The Final Smashes were most likely simplified because of 8-Player Smash and especially the addition of a Final Smash Meter, in which they will happen a lot more often, so it's important to keep the pace of the match flowing. It is not because the developers couldn't think of original Final Smashes for a large number of characters.
as someone who likes to dick around with final smashes and stamina online and torture people with them, they really are the ultimate pace breaker. most characters have cutscenes that last way too long and not only break the pace but interrupt gameplay in a way that can get you killed. you lose items after them, your momentum can be cancelled while you're recovering, the game STOPS for these. they're bad.
I disagree that it was 8player smash, especially since a lot of final smashes were specifically swapped in Ultimate, not WiiU or 3ds (which handled them well)
I miss when Final smashes were interactive, transforming final smashes including:Wario-Man,Giga Bowser,Giga Mac,Super Sonic,Mega Charizard,Mega Lucario,Super dragon Yoshi and Diddy Kong's rocket barrel blast were all so good because of the amount of chaos they made. And unique final smashes like Luigi's negative zone and Donkey Kong's Konga bit had some really cool mechanics attached to them. But sadly most final smashes in Ultimate now require a single button input and then a cutscene happens and then after the attack is done the characters get launched away from the user, like no hate on cutscene final smashes they sure look great but they went overboard with those,at least Smash 4 had a healthy balance of unique final smashes and cutscene based ones.
Finally, someone said it! One of my main gripes with Ultimate was making all Final Smashes basically be the same finisher move. I hope we'll go back to more unique final smashes in the next smash game.
They turned Warioman from a superhero to a superzero. I used to have a blast using his motorcycle to see how long I could drive on Big Blue, flying as long as I could. It was great. Now it's just a cutscene. So boring.

9:15 I... half-disagree. This game still did things to cater to competitive fans, such as having the Level 9 CPUs be trained using actual competitive players. Smash Ultimate was trying to do both, be good for casuals AND competitives. The issue with Final Smashes is that they were tilted towards competitive very poorly.
@@Spencil-ssb I like the idea of both approaches but the earlier games do their brand more justice. Great video! The editing and the amount of detail you go into the Final Smashs is amazing! Also Pichu getting hit by your final smash at the end made me laugh lol
I always thought they should go bold and do something Like Ryu where everyone gets 2 final smashes. One is for an opponent in front of you and does a huge bombastic cinematic, and a stray version that has an environmental or transformation that the player influences.
I wouldn’t say the cutscene final smashes are boring, they’re actually quite a spectacle to watch and satisfying to land in most cases. However, some of the final smashes could’ve have been better or at least have a slight change to make them slightly more unique(echo fighters). I personally don’t think we can really blame them for this, since like you said, having all those characters in the game made it hard to make unique final smashes for each character that are on brawl levels of craziness and spectacle.
I think Luigi’s original final smash would’ve made FAR better sense if it was used for Waluigi, I mean think about, concentrated energy from being overlooked time and time again + weird dances?
Final Smashes became more streamlined and less exciting (I swear every DLC fighter just has a Cutscene Final Smash), the PNG-ification of it is a good way of saying it I actually kind of miss being able to control Mega Lucario, or fly around as Mega Charizard or Yoshi, or ride around in the Landmaster tanks (as silly as it was for both Falco to have one when he prefers the air, but that kinda adds to the charm, or for Wolf to inexplicably also have one, but then there's also that famous meme of him falling through Yoshi's Island with it) And it'd be fine if it really was in the interest of competitive play but I believe FS Meter was just never really allowed at all, so we just get a bunch of overhauled Final Smashes that just don't even see any use It's a shame, because like, other fighting games have super attacks or meters they gotta build up, right? That's gotta be hype to see, beating an opponent after using your super move, but we still don't even get to see that here
I dont mind cutscene final smashes. Some of them are really cool like King K Rool's, King Dedede's and Incinaroar's. But others dont warrant needing a cutscene so they end of feeling super cheap, like Byleth's, Min Min's, and Pyra/Mythra's. Joker's made sense because its taken right from the game
Bowser is so good in Smash Ultimate. I play as Bowser a lot in Ultimate. He’s got incredible speed for his size, he’s a giant dragon-turtle and his power is ridiculous. He’s fun.
