Hey! More precisely, you have to grease it every 5000km, if you do lots of offroad then more often, like 2500km. To do it correctly, for the nipples on top with wheels on the ground, for the nipples on bottom with vehicle jacked up, so there is no weight on the kingpin. This way the grease can spread better where it is needed. This is the official reccomendation from Mercedes ;)
Thanks Dave, that’s appreciated. There are grease nipples on some of the prop shafts fitted to some Varios, mine doesn’t have them, it’s 1999. I use aerosol copper grease on the gear linkage plus a few other places, would a video be helpful 😀?
@@richstuff6300 It certainly would be helpful. I’ve just bought an 814 with the om904 engine. I don’t know my way around these vehicles at all so any pointers are useful.
Great vids Rich. I have a 1988 811d, horsebox now camper. What grease do you use in this vid? Also, have you ever changed the master cylinder in the clutch pedal? Would be useful to see how you did it, if poss. Cheers.
I’ve used a general purpose high melting point grease, also consider a comment from one of my subscribers to Jack up the wheel to take the weight off the joint before greasing, makes sense to me. I’ve not done a master cylinder on my Vario, on other vehicles it’s been easy for me. I’ve always measured / noted the adjustment before removal and used that as the starting point for the new part. Thanks for your comment, I’m planning a couple of new videos consider subscribing and clicking for notifications, you’ll get an email when I upload. Cheers Rich
There seems to be quite a variety based on the age of the vehicle, for example some have a grease nipples on the prop shaft but mine does not, some have a nipple on the gear linkage but I can't see one on mine. They all seem to have the steering joint nipples and that's vital.
Hi Ian, I’m actually not 100% sure if it’s ATF or EP90, sorry. I will look at my book and let you know, I may do a short video showing how to check the level. My rear diff is EP90 for sure.

Thanks so much your information is valuable, I can understand the reasoning. Thanks again.
Very helpful video. Are there any other grease points on the vario’s (I.e. propshaft or steering linkages) which also require greasing?

Hi Rich I have a 1996 Mercedes t2 711d. Do all these type of vehicles have grease Nipples roughly in the same place ?
