Im Abendrot is an art song by Franz Schubert for voice with piano accompaniment in A flat major D 799. It was composed in 1825 and published posthumously in 1832. The text is based on the poem of the same name by Karl Lappe, which was published in 1818 in the Zeitung für die elegante Welt by Leopold Voß.

O wie schön ist deine Welt,
Vater, wenn sie golden strahlet!
Wenn dein Glanz herniederfällt,
Und den Staub mit Schimmer malet;
Wenn das Roth, das in der Wolke blinkt,
In mein stilles Fenster sinkt!
Könnt’ ich klagen, könnt’ ich zagen?
Irre seyn an dir und mir?
Nein, ich will im Busen tragen
Deinen Himmel schon dahier.
Und dies Herz, eh’ es zusammenbricht,
Trinkt noch Gluth und schlürft noch Licht.
Translation:
Oh how beautiful is your world,
Father, when she shines golden!
When your shine falls down,
And paints the dust with shimmer;
When the red that flashes in the cloud
Into my silent window sinks!
Could I complain, could I hesitate?
Be mistaken about you and me?
No, I want to carry it in my bosom
Your heaven is already here.
And this heart, before it collapses,
Still drinking embers and sipping light.
