We use stackable plastic containers. Makes it easier when we go camping. We just grab them. Never broke one and very light weight. Then, for normal use, I pull them out.
I was thinking of doing something similar. If you don’t mind me asking, which drawers did you buy and where from? Thanks.

Then used a strap and my cargo barrier to keep them from slipping with hockey straps
Ditto for me. I use 1x heavy duty 80l black container from Bunnings, plus a couple of transparent 60l Systema containers. (Nice when you can see from outside where everything is in the box). At camp, we only remove 1 or 2 from the car. Even if it stays out in the rain, it's 100% waterproof. It's super light. The downside is that I have to tighten the ratchet straps before setting off, but having the flexibility of an empty, light car between trips is great. My fridge sits on a slider, which stays in the car (LWB Pajero)

this is something I had already concluded a long long time ago. I even bought a 4x4 with already installed drawers and going from my previous 4x4 that didn't have drawers I noticed a massive loss in versatility.
upon removal of the drawers I not only gained more internal space and versatility but I also loss significant unnecessary weight.
Built my drawers, cost $200 and they do not limit my flexibility in any way.
They make a lot of sense

Yes I can sleep in the back of my gu patrol by tumbling the rear seat forward and placing carpeted inserts over them that create one long continuous flat area
You can also remove the rear seats and create even more storage
I’ve found flexibility is king when you want a multi purpose vehicle
I've got a car trunk organizer, one of the ones for minivans or family vehicles.
The large pockets and side pockets are fantastic, it's a durable fabric, has an insulated cooler pocket with a zipper.
I keep my ropes and shackles in one large spot, tools, flares, deflator, stuff like that, in the center area, and in the third, my survival stuff, water bottles, food rations, blanket, spare set of clothes, things like that.
It's also got large handles on each side, so i can quickly remove it if i need the cargo space for a day. Would recommend checking them out, like honestly, I'm pretty happy with it. It's also extremely light weight. No real added weight to the vehicle, easily removable.
My build out was more akin to backpacking, keep it lite but flexible to my changing needs. Nothing is permanent except the platform bed I built inside, always keep evolving to what works best.
Just two low down drawers make sense.. it’s all the fridge surrounds and extra drawers ontop that affect it. Just run two slim drawers on the bottom and on the top surface run those aircraft anchors to tie stuff down.
The pull out cooking, fridge freezer and sink system from ARB is fantastic and there is enough space for one person to sleep beside the system. Two people can still travel if you put a pop up tent on top of the vehicle.
I’ve just got plastic tubs and a few Aldi canvas/cleartop bags. Weighs bugger all and does what I need. My fridge is in the back behind the seat (23 dmax extra cab) which is a little awkward at times but I can live with that.
I agree with this 100%. I had a heavy drawer system for a while and removed it. Carried less than a large plastic case and took up more room. And I can remove the case to free up space at camp if I wanted to collect firewood or just needed to use the tub in general
Yes! I learned this lesson too. Started with a welded frame covered in birchwood then marine carpet, etc. While I loved it for its ability to sleep inside my cruiser, my cruiser is used differently daily. I sold the drawers, reinstalled the fridge on the floor, and purchased a trailer for overnight trips.
I have a 150 prado and same didn't want drawers. So I removed 3rd row seats, had a box made up to fit in. same height as 2nd row seats when folded. So totally flat floor all the way thru . Lid on drivers side. About 170mm height storage. I keep tools ,recovery gear, bit's and pieces in there . Fridge on passenger side , no slide just tied down ,all other gear in storage boxes. When not camping ,towing van fridge out storage boxes out flat floor . Or 2nd row seats up 5 seater . BTW had car mod plated to 5 seater. Works for me😊
Rather than have a full on dedicated drawer and canopy or whatever. Have smart storage for essentials like recovery gear and tools. After that refine your camping gear. Go on a few overnight hikes where you need to carry all your shit. This way, you will learn real fast what you don’t need. You will soon end up with an awning, a tent, a fridge and a few camp chairs and that’s about it.
I made my own from 3/4 plywood. They fit perfectly, keep the "always with" stuff neatly sorted, and hide the house batteries behind the back seat. The whole thing is held down with two turnbuckles and easy to remove. Maybe some day I'll make a new set from aluminum, but for now...
I really don't see the issue.
I have a Troopy. The better half has a 79 series single cab/tray. The reason being, we can chuck our dirt bikes and all of the riding gear, part's, tool's and such in the back. We would take a large-ish tent and set up camp. Less than ideal. Draw systems would take up far too much space.
Then, my better half suggested I purchase a bike trailer.
We chatted about options and ended up purchasing a second hand off road camper trailer with all of the fruit for a very good price.
The better half is thrilled, the trailer is basically a one room mini home on wheels. Yeah, we use more fuel but, having a hot shower after trail riding? Well worth it.
What brand trailer did you get?
@@V8LC100 A G.I.C. soft top. It had been modified by the previous owners. Stainless steel kitchen with hot and cold water, large two chamber, stainless steel water tank, twin batteries, shower. 4 Jerry can & two gas bottle rack's, lockable. Huge aluminium tool bin. Two spare tires.
With indy suspension and dual shock's standard, it handles the trails really well. The guy said it was not the best finish quality when new, so he repainted it with LineX and replaced the tour cover with a much better quality cover. My gain, I guess, having all of the problems sorted by him before I got it.
He did not give G.I.C a very good rap for their poor quality control, but, I still bought it and glad I did.
I keep milk crates in the back of my canopy.
Yer. I use boxes. Plastic boxes. Sure it takes ten mintues to get everything out at the camp site.
But i then have an empty boot.
What do you put in that boot?
Removable plastic wide drawers from B&Q or Bunnings , they are interchangeable , super light and work!
I only run 1 drawer and I refuse to get more, it’s only for the important stuff that Ives in the car. Spare parts, tools, compressor and recovery gear, gu patrol pushing 20 years old even if I’m not “on tour” they’re items I’m not leaving home without.
I've built my own setup for my 80 series. If you build them right you shouldn't have to remove them, build them to suit your needs.

