  • There are thousands of ways to score a goal. Some require a tremendous amount of skill, some a combination of power and accuracy, and some involve being in the right place at the right time.
In today's video, we discuss one of the most effective finishes that became famous back in the early 2000s, thanks to Thierry Henry. This delicate, well-placed pass of the ball is often all it takes to beat the outstretched goalie. We'll also learn how to execute it with three simple skills you can practice the next time you're on the field. I hope you enjoy :)

One of the issues is that you need to be very quick to take those extra steps running arouns the ball. If you've got very little time and space most players will use their weaker foot when the window to shoot opens rather than go around the ball.

I started doing this in the 90s. My original inspiration was Dennis Bergkamp. The way he could effortlessly open up his body, and sidefoot bend the ball into the top corner was legendary. Henry was also great at this, and I used to copy the way he cut the ball from left to right with the outside of his foot before immediately bending the ball into the far corner.

One thing Henry has said is that Mbappe is bringing it back, but also with his own spin. He open his hips as if to go far post, but goes near post instead. So whenever he bears down on goal and opens his hips, he makes the goalkeeper have to make a decision to save his near or far post

One criticism I'd have is that Henry and Haaland have the luxury of being one of the fastest players of their respective times. On Haaland's goal, the average striker might not have enough time to cut across the ball like that because the defender would be closer to them. Although this technique can be fruitful, it is still important not to neglect your weaker side. Make sure you have the time and space to open up like this before doing so.

@@-.-_-.-_-.-_-.-_-.-_-.-_- well yeah defending is not really about technique or skills(those help), its about awareness, physical ability, smarts and coordination. all of which are kind of hard to teach or even put into words in a 7 minute yt video. there is also the fact that defenders in any sport are at a disavantage compared to scorers since sometimes its just a game of probability and is very much influenced by scheme and teammates in a way sometimes scoring isnt.

@@TheCompleteGuitarist The problem you have described isn't inherently related to this specific type of shot though. The issue is that any move or shot will become predictable if you use it too often, and don't vary what you are doing enough to remain unpredictable.
I use this shot fairly often, but I mix it up by going high and low, far post and near post, as well as using a variety of other types of finish, such as laced power shots, chip shots, fake shots, toe pokes, or whatever fits the situation. So, defenders and keepers have a hard time predicting what I'm going to do.
The shot itself is not inherently predictable. The thing that is predictable is the person who doesn't vary what they are doing enough.

If the keeper cheats and tries to dive to that far side you can fake and go near post. Hazard was a master at that. My thoughts exactly. Everyone plays inverted these days -- is rare to see a winger or wide mid playing on their "strong" foot (ie, right footer on the right side of the pitch.) Part of the story of the death of crossing is most players can't pick out a pass on the move on their weaker foot.

It's a really good technique. However, we could also train kids to be able to use both feet.
My dad always advocated this. Sadly, I was never any good at football, but I remember a P.E teacher from the local secondary school walking through the grounds of my primary school on his way back to work at lunchtime trying to get a bunch of us to practice with our bad foot. We stopped once he'd gone, but at least he suggests he would do this with the senior kids in training who might have had a bit more talent than the likes of myself and my buddies.
I imagine they still do this, but not having kids, I don't know.

Even if it isn't that far from their body, most have hard time getting down on time to make a save with their hands, hence decent amount of keepers use their legs instead, but coverage length is limited.

It is a great breakdown and explanation and the tips are spot on. However I can't help but bring up that this is only one of many different scenarios a player would find themselves in and requires other variables to be right, like for example, it is a technique that shines when you are one-on-one with the keeper or have plenty of space to maneuver, but that as soon as there is pressure or a defender properly positioned, it loses a lot of it effectiveness.

    Thanks, TFF!
Finally, I found the reason why I always can't keep consistence of aiming far post.
I missed one more foot step after the final touch, that made my body can't open wide enough.

      Yes, of course!
It's really improved the consistency of the push shot.
I think the one more step helps open body and then turn my hip open.
This gives me more angle to push or make a little curve.
      😁😁😁Thanks a lot!

Coming around also makes it easier to put a little spin on the ball --- bending the trajectory so the shot will slightly curl around the GK and into the far side of the net.

This is how I used to score when I played, I never went for flashy goals, though I have scored a fair few, like the odd Bicycle, but I always just accurately placed the ball into the corners with the inside of the foot.

One benefit of this and you can see it on the Haaland clip as well is that it's also much easier to score on the near post because the goalie expects you to put it in the bottom corner of the far post and so opens up as well

When I was growing up I was a striker, this was so long ago there's very little footage of if but I'm certain if I had every goal I ever scored in open play at least 90% of them would be side footed placed shots. It's simple and it works.

I think this kind of stuff comes to the player naturally. Sometimes I did this too by accident (not to the same degree of quality the likes of Henry etc. of course) because I felt more comfortable on my stronger foot. But I do admire winger who are comfortable on both sides like Ousmane Dembele or Mudryk

Shooting very high under the crossbar is better for scoring.
The far top corner is the most difficult for the goal keeper of course. But a high powerfull shot near the center is also very difficult if the keeper is relativ close to you.
So if you have the chance run close to the goal/keeper and shoot high. Most of the time the keeper comes close to you anyway.
If you have time do a fake shot first. It disrupts the defender and keepers balance.

One of the reasons Henry’s method was so effective was he was able do this without fully opening his body out.
Top, top keepers will take visual clues from how and where you’re going to strike a ball from things like your body shape and back lift - so fully showing pass to the corner would come at some disadvantage for most strikers.
Yet Henry was excellent at concealing what we all knew he wanted to do, by staying front on and only flicking the passing wedge out at the last second.

quite similar to most of Heung-Min Son's finishing. Got fed a ball, shoot it across the opposite post. Clinical & clean, most of the time.

it is good way to learn also is to strike it in the first post , the goalie sometimes leaves a bit of space their and could easliy strike it a drag ball in the first post

i think most players nowadays are encouraged to use two feet always and even if they miss with their weak foot it’s good practice. I’ve always been pretty one footed with my left food and i don’t think i’ve ever shot with my right food, maybe 2/3 tap ins when it’s basically a pass into the next but whenever i go for power i use my left so i always do this when i can or i try to run right and cut back in or pass it. If i devoted myself to making my weak foot better years ago i’d probably do this less as i’d be more comfortable shooting with my right but i only ever think of shooting with my left so this is natural to me
