    This didn't explain jack shit. And I'd really like to know why the standard auto driver was riding the brake for no reason.

      Sadpants McGee They're trying to show the acceleration difference between a car shifting up and down and a CVT.

      SnipinCatz It might *show* it, but it sure as hell doesn't *explain* it.

      Well it's meant for people who already really knew what was going and what CVT was. Maybe there was a clip before that explained it before this was edited or something to make it clear.

    • @CaptainCocaine

      People who already know what CVT is wouldn't bother watching a video called "CVT explained"

    • @SnipinCatz
      @SnipinCatz 9 років тому +1

      Sadpants McGee This is user uploaded content, not official. The video isn't explaining CVT so much as it's highlighting an advantage of CVT. Officially it might have followed a video on the transmission itself, then this was to show why CVT makes a difference in comfort.

      It allows you to coast for a few seconds if you let off the gas (as if the car was in N gear) but then engine braking kicks in.
      It's pretty much one pedal driving if you drive at a relaxed pace.
      Ofcourse if you drive like a lunatic, you need the brakes though.

    Cvts are very good at climbing n going down hills..i drove one up a mountain and i didn't have to rev past 3k rpm during the climb..the low end power is great(linear torque)..unlike an auto trans where you have to rev so high to get power(due to constant upshift/downshift of the torque conv)...and it is also true when going downhill, less braking is required ...cvts r very effective in these aspects.

      But some of us like to peek out the window to look at that vehicle that gets us to point a to b, some of us like cars because they are all different and unique and are made in all sorts of ways and have a certain appeal and feel to them, especially the cool looking cars that are fast and make noises that you can’t explain but you get a rush from, feeling it’s power and hearing it roar, each,in their own way , some us drive cars that are more important than are day at work, you understand?

    I can tell you that my Sentra has great downhill braking with the CVT and the overdrive set to OFF. I don't even need to use the brake when driving down a mountian road; in fact, I sometimes have to use the accelerator to speed up the car on a downgrade with the O/D set to OFF.

  • @irsantedja2477
    @irsantedja2477 10 років тому +14

    I don't think this is an accurate comparison between AT and CVT. The AT car in the video was just demonstrating poor pedal control, not how good drivers would drive their AT cars. (i.e. who would change gears when passing another vehicle at high speed? Why would you have to brake before entering a bend when you are at the right gear?) CVT also makes the car sounds like it has slipping clutch. Toyota has just made the biggest mistake with their 2013 Corollas - switching to CVT.

  • @halo3pownage

    paddle shifters in cars with the CVT transmission are there for people who track their car so they can control the RPM through a turn then when it switches back into D(not simulated manual mode) you can get back to making peak power quickly and its there for the kids who want to feel sporty and shift their car manually even though their car is fasted in D

      ***** Yeah, its usually just a vacuum that holds the throttle at a certain position. Now on more modern cars its done through the on board computer telling the fuel injection what to do. It's throttle over transmission.

    How much worse is the maintenance of a CVT compared to a discrete transmission?

  • @Darwinpasta
    @Darwinpasta 11 років тому +4

    The key bit is the cutaway with the pulleys. Here's what happens.
    Imagine you've got a pulley, with a V-shaped groove, and cut that in half. Half of it can now move in and out. Then there's a belt in there, and as the gap widens and closes, the belt moves farther from or closer to the axle, changing the ratio. A computer controls the pulleys and thus the ratio.
    It's a damn good idea but I kinda doubt its longevity... it relies on friction to transfer power, but fights friction to shift.

    CVT is a great technological breakthrough. Yes, if you are used to racing and jack-rabbit starting and stopping, you don't want it. I have a 2013 Nissan Altima with a CVT in it and it is flat out amazing. Although it only has a 4 cylinder engine it runs like a top and has plenty of acceleration. On top of that, I can get 40 MPG on the highway! Yes, that is not a typo. AT 70 MPH I have gotten 40 MPG consistently. When I run 75-78 MPH it drops to around 36. They are great!

    People are always concern about acceleration and about speed. Something they don't take in consideration is that when an auto movible Company like Nissan or Toyota decide to instal a CVT transmission in their vehicles is for a reason. Nissan and Toyota are top quality economy cars in USA. I personally like the feel of the CVT in my 2014 corolla. It feels smoother and i don't like the feel for the gear changing in a 4-speed automatic. The best part is the increase of fuel economy I noticed on the CTV. Hey is al about going from point a to point b.

      They decided to use CVTs because they are cheaper to manufacture and they claim they reduce the emissions... Now i don't know if that reduces emissions in manufacturing or driving... If its a corporation, they do it for 2 reasons... 1 its cheaper or 2 because some government guideline says they have to. CVT's main point of operation is a V-Belt. Slightly modified of course...

      Your fault for having a car from the 1990s.

    • @makinbac0n
      @makinbac0n 9 років тому

      The CVT transmission is not new technology. Its been used on scooters, mopeds, and go karts for years. They recently started using them on new cars. The 8 speed transmission is another attempt and comfort and efficiency. The debate here is whether CVT's are reliable. Back in the 60's GM introduced the Power Glide which was a 2 speed automatic as an attempt at smooth acceleration. I think CVT's have mastered smooth but I just cant see them in anything bigger than a sub-compact car. Cooper uses them in thier Mini's but if you have the turbo option you have to take a 5 speed manual because the CVT cannot take the torque... Do some research before you make condescending remarks.

