@@DTheAustralian He means that all "real" Shrek movies start with someone reading the fairytale book, the "real" movies being 1,2, and 4. This movie just starts automatically into the characters, making it different from the other 3. Basically, the opening shows it's not a traditional Shrek movie and is more like a spin-off, which already shows that this isn't going to go well.

.. I really don’t see how the Third is “like a spin-off”. I won’t argue it’s not arguably the weakest Shrek movie, but a Shrek movie is a Shrek movie. A story book opening for 3 would feel super forced in- quality really doesn’t equal “not being”.
Shrek the third is the worst of the 4 movies because:
1) It has the same villain as Shrek 2. Every other movie has a new different villain (1 - Farquaad, 2 - Fairy Godmother and Charming (but it was Charming's first appearance, he wasn't being repeated), 4 - Rumplestiltin)
2 - The jokes are stupider, such as Donkey (about becoming pregnant) asking "how does it happen?" when he is already a father
3 - Stupid things with no explanation, such as on the boating dock, why can't the other cats there speak when Puss can?
4 - The story itself was less interesting, finding a new heir to the throne from a teenage character, where the next movie is about Shrek signing his way to an alternate universe where he never existed, the latter is definitely more interesting. And so are the first 2 movies with Shrek rescuing a princess, learning about a surprising curse she has, and her and Shrek falling in love and getting married, and Shrek taking a potion to become a handsome man. All of that made better stories than the king/Fiona's dad being a frog now, dying (and having a Bond theme play at his funeral), and them finding the bratty teenage heir. And also, many poop jokes when talking about babies (the dream sequence though was one of the very few good moments in the movie)

Shrek 2: A legitimately solid drama with excellent comedy
Shrek 4: A emotional action movie that wraps up the franchise pretty well

I also feel like they really underutilized what could have been a great villain in Charming, I mean you could have turned him into a redeemable bad guy.
You have a guy who from birth was told he would be king, he probably trains forever for his journey, his entire life revolves around it, he endures blistering wind and scorching desert only to find out everything he's been told he would have is gone and he's never going to be king, he follows his mothers evil plans blindly because it's his mother and then when she dies everyone treats him like a villain.
Never understood why they didn't have charming be redeemed at the end of the movie, nothing about him bar his vanity has ever struck me as evil.

Yeah, I always had a problem with the gang just killing him in cold blood at the end. Also I understand that he's a mama's boy but I kind of wish that he wouldn't be this pathetic and uncharismatic. Making Charming relatable would have worked so much better for the kind of villain he was!

I mean he does say in Shrek 2 that he wants to kill Shrek for taking his place as king, so yeah he was still an evil asshole. I remember as a kid actually getting pissed off that Shrek didn't kick his ass, so it was so satisfying to see Shrek finally take on him in this film. Even if people don't like this film in general.
I personally would remove a sin for Pinocchio's incredible going back and forth to Charming about not NOT knowing where Shrek may or may not possibly may be, because that is just hilarious. By the way, I didn't type this quote on the back of memory, it was just how I, remember... I.. remembered how the statement sounded to me in my head. XD

What is Charming the Prince OF exactly? WHY did the Villains obey Charming when he is technically the losing hero where as Shrek is the winning Villain due to him being an Ogre? Wouldn't they be more likely to side with Shrek and Fiora due to both being monsters?
It just goes to show how complex this film really is.
Not to mention his mother is the fairy god mother, who’s apparently in charge of giving people there happily ever afters in the first place, negligently the villains and supporting their enemies. They should be utterly pissed at him over his mother.
Makes me wonder why he wasn't executed for that.
+Brandon Lyon I'm surprised that the villains didn't gut Charming once they realized that he was there now that you have pointed that out. It also doesn't help that Charming's argument was about the Villains getting their own Happy Ever After when that is exactly what Shrek has. Shrek could be seen to symbolize to the Villains that maybe THEY could get their own Happy Ever After too. I'm surprised that not a SINGLE one of those villains thought of that fact and that by helping Charming, they are basically helping one of the ones responsible for their oppression in the first place.

I love Shrek 1 and Shrek 2, with 2 being my favorite. But even I have to admit the Third sucks big time. Its forgetful and just feels like a cash grab. Ironically I enjoyed the fourth one more

Ok but I’m gonna be honest, I honestly love all of the shrek movies, shrek was my childhood and I just can’t seem to hate on any of them.
I liked some more than others, but when each one came out, I went to the cinema immediately.
Imo, this one is the worse one. No one learns everything (even if they did at the end, there was nothing to lead them there) and the poop and cringe is cranked up to 11, which is a lot more than usual. That's about it. The 1st one is great, the 2nd one is a perfect sequel, and the 4th movie just got a bad rep because of this one.

Why is little red riding hood one of the villains? In Shrek 2 she was happily delivering a picnic basket full of chicken legs to Shrek and Fiona's honeymoon suite, but when the villains are pillaging Far Far Away she's stealing something from a drunk elf's pocket.

This movie is horrible, but what saved it for me was watching it in my native Polish language (so many inside Polish jokes and references) and great dubbing cast.
Yeah, the Spanish dub of this movie made it decent for me as a kid.

It's funny you mention the theft with the coconuts and Monty Python - Eric Idle, one of the main dudes of Monty Python, played Merlin, so they did that as "an homage" - but Eric stormed out of the premiere since they stole his joke without telling him. Lol.