Can you quickly turf stuff out on the ground/ move the fridge to the front seat and sleep in the back at short notice ? If not, you are not doing it right. This is a wagon. You could add a flase floor and put much or your gear under it.
If the weather is really bad, or crashing out behind the pub, you will want to unroll your sway inside the back. Tooftop tents are not the way to go.
By definition, you should be able to sleep in the back of a wagon.

It's basically a kitchen in a box, that can self stand or stay partly in the back. Fully removable
I haven't put drawers in, we use heavy duty crates that I can easily take in and out, plus my drawers could end up a disorganised mess with five of us using them.
Isn't the "mess by 5 people" applicable to boxes/crates too?
Milwaukee packouts .. absolute game changer and I’m not sure why more good 4x4 channels don’t get on it . But I suppose the draw companies sponsor them

I've thought of it but just use some totes that are pretty low the under the bed style but not the long ones. Like $7 sterilite totes I've had for almost 20 years now. They hold up well enough, stack, and I have each one labeled so I can grab the cookware and such at a glance, I have one as Kitchen one as Camp, and one as Food. Are they as cool as some $100 cases? No. Do I care? No. They are light and easy, can be stacked however with other gear depending on the loadout that changes with the seasons. And my rig takes me to and from work empty all week.
2 draws at the bottom are good, but the setups where people go wild with their draws is over the top.
i put drawers in and its probably my biggest regret. You lose flexibility, and if you utilize a campsite that is away from your car..well have fun moving your items by piece meal. Only upside is security from theft.
This is what I realised myself when I was trying to figure out what I wanted for my 4B, in the end too permanent, too much money and extra weight. I initially thought that’s what I wanted but it wasn’t
I always travelled light. Drawers = weight too.
I built draws in my hj60. I had tools and things in them daily. And camping gear went on top of draws. Still plenty of room. But each to their own. Same as some people love roof top tents and some hate them.
Low profile draws just to put some stuff in but yeah mostly not necessarily necessary
You also said you were never going to tell the 79 and that happened
I use plastic totes. Molle panels for essentials (for me) that will always be with the truck.
I just pulled the totes out and put a large dog crate in the back to transport some roosters.
This is why we utilise the pack out range I use it for camping and work and it all locks in like draws and can be swapped quickly
I only got rear draws for the in cab bed it was ultimate! seats fold down and there room for a double mattress
100% agree. Drawers are for OCD people. My truck looks messy because stuff is not put away in drawers, but it is just as organized- everything has a place and everything goes back after it comes out. Carrying a mountain bike inside makes them a no go anyway.
Spent 15k on drawers from odyssey custom fitouts. Best thing I've ever done
I fitted drawers once. Home made, but still not cheap, or light, or flexible.
I persisted for 6 months, but they had to go.
I built my own draws, I built two sets of draws. One set filled with camping gear the other set with work gear. Coke camping time just slip one set out and the other in. Ready to go in 30 minutes
That's why I decided to go with the milwaukee toolbox drawers.
I moved to Milwaukee pack outs and never looked back
I’ve gone back to draws😅 I got so sick of opening wet lids, it’s as bad as emptying the dishwasher and having water spill on ya socks!
I don't have drawers, we're already packed to the max going on family camping trips. Draws take up unnecessary tetris-ing space and I'm probably over GVM already as it is.
A single guy travelling around light though - they'd be perfect!
A single guy trevlling around in a wagon should be able to sleep in the back. It is a wagon.
It sounds a bit like you have to put a full system in or have nothing. If you check back what you have used all the time, one or two drawers might be the perfect compromise , mightn't it?
