Love this song. U2 stretching to the boundaries. With lyrics much deeper than one might first realize, and very prophetic as we listen in 2024. The bombardment of information and commercialism leaves you numb to what is important. Facts and fakes leave you not caring , and it’s just where the ones dishing it out want you to be. The first line: Don't move Don't talk out of time Don't think Don't worry Everything's just fine
The horror face is priceless 😂. I guess it's the same face we all did when we hear this for the first time. By the way, the guitarist The Edge is the one singing the verses while Bono only sings the falsettos. Good luck listening to Lemon 😅
Sometimes when looking at something like this for a first time, especially something like this for the first time, some context is needed. U2 throughout the eighties were progressing naturally. They were very active in the eighties whereby when the eighties came to an end, they so wanted a change, a full on change and not just a natural progression. Hence, in 1991 Achtung Baby came along, something seriously different from anything that came before. The music was heavier, attitudes changes, looks/image seriously changed as did how they would go on tour. Zoo Tv so different to just four guys on a stage from years gone by. A brake in touring the Achtung Baby album gave them some time to record new material with the idea of perhaps an EP would be released. The amount of material they had gathered put forth the thoughts that they might just get an album out from the short amount of studio time they had. And along came Zooropa which is what they would also call the European leg of the Zoo TV tour. Exploration with something different was still on the cards as it would be for the rest of the nineties with 1995's Passengers album (U2 with Brian Eno and some guests including Pavarotti) and 1997's Pop album. Numb was more a piece of fun than anything else, as can be seen with the video for the song, and for me it works well with the album. A video remix was also done for the tune which is what would be added for the live shows, Check out Numb from Zoo Tv in Sydney. Anyhow, still interesting seeing a reaction through new eyes.
Zooropa may not be their best album but it is the album that I play the most, and it is the best album for singing along and table drumming, that s for sure
Been a U2 fan since War, and there's not one album that can be called their sound. They experimented with so many sounds and influences that you'll be amazed at the diversity in their catalog. The band also did some solo projects, collaborations and one off's, like Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me. Night And Day is a cover that's worth checking out. North And South Of The River, Falling At Your Feet are a couple more tracks.
@@deepdivemusicreactions.. for Zooropa. The Edge is really a maestro with guitar effects. It's quite amazing what he does...more like a sound sculptor sometimes.
Zooropa was Kid A before Kid A was born 😃 if you find this experimental listen to the passengers album. It was Bono Edge Larry Adam and Brian Eno. Album is called original soundtracks 1, the group was called passengers, it wasn’t released under the u2 banner. Experimental Radiohead while Radiohead were playing creep
This is a song where you really need to watch the video to get the full effect. The Edge’s deadpan delivery with the chaos around him is what makes the song work for me. I still love it. ua-cam.com/video/N4jR1RNypG0/v-deo.htmlsi=euvQWV5UHmw__6MD
I get your vision of what is going on now but you have to try to put yourself in the shoes of someone in 1993. This is a huge shift in sound and in the environment of what was going on at the time this was another shift after Achtung Baby that started as an EP and became a full album. Think of it as Achtung Baby's younger weirder brother.
This song, numb, actually evolved from the demo song, Down all the Days. Which, personally i think is a better song, even though not fully polished. The vocals are more like gospel music over the crunching electronic music (basically the same music as numb). But, changed the song's direction to num b/c it fit better on the zooropa album.
They performed this song on some awards show, like Mtv Music Awards or The Grammys.....and I only remember thinking it was a great list of performers......now I have to go try to figure out who else was there! (The whole 4 hour show is on UA-cam!) It was Mtv Music Awards 1993.
It's a great album, a grower.

cool. I guess The Edge is the driver of that chemistry?

thanks. I never heard Kid A , and I don't know much about Radiohead. maybe that could be logic next step

To me, auchtung baby was an abstract novel of a lost man on a journey. Zooropa was the Sci-fi sequel.
true

Interesting point about bands falling away in the 90s, I’d add the Cure to that. I thought it was just me and my own musical tastes changing.