I agree. The final smashes in Ultimate are flashy but are not as impactful because they all function so similarly. If they had slightly more variations, then I would be fine with them.
On the topic of final smashes i like to note that my personal wish if waluigi gets added to smash is that waluigi would get luigi's old final smash negative zone, seeing as it fits him way more then it did with luigi
As much as i loved luigi's negative zone, that was almost a guaranteed 2, maybe 3 stocks if used correctly with upercut. Also the only Final smash that could knock players off spawn platform into a dizzy state and KO players with starman invincibility.
For the buff transformation final smash I would separate them into a new ball that buffs the character while keeping the cinematic ones And for some characters that don’t have transformations or don’t get one just glow and get yellow eyes *yea sounds boring but it makes sense*
Rosalina's Final Smash in Smash 4 was more fun though if you threw the opponents right in the center. Just watch their damage rack up before they fly off the screen unceremoniously. Now, it's simplified and easier since it sucks them in, but it's not as gratifying with fixed damage. You did take the words out of my mouth with how most of the Final Smashes suddenly took on an archetype that's just trapping the opponent, loading a special cutscene, then reverting to the match and inflicting high damage and knockback. I thought about that after watching enough Final Smashes to notice that pattern. I do like straight-to-the-point Final Smashes, but it's also a sort of travesty how the chaotic fun in the old Final Smashes just straight up vanished.
@@ivrydice0954 it would make sense. Charizard and Wario were prbly the worst ones in terms of control for me. Maybe Diddy Kong but his was more like I’d either kill everyone or miss everyone entirely

@@DORAisD34D I’d argue that Pyra/Mythra’s being a cutscene one makes sense. The attack is based on is a level 4 special move and all of those were just over the top flashy animations
I think it's a little bit of both but it all starts with the FS Meter. With the Smash Ball, Final Smashes were a special event that you had to earn and there would only be 1, or 2, or even none in a match. With Final Smash meter there's going to be a Final Smashes left and right and since you can't have multiple going off at the same time, it makes sense that Final Smashes had to be quick and to the point, and most importantly capable of whiffing since using a Final Smash was no longer a reward in of itself. Sure full on transformations like Giga Bowser and Wario Man I can completely understand being cut for time, but surely in a bunch of these cases animating a whole cut-scene takes more work then just porting the move, and the majority of the controllable final smashes were pretty limited to begin with. As someone who plays a lot with FS Meter on the idea of spending half the match avoiding the Landmaster and not being able to do anything to stop it, would easily have made me turn it off immediately.
@Spenkr YEAH THAT'S TRUE BRO😂, I wouldn't be mad if the next smash game had less characters compared to ultimate, but the characters were all unique and had good controllable final smashes
Solid Video, very enjoyable I just wanted to point out how I thought it was funny that Meta Knight was referred to as "they" and Jigglypuff as "she" when the former is the one with a confirmed gender 😂
I know it'd be overkill and take WAY too much time and effort, but I wouldn't mind seeing you use your Final Smash on everyone. Seeing that being done on characters like Mewtwo, Charizard, and Ridley would be hilarious. Anyway, I'm generally fine with Final Smashes now since none of them can be as unfair and OP as Brawl's Super Sonic.
Transformation final smashes used to be so much fun I remember me and my cousins screaming and laughing as we chase eachother with the landmaster to take us to the skies or getting combo'd by Snake's gernade launcher. They used to be fun to control man now they're mostly lame cutscenes
"We can have World of Light be the husk of an adventure mode it is compared to the subspace emissary" Pretty sure you were referring to that line-what exactly are you critiquing?
