did a demo and built your contraption but it didn't work well for me... I'm guessing it's my Fog machine I'm using (Cheap one from Amazingly).
The fog did come out thick from the PVC pipe, but it didn't roll out much... Didn't give the laser a chance to do its thing :(
It's important to get a good quality fog machine.
What about using dry ice. Anyone forsee issues with that?
Nope, a lot of people use dry ice. I just use frozen bottles of water instead, because it’s less expensive than purchasing dry ice every evening.
Was für nebelmaschine ist das genau?
There is a list with links to all the parts I used in the description of the video
i have 50mm pipes, is that a problem?
That should work. The only reason why I used 3” pipe, was because that was the size of the toilet flange, so was easy to connect without using reducers.