    • @IIGrayfoxII
      @IIGrayfoxII 9 років тому +2

      makinbac0n
      I personlly think they are the transmissions of the devil.
      Having the RPM sit at x RPM not overly efficient mainly because they sit at the peak HP rating and Horsepower is not what makes cars move. it is torque.
      Torque is found lower down on the RPM band.

    • @DxCBuG
      @DxCBuG 8 років тому +1

      +Teddy Monroe Actually you really dont have to break downhill with a CVT..... you lift of the accelerator and the motor breaks. The CVT "downshifts" so the revs still stay at the top range for e.g. 6000 rpm. The slower you get the more it changes the "gear" ratio to keep up the motor breaking. But still the video sucked :D

      CVT was first invented in Germany in the 50's so it's hardly new technology anyway, its just been refined and its main function is efficiency since you are never wasting energy by revolutions in between gears, it will never beat a manual for speed of course as you can downshift and make the pistons dance on the bonnet to get the speed.

    • @nazimelon6653
      @nazimelon6653 8 років тому +1

      But... the thing is, on a cvt, you are always on relativly high rpm, compared to a well driven manual.... so basically, you´re using MORE fuel instead of less...

    • @koolyman
      @koolyman 7 років тому +1

      That would depend on whether the control system for the cvt is programmed towards power or efficiency.

    • @felixs9722
      @felixs9722 7 років тому +1

      you're not always on a high rpm, a good CVT will have an overdrive function.

    • @nazimelon6653
      @nazimelon6653 7 років тому

      Okay. but that still takes the advantage from it. basically, what you are saying is, that you are roughly at the same rpm on highways and in cities, as on a manual, if driven correctly. But, the manual and automatic got the advantage of high torque and power outputs.
      So, all in all, the cvt still is a relativly good idea but just doesnt work the way the inventors intended, at least on big cars and engines.

      Distinct Lach No, it's an observation that requires more info from the person who made the comment, not from someone inferring what he thinks they meant; more CVT's being repaired could simply be the result of more of them being in use - what kinds of repairs and at what mileages...that would give an indication if they're "always breaking down."

      +Wall E The problem with the CVT is the torque demands on acceleration from low/no speed, so you have a point. I do think this down side will go away as the technology matures tho. Once the car hits it power band tho, the transmission is ridiculous. It eats both AT's and manuals for breakfast from a rolling start, because you don't need to shift, it just maintains your powerband.

    I had a rental Sentra a few years back that had a CVT. I was not familiar with them at the time and didnt know the car had it when I rented it. I just remember looking it up after I absolutely couldnt stand the way the car drove. I remember experiencing horrible acceleration and the car would just sit at redline under WOT and accelerate so damn slow. Regular automatics accelerate much better which made this video a complete joke. CVT's are good for just putting around town if nobody else is on the road and you never have to accelerate quickly.

    However a good driver will compensate the manual transmission's adversity by planning ahead not just the 100 feet of the bad driver, but a whole mile ahead. As such a good drive doesn't need to brake at all when driving on a winding road.

While the scooter's cvt helps to maintain lower maintenance cost and better fuel economy, the xtronic cvt adds better response, gear shifts that are shock free and then optimal performance at all conditions as opposed to normal expensive and (harsh) auto transmission. how come when I drove a Nissan with a CVT it behaved like it had gears? under hard acceleration I expected it to stay at fairly high RPMs but instead it went up to redline then shifted down a lot then kept on rising to redline as if it had gears. from my driving experience I felt that I could have made the gearbox work much better for both speed and efficiency if i had manual control of the ratio.

    • @Larommi

      Sport mode emulates shifting. So if you had the shifter in Ds, you will get the "shift"

    • @MrGencyExit64
      @MrGencyExit64 9 років тому

      Larommi71 You don't even need sport mode for that. The 4 cylinder Altima has a manual mode, but does not have the sport shift mode. You have to upgrade to the V6 model for that, and it's really just more aggressive ratio selection to keep the engine in its performance powerband rather than the usual fuel saving rules. In fact, you engage sport mode by moving the shifter into manual and then back into automatic.

    Nissan CVT's are the worst in terms of reliability and programming. No other manufacturer has as many complaints logged against them as Nissan has. JATCO is not reliable and Nissan has these transmission programmed to maximize fuel economy while making the car seem like it's 10 years old and falling apart with acceleration problems and lugging. Up hills the car sputters. Yeah, Nissan states this is NORMAL. I'll stick to planetary gear driven. Keep the CVT's in the hybrids where they belong.

    A CVT works like a bike except the fact that instea dof shiftingk to a bigger gear to go fastes the whole roller that the belt is on gets bigger. When they use the manual mode it is just programmed tomake it "seem" like you are shifting by raising and lowering rpm and the roller thats the belt is rolling on. So they arent actually shifts. Youusually have to use the manual mode when you need to go higher speeds from a cruising speed of about 60 or so. hope that helps

    CVTs use hydraulic pressure to move the wheels. When you floor it, all does is keep spinning the pump and generating pressure. If you stop the pump or slow it down, the transmission puts on a halt. So, downhill it does slow it down a lot. But if you want to vehicle to keep going you have to have engine spin the pump. Therefor, there is no disconnect from the transmission ever unless you put it in neutral and in turn disconnect the pump from the axle. Smooth acceleration is true about these vehi

      CVT is theoretically the superior of any transmission to ever be invented, whether it be for fuel economy or acceleration. People just don't like it because it takes out an element of driver interaction. But, since they don't want to admit that, they like to say that it sucks because it isn't as durable as other transmissions, which is true, but still.... With some more research into making them more durable and cheaper, CVTs will objectively be the better transmission.
