Makes me sad that this song has been reccomended by Taylor Swift which is great, but with that brings 13 year old girls who don't understand beautiful music and the meaning behind it, but to these girls listen more than once, and try to understand what he's saying and I'm sure you'll come to love it.

This song is based on the poem 'Piano' by D H Lawrence - the first verse is almost word-for-word the same as the first stanza. Amazing lyrics and great adaptation to music

In my opinion, the song is about him hearing a woman playing the piano and reminding him of the loss of his mother. He is imagining the little boy being there who is actually him watching her play.