@@Spencil-ssb Honestly WOL is bad but not because of the story. The bosses and antagonists are actually pretty cool and the lack of cutscenes doesn't make or break it. What I genuinely hate is the lack of sidescrolling stages. In Melee and Brawl you had these little platforming stages full of enemies from all across the smash universe. It was cool, and it's what made it feel special to me. But now it's just vs. mode with gimmicks here and there. It's classic mode with branching paths. So boring.
I couldn't agree more! We're losing personality and gameplay with those PNGs. That's why I still prefer Smash Bros Wii U which also added moves customisation! Giving us even more options and variety of game! 💙

Dude i remember when i was younger i saw wario's final smash and tought that was so frickin cool so i started to play more with wario, So when i saw in ultimate they made his final smash a cutscene i was devastated...
Ever since Ultimate simplified Final smashes, its incredibly easy to put them in categories, though I had 3 boxes instead of 2: 1. Trap: Final Smashes that require the player to make contact with another in order to trigger. If not, the FS is whiffed. (Ike, Greninja, Little Mac, etc) 2. Spectacle: Final Smashes that alter the user. These don't whiff like Traps and play out regardless, though usually require the player to target foes. (Luigi, Pit, Bowser, etc) 3. Nuke: Final Smashes that cover the entire screen, are near impossible to dodge, and practically guarantee a KO. (Mario, Ness, Samus, etc) There nay be some oddballs that don't quite fit in this sort of categorization, but oh well.
I really do think you’re onto something with time constraints. I was very disappointed to see every single DLC fighter got the exact same cutscene final smash treatment when some of them could have been very unique and fun. They even teased us with Piranha Plant’s final smash, but it quickly fell short once we got to Hero and Banjo. The only explanation I can think of is because these characters were being announced/released at like 3-4 month intervals on top of balancing changes. Their final smashes just kinda seemed to be put on the back burner…
Ya know, if people didn't have the patience of a toddler, they'd of taken their time and we would of truely gotten a true ultimate smash bros game. That and corporations like Nintendo being themselves.
I dont mind cutscene final smashes. Some of them are really cool like King K Rool's, King Dedede's and Incinaroar's. But others dont warrant needing a cutscene so they end of feeling super cheap, likr Byleth's, Min Min's, and Pyra/Mythra's
Yeah I've noticed this trend myself. Not just in Smash but a lot of fighting games. Might have to do with development costs and time constraints like you said, but I much prefer real moves. Now mechanically they're just a single punch or slash that does a lot of damage.
This was one of MANY things that got downgraded due to Smash Ultimate’s faster gameplay. We can’t have controllable Final Smashes anymore because “oh, we need to make this game faster, so let’s just speed up/shorten victory themes, taunts, and Final Smashes!” I really hope the next game doesn’t have fast paced gameplay like Smash Ultimate so we can have long victory themes, taunts, and controllable Final Smashes again. I miss playing as Giga Bowser 😭
Yeah I realized how gutted the Final Smashes got especially during Ultimate's DLC period where most of the newcomers Final Smashes boiled down to either "brb I'm gonna go blow up this one iconic thing from my home series" or "I'll beat you with the power of friendship!" cutscene Final Smashes. They did this mainly to appease the competitive crowd (Same reason why they cut taunts down to the point Pikachu's voice now abruptly ends in one of them) and because "competitive fighting games do ultimate attacks this way too", only for said competitive crowd to still refuse to touch Final Smashes within a hundred foot radius, making this change largely pointless, at least the old Final Smashes where fun to mess around with casually, now their just bland all around.
I agree! Such a weird feature to cater to the competitive scene-they could've done a lot more competitive friendly changes, but now we don't have Wario-Man anymore 🥲
@@Spencil-ssb I mean, I wouldn't mind it as much if they at least did something more unique with the cutscene Final Smashes instead of the same two power of friendship and blow up iconic thing scenes over and over again. You've seen one cutscene Final Smash, you've basically seen them all. I think even Nick All Star Brawl 2 tried to diversify their cutscene Final Smash equivalents a little if I recall correctly..