It's stakes are better than the third, comedy is way better (at least it doesn't rely on frickin poop jokes), Shrek's responsibilities are handled WAY better than in the third movie, the villain is FAR better, and the tone shift is far better. With everything seeming gothic and dark, in oppose to the other Shrek films, it's honestly pretty daunting... So I'd say:

The one that really ruined it was the fourth one.

Isn't it a bit weird to fade to black on the sole good joke in the entire movie? I mean, "character who can't lie, but also is not supposed to tell truth either, using borderline legal-speak level of convoluted lingo to weasel his way out" is an awesome and underused joke.
That joke doesn't deserve praise because it was executed so poorly. Charming asks Pinocchio if he knows where Shrek is and he responds with "I don't know where he's not.". Since Pinocchio knows where Shrek is, he by extension, knows where Shrek isn't. So he does technically lie in that scene and yet his nose doesn't grow, which completely ruins the joke as the whole scene is supposed to be Pinocchio not lying.
It could have been a good joke but whoever wrote this movie wasn't smart enough to pull it off. (And don't tell me I'm overthinking this kids movie because even as a kid I noticed this).
This just popped into my head: if Fiona was able to turn into an ogre via a curse in the first movie, does that mean Shrek could’ve also once been human?
That was the plot of Shrek 2.

I don't think the implication was that he was once human, it was just a potion that turned "ugly" things into "beautiful" things. Ogres are obviously associated with ugliness and humans with beauty. So the potion probably brought out their "potential beauty", i.e. how Shrek would look *if* he were human, and Fiona as a human (which happens to be her original form).

Here’s my hugest flaw with Shrek The Turd, it played Harold’s death for laughs. I’m like WHAT? It’s supposed to be a emotional and moving moment not a joke!

I don't get why people think Shrek 2 was better than Shrek. Same with Spider-Man. I think people have an amnesiac reaction with sequels that aren't totally terrible. People saying Empire Strikes Back was better than A New Hope seems to be another example. Seriously, Empire sucked compared to New Hope. The plot of Empire was pathetic. A broken hyperdrive from the Millennium Falcon was a plot device that took up the whole freaking movie. The Force went from mysterious to nonsensical.

I remember going to the cinema with my parents and both Shrek the Third and Toy Story 3 were showing; I could only watch one. I chose Shrek. That decision still haunts me, almost a decade later.

I've had a few theories and answers to some of the questions he asked:
4:05- Perhaps they could've said that he'd been divorced many times; it'd make sense because of their awful personalities and technically he'd married and divorced all of them, but had gotten back with Rapunzel. (also, the game spoof near the beginning of Shrek has Cinderella up for grabs as well as Snow White, so maybe it's indicating that or that they just weren't rescued yet.)
6:00- I've wondered for a while how Donkey could talk since there aren't many talking donkeys as far as I know, but then I thought 'What about that movie Pinocchio where all the bad kids went to Treasure Island and turned into donkeys?', so my theory is that Donkey DID receive wedgies, but in his human form before he was turned into a donkey and became one of the few that could talk and wasn't given work.
7:40- I'm thinking they're the trees from Snow White when she was running and it looked like the trees were coming for her, which is also probably why she got revenge when they revolted. I might be wrong, but I don't really know what else it could be.
The only part I disagree with is the trees. Y'all know the trees in Snow White are not sentient right? They're just normal trees. It is her fear that makes her perceive them as monster trees coming at her.

Am I the only one who actually likes this movie? Artie is a great character and I liked seeing the princesses and the expansion of far far away.

I'm wondering about how undefended the castle/ kingdom really is. This is because in Shrek 2 the kingdom is attacked by a giant cookie, knights within the castle responded accordingly, yet no one decided to inform the royal members of said attack to prevent possible harm to the king and queen as well as how easily defeated and small number of knights there were. In this film there is little to no evidence shown that any attempt to protect the kingdom and royal members was made. No one attempted (except for the princesses) to protect the queen. In both films there is a portrayal of the lack of proper and dependable security within the kingdom. I know it's a kids film but I personally believe that showing at least some form of rebellion behind the scenes would have made the overall seriousness of Charmings revenge more believable.

Shrek is a garbage movie franchise
There are two things that really bother me with this movie (that isn't a big deal to anyone else).
1. When a monarch dies, their heir is their child, not the male spouse. So, Fiona would become queen, Shrek would never be a king, just a prince (assuming all monarchies work like the British Monarchy).
2. I suck-eth. -th ending is used in archaic English for 3rd person singular. Eg: he suck-eth, she goeth, it speaketh. It isn't used in first person singular (so, it would still be "I suck," but that doesn't sound very archaic).
Actually, Shrek would be King. King Consort. So, his power would be limited to being able to say, "Fiona, maybe we should-" only for her as Queen Regnant to be able to stop that suggestion dead in its tracks because of her position. As for the -th ending, I never even thought that was used in archaic English, at least not outside of a Biblical sense. But at the time a translation of the Bible into anything but Latin was frowned upon by the Church, last I checked.
I do think people care about that sort of thing, I've heard people say that's a big flaw in the evil plan in Frozen.
Jascha Bull - Yes, Anna would be queen and Hans would be consort, but assuming they have no other relatives (since a male cousin or uncle would take the crown instead of Elsa, the chances of having no relatives at all isn't unreasonable) then the consort would take charge if his wife died
