I'm going through these comparison videos after hearing about Adobe's updated TOS. I'm an astrophotographer, and I've learned that Affinity Photo has astrophotography tools. That alone would've sold me, and of course, the one-time payment.
I find Affinity Photo to be more stable the Photoshop with large files, but I have been choosing to use Photoshop because, like you said, the selection tools are just amazing! Thanks for the video! 🙌
ive found with krita and gimp that its easier to select the outside borders of something and then inverse selection over trying to go from inside, itll grab the edges better
A nice and fair comparison Abbey. For me as an amateur photographer, Affinity is the tool to use. I'm glad to hear that you continue to do affinity tutorials in the future.
I've been using Photoshop since beginning of time... But I am enjoying Affinity. It is different but not so different that it takes you a really long time. Adobe has a better AI selection that cuts down on your workload, Affinity is still running on the what I consider the basics which it does extremely well. In the end I am enjoying it and throw in Luminar NEO in the mix for fun. One thing I wish Affinity got is a Lightroom contender. The raw tools are great but Lightroom can do batch work on raw and Affinity you have to do one by one. After. Big photoshoot... Nobody ain't got time for raw editing mechanical repetitive work, Lightroom to the rescue. Hope Affinity team makes one soon!
I'm not much of a photoshop artist but for the longest time i used gimp for things sutch as thumbnails for videos i make pixel art/ game art normal maps and exiting photos. While it did do its job as soon as I got affinity photo it was like night and day when it came to thumbnail making and all sorts of different things i have been doing. Just being able to edit a text to make it 3D has blown my mind. The software has really expanded my potential for photo editing
The biggest difference is the technology both platforms use. Affinity has own native files, and environment, which allows to have resolution independent toll to be better and faster, eg Affinity Designer shapes, and lines, etc till you turn them into the outline. It has some feature similar to old LivePicture soft from two decades back, wchi was (at that time) much ahead of Photoshop( it did not use much RAM memory, but I was 10 times faster with unlimited undo, as Affinity).
I use both Photoshop and Affinity Photo. It's been my experience that, after making the selection and the initial refinement, Affinity Photo does a better job with hair. It's not perfect and still requires more refinement, but the results are better. Admittedly, in most of my work I'm cutting a model out of a uniform, neutral background, so perhaps that has something to do with it.
I love Affinity and appreciate the developers passion. I'm trying to fully make the switch myself, but it's difficult and frustrating when you're in the middle of a project and you realize there's certain effects that you cannot apply / pull off. I create a lot of photo manipulations so I often have to resort to adobe.
On top of that, PS has some pretty awesome AI tools lateley, that instant helps me in seconds, what cost much more time if you need to do it by hand. That alone, makes PS a much better tool in the long run. Second, the CC library is a huge win too. Everything linked in every Adobe tool. In overal, PS is way ahead vs Photo. But Photo is a great photo editor if you do this for hobby or only need it for some edits and thats it.
Performance and Adobe shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence unless it's talking about how bad it is. PS user since PS6 and now an Affinity Photo user.
I have purchaised it for fun years ago and find that for that price there is no comparison amongs the two. Affinity photo ( and Designer) are excellent. Yes you need to spend quite a lot of time after years and years of Photoshop but ... if you are not a profi that don't look at price it is undubitably the better choice.
My biggest issue with Adobe softwares, is that they don't have colored tools and a better UI.. it might seem like a very small thing.. but I'll put it like this.. Affinity makes me WANT to be creative, the more simple and userfriendly and better looking workspace & UI. Photoshop is definitely still amazing and I've been using it for years and years, but.. it makes me not want to do anything in it, because of the things mentioned above.
Really great comparison video. I personally prefer Affinity because of the interface and ease of use. Photo 2.0 has made some nice strides in overcoming some glaring shortcomings - like a non-destructive warp. But, yeah, nobody comes close to Photoshop's auto-selection tools, and those can be really time-saving. However, I have to say, I think Affinity's Selection Brush is a little bit better. I do use both programs.
I so want to switch from Photoshop to Affinity, but the fact that the color Adjustments aren't passing through from PSD to Affinity, sadly, it's a deal-breaker for me. All my recent files are using Adjustments. Thank you for this video.

I'm still using photoshop CS6 that I borrowed from my dad's work bcs nobody was using it there. I'm a student so paying for the new photoshop is absolutely unrealistic for me and the CS6 is doest really offer the cool stuff the new PS has. Im using now only for personal suff like photo editing and 3D renders editing anyway, but 'm really considering the Affinity photo now instead.
As a affinity photo user for designs - I find them lacking tremendously. Where as phoshop has selections with prompting (quickly come up with designs… if bring this feature to iPad… I’ll leave affinity photo for photoshop. Affinity photo is bad in terms of UX & UI and no selections for prompting.. sad
I did not have any problems with crashes in Affinity 1. Ever! It has never crashed! In v2 on the other hand, it has started to get laggy and deals a lot with crashes. (Well. My pc has not been overhaled for like fours years). I guess it will get better when v2 gets older. My impression however, is that the resource library and the fx (shadowing, liquify etc) are better in PS. And that is the only thing I can think of. Which makes me doubt that Affinity is aimed at hobbyists and beginners to the extent you describe. It sound somewhat PS-biased to me. BUT I am no expert myself, so I can`t know 😁It is never to late to learn. And the crossover between these programs are not _that_ hard. The best from both worlds is the thing.
To be fair, "industry standard" today, at least for me, means "steer far away from". Sure, the community is much bigger most of the time, but other than that, you can't excuse crappy stuff with insane pricing just by adding "industry standard" stamp on it. Resolve, Reaper and Blender work as a case in point. Those aren't industry standards but have evolved into something far better than the countering industry standards like Premiere, ProTools and Maya. The industry standard usually means they have stopped evolving since early 2000's but have steered towards this absolutely sickening pricing scheme.
I agree 100% with you. And to claim that Affinity is exclusively for beginners or hobbyists is a misunderstanding. It is a powerful tool that can be used by both beginners and professionals, depending on individual needs and abilities. The important thing is to recognize that professional qualification goes beyond the choice of tool, being determined by the individual's knowledge, experience and skills. I agree that most professionals in the area use photoshop, but saying that affinity is for amateurs is a little disrespectful to the developers who are doing a great job with the tool, as well as to the professionals who chose to use the affinity stack instead adobe. My opinion.
Good thing that Affinity doesn’t claim your artwork as theirs as how Adobe does with its users to train their AI.

After 5-years of using Photoshop I am finally ready to switch to Affinity Photo 2 because I am tired of their subscription model.

Definitley should, I have been converted... I don't appreciate the recurring billing and it's pretty much got every featureset I would ever need.

Affinity Phot has better support for EXR files which is why I made the switch.

Photoshop for desktop… and for IPad Affinity photo hands down.
Photoshop has terrible support and also doesn’t work if you’re in the middle of no where as it won’t work offline for an extended period