I do hope the next game brings back some more classic controllable final smashes. I like Giant Fist Bowser but it would be nice to have more variation with what can happen. Also if Snake comes back his Brawl final smash is a must to return his new one is the same concept but lame.
imo they also made a mistake with giving so many characters Ike’s final smash. They had a great one for meta knight that fits his character. Now? He just copies Ike. Robin, Cloud, Sheik (albeit more like Link’s old one), Greninja, hell even Kirby somewhat. They even have a Pokemon who has the Ike final smash. Give my man Ike a break
I think a lot of the changes is what hurt it in my opinion. And transformation into cutscenes were a mixed one. I liked Diddy’s and Warios changes (wario man was literally 10 secs in smash 4) but Giga Bowser and Sonic was bad. Kaiju Bowser was a big thing for the series and being reduced to a punch was lame. Sonic’s somehow became weaker. But sometimes I’ve seen ppl hate a final smash for not referencing anything. Like Triforce slash. One of my personal favs.
Damn I want to get this good at editing. Anyway, comments are right I was expecting thousands of views at least. But I know firsthand that time doesn't translate to views. Smash UA-cam is in a tough spot, but this vid is great.
Yeah out of all the final smash lobotomies DDDs is the only one I'm really ok with. The big gay dance is super fun and unique but I also love the impact on him slamming the hammer into the opponent. Few of the other characters got that same impact though, and the ones that did still felt off. Take megaman for example. There's however many lazers and they amount to the same force as a vacuum cleaner. The game as a whole also just feels off to me. I'm a fully casual player and I'd much rather have tripping than whatever they did to ultimate to make it feel so off.
I do miss Brawl/Smash 4's wacky Final Smashes, especially Wario-Man and Giga Bowser. Some are better in Ultimate (Donkey Kong and Dedede especially) and I get it was done for keeping 8-player smash fast, but man I miss zooming all over the screen as Wario-Man.
I’m fine with ones like Mii Brawler’s. I’m not fine with the ones that stop the fighting completely and make everyone watch as a single person gets hit in a repetitive cutscene. All of the Ultimate newcomers fall into this except for Inkling and Piranha Plant. And Pyra, Mythra, and Kazuya have pointless cutscenes when the moves do damage on the field anyway. I miss Wario-Man and the Big Gay Dance.
The Final Smashes were most likely simplified because of 8-Player Smash and especially the addition of a Final Smash Meter, in which they will happen a lot more often, so it's important to keep the pace of the match flowing. Very true! Didn't really think of 8 player smash being a factor 🤔
Theoretically I get that. But nothing breaks the pace more than cutscene after cutscene interrupting gameplay
I mean, they should do those simplified final smashes as The smash meter, and the good ones (like giga bowser) as The smash Ball one

Thats why Project Plus is the goat since it still lets you play the Glorious Wario Man
YES
Even better with Project + EX, because you get Sceptile and Ridley
The ending of this video is so true 😭😂
I think Luigi’s original final smash would’ve made FAR better sense if it was used for Waluigi, I mean think about, concentrated energy from being overlooked time and time again + weird dances?
I unironically subscribed just for that endind with Pichu
Final Smashes became more streamlined and less exciting (I swear every DLC fighter just has a Cutscene Final Smash), the PNG-ification of it is a good way of saying it
I actually kind of miss being able to control Mega Lucario, or fly around as Mega Charizard or Yoshi, or ride around in the Landmaster tanks (as silly as it was for both Falco to have one when he prefers the air, but that kinda adds to the charm, or for Wolf to inexplicably also have one, but then there's also that famous meme of him falling through Yoshi's Island with it)
And it'd be fine if it really was in the interest of competitive play but I believe FS Meter was just never really allowed at all, so we just get a bunch of overhauled Final Smashes that just don't even see any use
It's a shame, because like, other fighting games have super attacks or meters they gotta build up, right? That's gotta be hype to see, beating an opponent after using your super move, but we still don't even get to see that here
So true I miss so many of the old final smashes-as you can probably tell lol
I dont mind cutscene final smashes. Some of them are really cool like King K Rool's, King Dedede's and Incinaroar's. But others dont warrant needing a cutscene so they end of feeling super cheap, like Byleth's, Min Min's, and Pyra/Mythra's. Joker's made sense because its taken right from the game
@@DORAisD34D they get boring after once or twice though.
Yeah a lot of them feel so similar
Some lf the cutscene final smashes dont even warrent having a cutscene. It ends up freling like im watchng an af

On the topic of final smashes i like to note that my personal wish if waluigi gets added to smash is that waluigi would get luigi's old final smash negative zone, seeing as it fits him way more then it did with luigi
That would be so sick for both Waluigi AND negative zone returning
As much as i loved luigi's negative zone, that was almost a guaranteed 2, maybe 3 stocks if used correctly with upercut. Also the only Final smash that could knock players off spawn platform into a dizzy state and KO players with starman invincibility.
God damn this video did a great job of showing the glory of Final Smashes in Brawl. Consider me subscribed
Thank you so much!!
I actually prefer cinematic smashes, they're only 5 seconds, not a whole minute of running like crazy from your opponent.
People are still going to run away from you because you have a Final Smash in general. Especially if you have a 0 to Death Final Smash.
For the buff transformation final smash I would separate them into a new ball that buffs the character while keeping the cinematic ones
And for some characters that don’t have transformations or don’t get one just glow and get yellow eyes
*yea sounds boring but it makes sense*
Smash UA-camr pronounces "Sakurai" correctly challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)
I'm trying my best man I'm not Japanese
The png-ification is so real
Down Throw into Final Smash.
I personally prefer the cinematic/ cutscene ones to the transformation ones. I always had a hard time using the transformation ones
Ah that explains it.
Sakurai just wants to make the game more accessible.
Agree to disagree! Some of the old final smashes are a little difficult to control
@@ivrydice0954 it would make sense. Charizard and Wario were prbly the worst ones in terms of control for me. Maybe Diddy Kong but his was more like I’d either kill everyone or miss everyone entirely
I dont mind cutscene final smashes. Some of them are really cool like King K Rool's, King Dedede's and Incinaroar's. But others dont warrant needing a cutscene so they end of feeling super cheap, like Byleth's, Min Min's, and Pyra/Mythra's
You make a very good point! The changes make more sense now that Final Smash meter exists
They turned my boy Wario man into an unskipable cutscene 😢
What have they done 😭
Stuff like this is the reason I stopped caring about Smash... It just isn't fun anymore
Definitely an unfortunate aspect of Ultimate 🥲
@@Spencil-ssb smash 4 3ds was the last one I ever touched.
Guess having smash more competitive just sucks the fun out.
This video is so well made
@@andreas_64 Thank you!!
You can’t deny how funny it was to use Wario man and just target one of your brothers because it was funny
And it was hilarious to fly around with his aerials 😂

HES SO BROKEN I LOVE IT
@Spenkr YEAH THAT'S TRUE BRO😂, I wouldn't be mad if the next smash game had less characters compared to ultimate, but the characters were all unique and had good controllable final smashes
Solid Video, very enjoyable
I just wanted to point out how I thought it was funny that Meta Knight was referred to as "they" and Jigglypuff as "she" when the former is the one with a confirmed gender 😂
I could imagine Steve turning into herobrian, and (even though I think soras is ok right now) I think sora could’ve implemented Disney characters more
Final Smashes turned into fighting game supers almost. Like a level 3 from Virgil in UMVC3
Super Sonic in Brawl was a real menace haha!
Transformation final smashes used to be so much fun I remember me and my cousins screaming and laughing as we chase eachother with the landmaster to take us to the skies or getting combo'd by Snake's gernade launcher. They used to be fun to control man now they're mostly lame cutscenes
Snake's original final smash was so cool
Transformations were such a cool idea. I get why they got removed and I really don't like it. They were fun!
Wario's pose on the thumbnail looks awfully familiar, I can't quite put my finger on it tho
It's him on the ground after being hit
It really sucks that final smashes are just cutscenes
“Husk of a shell of subspace emissary”
Doggifu would REALLY like to have a word with you.
"We can have World of Light be the husk of an adventure mode it is compared to the subspace emissary"
Pretty sure you were referring to that line-what exactly are you critiquing?

But of course comp players don't want that.
Smash players hate fun. That's what happened to final smashes.
TBH I love final smashes still
Im surprised you didnt even talk about how they did super sonic so wrong
Dude i remember when i was younger i saw wario's final smash and tought that was so frickin cool so i started to play more with wario,
So when i saw in ultimate they made his final smash a cutscene i was devastated...
Me too 😔
Ever since Ultimate simplified Final smashes, its incredibly easy to put them in categories, though I had 3 boxes instead of 2:
1. Trap: Final Smashes that require the player to make contact with another in order to trigger. If not, the FS is whiffed. (Ike, Greninja, Little Mac, etc)
2. Spectacle: Final Smashes that alter the user. These don't whiff like Traps and play out regardless, though usually require the player to target foes. (Luigi, Pit, Bowser, etc)
3. Nuke: Final Smashes that cover the entire screen, are near impossible to dodge, and practically guarantee a KO. (Mario, Ness, Samus, etc)
There nay be some oddballs that don't quite fit in this sort of categorization, but oh well.
Yeah when writing the script I was deciding between 2 or 3 categories. You're organization makes sense too!
You mean Stage Wide(PK Star Storm and Shadow Mario Paint)
Directional(Zero Laser and Mario Finale)
LMFAOOO THAT ENDING
LOL I had a lot of fun making that part

Yeah I've noticed this trend myself. Not just in Smash but a lot of fighting games. Might have to do with development costs and time constraints like you said, but I much prefer real moves. Now mechanically they're just a single punch or slash that does a lot of damage.
True unfortunately 😕
This is going to be good
Hope you liked it!
1:30 in. this is a masterwork of editing and the lack of views is absolute fuckin bullshit
Really appreciate the support!!
I didn’t like how the DLC characters only had the cutscene final smash. It felt very boring the more characters we got.
Exactly. I agree!
I miss playing as Giga Bowser 😭
the ending was amazing
Thank you!!! 😊
The ending is if saitama was in the game
@BoMor-453 The power of friendship can get a little boring sometimes 😴
imo smash shouldn't cater to the competitive scene in any way. Just focus on making the game fun.
I do hope the next game brings back some more classic controllable final smashes. I like Giant Fist Bowser but it would be nice to have more variation with what can happen. Also if Snake comes back his Brawl final smash is a must to return his new one is the same concept but lame.
Snakes new final smash just doesn't have the wow factor of him climbing onto the screen
imo they also made a mistake with giving so many characters Ike’s final smash.
There's a reason I wish Smash Ult would have a skip cutscene button
Too many cutscenes for real 😪
underrated bro
Hot take but i actually prefer the simplification of final smashes.
>:(
Agree to disagree! Some of the new ones are decent
Did your FS end with a Baldi's Basics reference?!
Thank you so much for the support!!
Yeah, Dedede's new final smash is honestly pretty cool. But yeah sometimes Ultimate can feel a little awkward
Dedede Smash 4 is the best. It can hit up to 7 players but it's easy to escape.
Because you can’t control them like you use to . We make a joke about landmaster but dam was it fun playing as a land master
It was SO MUCH FUN to use the Land Master
With SSBU it’s just mostly mini movie scenes instead of getting to move across the stage and using the character. Kinda just ruined it.
